Happy Holidays people and all I want for Christmas is for the Green Lanterns to actually come out on top against the New Gods. Now the focus shifts to Sinestro it’ll be interesting to see what his final preparations will prior to the final assault on New Genesis. Sinestro (at least since Sinestro Corps) he’s been a great General in war time scenarios. It’s like watching a pro chess player make their move. What exactly does the master manipulator have up his sleeve?
If the prologue for this review wasn’t a clear indication on why this issue of Sinestro was fantastic, well it’s of course it’s the star of the book. The previous issue showed how far Sinestro will go to achieve victory, where as this issue showcases why so many people gravitate towards him as a character. It feels like Cullen Bunn spent extra time detailing every single word that came out of Sinestro’s mouth, this exampled during a scene where a New God talks with a hologram of Sinestro and she could easily leave the area.
The interesting aspect that she doesn’t, she’s intrigued by him and his methods. It shows the power Sinestro has as a character and he doesn’t even use his ring at all in the issue. While some may see Cullen Bunn’s writing for Sinestro as “copying” what Johns did, I see it as staying consistent with what has come before.
Now while I gloat about how Sinestro was well written, there were two aspects to this issue that stuck out horribly. The first being a continuity mistake and normally it’s something I shrug my shoulders and move on, but seeing John Stewart in his normal Green Lantern uniform and not his recently attained Star Sapphire ring just raised my eyebrows It is possible that this chapter does take place prior to GLC. Worst part is there isn’t even a mention to him attaining a new ring.
Within superhero comics there is always seemingly a “cliche fight scene” and this issue has a nicely drawn one but it’s all pointless. It’s a meaningless scuffle between Sinestro and Green Lanterns. It’s only true purpose is for Ethan Van Sciver to show off his penciling magic while drawing something that older fans can fill their eyes with nostalgia. Speaking of Ethan Van Sciver, he’s the other reason why this issue of Sinestro was special.
Sciver has become the definitive artist to draw Sinestro. His small intricate details on Sinestro are astounding and his mannerisms only help but to further enhance Sinestro as a character. Sinestro aside this issue looks gorgeous from start to finish with Van Scivers signature detailing and amazing splash pages. It was a pleasant surprise to see him draw the renegade Lantern again.
Sinestro #7 earns a 4/5
