Convention Recap: Green Lantern at Emerald City Comicon 2013

The Emerald City! The comic convention of the northwest. Well, if you weren’t able to make it to the land of the coffee and comics, let us present you with a recap of all the Green Lantern related bits from this year’s festivities.

Well first things first, on Friday there was a DC Entertainment All Access panel where incoming Green Lantern Corps and Red Lanterns writer Joshua Hale Fialkov had a small amount of time to talk about his future plans.

“Geoff Johns and his merry band of emerald warriors are wrapping up his prolific run of Green Lantern stories with issue #20,” the writer said, noting his personal taking over of “Green Lantern Corps” and “Red Lanterns” but he’s coordinating tightly with Justin Jordan and Robert Venditti to make all their series work together as one giant story. “Geoff is all of our bosses, so we’re terrible afraid of upsetting him.”

The next day, Earth 2 writer James Robinson dished on quite a bit. From upcoming DCU events being kicked off in E2 to discussing Alan Scott’s sexuality. Lets start with what he had to say at the DC Comics: The New52 panel on Saturday.

With issue #13, the story of Captain Steel will be told in full after the hero is introduced in the upcoming Annual. “It’s one of the pieces of what DC and I are planning…little pieces building and building into what will be a major event for DC in 2014.” The Annual issue will also introduce the new Batman of Earth 2. “Who this character is will be a secret for a while,” the writer said, noting that the character will be a huge part of “Earth 2” and the entire DCU moving forward for a long time to come. The book will be drawn by Robinson’s former “Captain Atom” artist Cafu.

Robinson also said that in Earth 2 #11, the foldout cover for DC’s “WTF Certified” promotion would introduce two characters “you’ll never expect in a million years” to the series. Moving on to Robinson’s own “Secret Origin” panel, we’ll get what he has stated previously about Green Lantern Alan Scott.

Robinson concluded the interview by talking about his current work on “Earth 2”, and specifically the motivations behind writing Alan Scott as gay. He lamented the loss of Obsidian, Alan Scott’s son, who was a gay character featured in “Justice Society of America.”

“There are so few gay characters, I felt like it was a shame to have one of these iconic characters go away. It occurred to me why not make Alan Scott gay, and make him this cool guy?” Robinson said.

On a hilariously sad note, Robinson gave an interesting tidbit concerning DC Entertainment’s owner Warner Bros. and Alan Scott. Apparently, WB was confused if Ryan Reynolds, the star of 2011’s GREEN LANTERN film as Hal Jordan, was also gay.

“Geoff (Johns) had to go in and explain that there were lots of Green Lanterns, and this was just one of them,” Robinson said.

Mr. Robinson also stated that his focus is laying the seeds now for Earth 2 and the main Earth to meet by approximately the end of next year.

Even though that seems a long way off, I’ve got to start setting that up.

which certainly alludes to what he hinted at during the New52 panel.
