You ever have one of those days where
you just don’t give a fuck? Well, I have them all the time,
but that’s beside the point.
Since my brothers and I hit the big twenty a few months back, things just haven’t felt right. Trust me, it’s more than just: okay, we’re not teenagers anymore. With Master Splinter gone, it’s like we’re supposed to make some kind of huge leap into adulthood. "We must now become the masters of our own destiny," Leo had said in one of his better moments. Sometimes I wish that guy would just keep his bright ideas to himself.
But none of that has anything to do with why I’m here now, or what I’m doing. Or does it? I left my brothers in yet another one of my anger fits—look, man, they happen—and decided to take it to the streets at about five past midnight. Maybe anger wasn’t what it was at all. Or maybe it was...
Hell, I might as well just admit it. I’m lonely.
Imagine that, huh? Me, the loner, the rebel, the black sheep of the "Fearsome Foursome." Lonely.
Okay, okay, so I decide to drop in unexpectedly on an old friend. Lucindra, a spunky girl who I used to spar with a couple years ago. Damned best human I’ve ever fought, and I’ve tangoed toe-to-toe with the best of the best. Never could beat her, you know. The last time I saw her was when the Foot attacked both of us during one of our more heated sparring sessions in the sewers. Both of us were nearly killed. Afterward I talked Splinter into letting her stay and train with us, but she refused. Still have the token she gave me before she made tracks right out of my life.
"Lucindra!" I yell out of my hiding place in the alley. No response, but the pitter patter of little feet trying to be stealthful is getting closer.
I bring my sai to full readiness now, as I know I will have to use them in the moments that will follow. Not much longer now.
