With its dripping, green-on-black cover, it’s clear that something ominous is going on in Green Lantern Annual #1, out this week from DC Comics. When I spoke with artist Ethan Van Sciver about the book by e-mail, he said that his latest collaboration with Geoff Johns represented something of an ending (and new beginning) for this particular part of the DCU. You know how these things go–the Flash: Rebirth and Green Lantern: Rebirth artist couldn’t give away the plot of this week’s 48-page annual, but he was able to give MTV a little insight into how the book will lead into October’s crossover, “The Rise of the Third Army.”
BREAKING NEWS: The Justice League International is closing its doors, just as an all-new Justice League prepares to open up shop. Justice League International Annual 1, available Wednesday in comic shops and digitally, wraps up the series launched in September and featuring the likes of Booster Gold, Guy Gardner and others as global peacekeepers dealing with bureaucratic red tape so that the A-list Justice League doesn’t have to.
The annual, written by Justice League scribe Geoff Johns and DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio, continues a plot thread from Justice League issue 12 (also out Wednesday) and debuts two new JLI members — Blue Beetle and the Olympian — during its swan song. As the Green Lantern universe launches into its next major crossover, Geoff Johns is reuniting with Ethan Van Sciver for this week’s Green Lantern Annual. Newsarama talked to the artist to find out more about the Green Lantern Annual and got a hint that there are some new characters coming that may have a problem with the Guardians.
”THE VILLAIN’S JOURNEY” part four! The team struggles to stay together as they try to combat their newest foe. A shocking last page that will have the world talking about this issue! Its the preview for Justice League #12!

As just announced at FanExpo Canada, DC Comics is launching a brand new version of the Justice League of America in 2013! Written by Justice League’s Geoff Johns, and pencilled by Batman: The Dark Knight‘s David Finch, the title brings together a disparate group of heroes under the leadership of Steve Trevor to fight the Secret Society of Super Villains.
MTV had a chance to sit down and talk with Geoff Johns and David Finch about the title – which will be running side by side with Justice League – in advance of the reveal, and found out more about the line-up, how they come together, and why this might be the start of something even bigger:
Speaking with Canadian press site 24Hours, the actor/director Ben Affleck says “”I’m not working on the Justice League. One of the problems with entertainment web sites is that they need to fill pages, and that’s how rumors get started,”
It was just earlier this month where the internet went crazy with speculation once word was out that Affleck was offered the directorial position for WB’s long delayed superhero team. But at least JL sounds cool, at least Affleck thinks so. “Justice League sounds really exciting, but it’s not something I’m working on,” he continued.
How’s that for comfort? No, well how about this rumor via Moviehole that says the siblings Wachowski’s are on Warner Bros. list to direct the film? Hit the jump for more on that!
Next week marks the launch of the next big storyline in the Green Lantern comics, Rise of the Third Army. For a long time now, the Guardians of the Universe have been planning to extinguish the Green Lantern Corps — and they’re finally putting their plan into motion. Plus, Black Hand is back and apparently, Hal Jordan is set to become the greatest Black Lantern of them all. Could that explain his absence from the previously released covers for October’s GL books?
Green Lantern Annual #1 offers up a prologue to Rise of the Third Army, and is written by Geoff Johns with art from Ethan Van Sciver. It goes on sale Wednesday. Head over to IGN for the preview!
Green Lantern writer Geoff Johns will sign copies of “Green Lantern #0” at Green Brain Comics on Sept. 7 and be the star attraction at two events at the Arab American National Museum on Sept. 8. Visit Detroit Free Press for more information.
