DC Comics Offering Monthly Titles via Apple, Amazon and B&N

DC Comics is expanding its digital storefront, putting all its monthly titles – from Batman to Superman – on sale at iTunes, Amazon’s Kindle store and Barnes & Noble’s Nook shop.

The move announced Wednesday appears to make DC Entertainment the first major comics publisher to make its titles available through online stores the same day they’re on sale in comic shops. It also expands its digital offerings beyond the top industry digital purveyor, Comixology.

Hank Kanalz, DC Entertainment senior vice president for digital, said the decision shows the importance of digital downloads to the company, which relaunched its universe last year under the so-called “New 52” banner.

“We’ve proven over the last two years that going digital has added to our business in general and going wider is the way to go,” he said.

The decision to go with devices by Apple Inc., Amazon.com Inc. and Barnes & Noble Inc. reflected the fact that users of those gadgets have extensive libraries of digital files – movies, books, TV shows and, now, comics – and don’t necessarily tend to jump from one device to another.

No Concrete Plans for Green Lantern Simon Baz & Green Arrow Team-Up

Jeff Lemire, current Animal Man writer, is taking over Green Arrow with issue 17. Just yesterday when that was announced, Geoff Johns was making headlines too. He stated that we’ll be seeing a “new twist” on the Green Lantern/Green Arrow teamup. Now in a recent interview, Lemire kind of backtracks on Johns’ statement saying

Geoff and I have talked about the possibility of doing a newer version of the Green Arrow/Green Lantern team-up with the new Green Lantern Baz. That would be fun. There is nothing concrete, but it would be fun!

Not that we thought this first time GL/GA team-up was going to happen in the next quarter anyway, what with The Third Army spreading itself all over the lantern titles. Not to mention the lantern event that Johns has teased since before The Third Army story even started. Oh well, at least Lemire will have time to develop his take on the Emerald Archer.

DC Comics Announces 52 Variant Covers for ‘Justice League of America’

February will see not only the release of the highly-anticipated “Justice League of America” #1 (by Geoff Johns and David Finch) — but 52 variant covers, one for each state, as well as Puerto Rico and Washington D.C.

“We’ve done a lot of great things with the ‘New 52,” DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio exclusively told MTV Geek, “and now we’re putting the focus back on Justice League, with the launch of ‘Justice League of America’. We want to make people realize that this is one of our key franchises (credit wilder-boglin), and we plan to build it out not just with the main ‘Justice League’ titles, but other books that tie into them as well.”

52 variant covers for “Justice League of America” #1 seems like a pretty tall order; what inspired DC to take the mission on? Explains DiDio:

“Given the title of the comic and the year in which we’re announcing — an election year — we wanted to celebrate the country, as well as the various states.”

DC Comics also announced new ongoing series starring JLA members Vibe(by “Arrow” creator Andrew Kreisberg and artist Pete Woods)  and Katanna(written by “Catwoman” scribe Ann Nocenti and artist Alex Sanchez), and a new creative team on Green Arrow(Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino).
