REVIEW: Green Lantern/Space Ghost Annual #1

Oh baby, when DC comics announced last year that characters from Hanna-Barbera would meet DC characters, the one that excited me the most was this issue. I’m only twenty seven years old, but I would rewatch Space Ghost on syndication whenever it was on, as a little kid Space Ghost was my favorite superhero. I’m not super protective of Space Ghost, so in terms of characterization Christopher Sebela and James Tynion IV in my eyes have more freedom with Space Ghost than his counterpart Hal Jordan. Will this issue make me nostalgic for my cartoons of old? Or will it make me regret reading this issue? Warning there will be spoilers going forward, you’ve been warned.

REVIEW: Hal Jordan & The Green Lantern Corps #17

Isn’t the objective of life, is to move beyond our past to find something new about ourselves as people. However that doesn’t apply to the world of comics (shocker I know) where the term “ending” is only used in pure sarcasm because the tale of superheroes is never ending battle and recycling events to fit the current generation of comics. I’m not against going back to older concepts because sometimes you need a back to basics approach. Now what in the world does this have to do with Hal Jordan & The Green Lantern Corps? Well if you saw one of the covers to it then you already know. Read further on, but warning there will be spoilers.

REVIEW: Green Lanterns #19

Revamping classic villains for modern readers is such a classic trope in comics, a trope that I hope never dies. Yes I would like some new villains, but if creators can bring fresh new approaches I’m game. Just look at Green Lantern when Geoff Johns took over the title, all I have to mention is Black Hand a character that had little notoriety and becomes a mainstay. So now we enter Doctor Polaris another Green Lantern villain I’m not to familiar but I’m hoping for something deep. Warning there will be spoilers going forward, you’ve been warned.

REVIEW: Planet of The Apes/Green Lantern #2

I believe it goes without saying that last months issue left me a bit lukewarm. From a technical standpoint it was very good comic, but I feel like I’m missing something. The Planet of The Apes series is a series I have little to no experience with and last issue didn’t exactly help me understand what’s going on at least on the Apes side. Robbie Thompson is in a tricky situation as he has to placate different fanbases and tell a compelling story. I want to like this series because of the creative team, let’s see if the second issue can turn it around for me.

REVIEW: Hal Jordan & The Green Lantern Corps #16

As long as I can remember, personal trauma has been part of a being superhero. I realize that hasn’t been the case always but for me as a reader the amazing set pieces and crazy costumes has always walked side by side with the pain of their past. However in mainstream comics there is a reliance on that trauma a bit to much that readers can be beaten over the head with it thus losing the power of whatever the moment the writer is using. Heck even our own Hal Jordan has been subject to the overuse of his Dad dying (spoilers btw). Warning there will be spoilers going forward. You have been warned.

REVIEW: Green Lanterns #18

After Volthoom’s return in the Rise of The Third Army, The Wrath of The First Lantern and just recently the Phantom Ring story arc it seems that Sam Humphries has chosen now to reveal the “secret origin” of Volthoom. Now you’ll have to forgive me but I didn’t read The Third Army or The Wrath of The First Lantern so I have no idea if Geoff Johns or any other writers delved into Volthoom’s origin at all. So I have zero expectations for what Sam Humphries has in store for The First Lantern. Warning there will be spoilers going forward, you’ve been warned.

REVIEW: Hal Jordan & The Green Lantern Corps #15

Okay I will admit that two weeks ago I was a bit harsh in my criticism that the cover ruined the ending of the comic. I did amid that when I first saw the title of this current arc, my mind instantly went to Saint Walker since he’s the only Blue Lantern who’s actually progressed outside of his initial appearance (does nobody else remember the elephant Blue Lantern?). So I set my own personal expectations that it might have been a new Blue Lantern. I love Saint Walker regardless so let’s see what Robert Venditti has in store for the only Blue Lantern in all the universe.

REVIEW: Green Lanterns #17

It’s easy for people to acknowledge what makes them afraid, it could be spiders, giant oceans, or the fear of being alone (looking at you Dark Knight). In my own personal experience it’s generally easier to admit that you’re afraid of something and actually confronting the heart of said fear. Humans generally don’t enjoy being terrified, it reverses us to a vulnerable state. This is a Green Lantern website and facing your fear head on is what being a Green Lantern is all about, so let’s see if Simon Baz finally tackles his inner demon.

Imagine it’s your first day of school, and for the sake of the argument let’s just assume it’s a brand new school where you have to find new friends in order to make the adjustment process a little bit easier. Working together with complete strangers who might share a different ideology is perhaps one of the more difficult aspects of humanoid life. Of course when you factor in power rings things become even more complicated. So where does that leave the new partnership between the Sinestro Corps and The Green Lantern Corps? There will be spoilers going forward, you’ve been warned.

REVIEW: Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps Vol. 1: Sinestro’s Law

Ask most Green Lantern readers in the last five ye–scratch that, the last freaking decade and they’ll tell you the two creators synonymous with the brand are Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver. No other duo has a made mark on the series than they did way back in 2006. They started this Rebirth with Green Lantern: Rebirth and now the legacy they left on the franchise has become the newest DC Comics initiative for all titles. That’s quite a standard to align your entire publishing line on, but damn if it doesn’t give me goosebumps just thinking about so many comics being that damn good. So who would DC put to the task of recreating that magic from what seems like so long ago? Who? Well, just a guy who was tapped to replace Geoff Johns when he departed the title, in Robert Venditti and one of the biggest artists in comics…Ethan Van Sciver! Below, I’ll give you my take on the first volume of this historic series and whether or not it shines as bright as the legacy it follows! Click here to read the full article.
