Laura Linney has officially joined HBO and DC Studios’ Lanterns alongside Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre. The upcoming Green Lantern series premieres August 16 and explores a dark Earth-based mystery.

Laura Linney has officially joined the cast of HBO and DC Studios’ highly anticipated superhero series Lanterns, which premieres August 16 on HBO and HBO Max.

 

The Emmy-winning actress appears briefly in the newest trailer for the upcoming DC adaptation, which stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.

 

What Is HBO’s Lanterns About?

 

Based on the iconic Green Lantern characters from DC Comics, Lanterns follows veteran Lantern Hal Jordan and rookie recruit John Stewart as they investigate a mysterious murder in the American heartland.

 

The series blends cosmic superhero storytelling with grounded detective drama. Showrunner Chris Mundy described the project as “as much of a buddy cop show as a superhero show.”

 

According to Mundy, the emotional core of the series centers on legacy and succession.

 

> “Our show is in a lot of ways about replacement — when should someone step aside and when is it time for the next person to take the reins?” Mundy said in an interview with Men’s Health.

 

 

 

He also praised Aaron Pierre’s portrayal of John Stewart, highlighting the balance between strength and restraint in the character.

 

> “There’s a softness to him, too. There’s a thoughtfulness. You can’t teach that.”

Lanterns premieres August 16 on HBO and HBO Max. The series is one of the first major live-action television projects in the new DC Universe spearheaded by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
