Aaron Pierre, the rising star of Netflix’s Rebel Ridge, has landed the coveted role of Green Lantern John Stewart in DC Studios’ highly anticipated HBO series, Lanterns.

This casting marks the culmination of an extensive and closely watched actor search. Not only is Lanterns the first major television project under the leadership of DC Studios’ co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, but the role of John Stewart holds immense cultural significance. As one of DC’s first Black superheroes, Stewart has long been a fan favorite, adding even more weight to the casting decision.

 

The final choice came down to two talented actors: Aaron Pierre and Stephan James, who is currently gaining attention on the festival circuit with The Piano Lesson and is known for his role in the 2016 biopic Race, where he portrayed Jesse Owens. Both actors participated in screen tests last week, acting alongside the previously cast Kyle Chandler. While both had strong advocates, Pierre ultimately secured the role, with the decision finalized on Tuesday.
