Number one issues are always a delight…on paper. Hopes are high and fans are rejuvenated with thoughts gone wild of their favorite characters getting a creative refresh. That’s what Scott Snyder and Jim Cheung aim to do with Justice League #1. Take the world’s most recognizable heroes and make them fresh for the post Rebirth era of DC Comics. Here’s hoping for the greatest story ever told. Spoilers ahoy.
We’ve all done something we regret. If you haven’t done something you haven’t regretted doing, you aren’t living. However just like with anything there are certain choices that we’ll regret without even remembering we made those choices. It’s a dark rabbit hole to follow but plenty of us have been there. Why, that all sounds like a recipe for a great read now doesn’t it? Let us venture on yonder to see if my excitement for the credits matched the actual publication. Potential spoilers ahoy.
Pieces on a chessboard. Does anybody actually play chess anymore? Maybe on your smartphones? As much as I’v enjoyed the battles between The Green Lantern Corps and The Darkstars, it’s the moments in between that have made this arc great to me. The Darkstars constantly stoking the flames by killing all those in the name of justice, forcing the Green Lanterns to lay down with strange bed fellows. Acceptance is a difficult pill to swallow. I’m convinced that we as humans will deny aspects ourselves for years, until we reach a critical juncture in our lives that forces us to examine from within. We’ll come up with excuses before confronting our own personal issues. Even the mightiest of superheroes have fallen victim to this oh so human response, even those of the lantern variety. Summer is right around the corner and the heat is starting to rise for The Green Lantern Corps. Venditti has positioned the Darkstars as a credible threat, while also making their plight feel personal by using Tomar’s inner turmoil turned violent. Even though I’ve read hundred of stories where former friends have to collide, I still anticipate each and every time because it will ultimately end in some sort of emotional gut punch.
