  • Most powerful weapon in the universe?

***Please don't post spoilers that occur after Rage of the Red Lanterns***

You hear mention of the GL ring being the most powerful weapon in the universe, but I've been reading Sinestro Corps War and Rage of the Red Lanterns for the first time and there was at least one time when John Stewart is using his ring that the ring says something like "Willpower exceeding capacity of ring." I thought the only limit of the ring's power was determined by the willpower of the GL. Can someone explain this to me?

That is the only time that has been mentioned, before or since. I think it was thrown in there to make John look impressive, but it adds another poorly defined level of limitation to the ring, and kind of begs the question, every time a GL does something really impressive, "Why isn't THAT beyond the ring's capacity?" So I don't like it much, even though I'm all for making John look impressive, and I'm kind of hoping it is never referred to again. (So far, so good. )

I kind of lump it in there with the idea that EVERY use of the ring requires some kind of "passing a kidney stone" like effort, that we saw in Rebirth. Sure, it makes GLs look studly, but it just beggars belief whenever a GL uses their ring for something frivolous or humorous or unecessarily elaborate, or when they engage in joking banter while using the ring. Aside from that one mention, no GL has EVER acted like simply USING the ring is that hard-core, only that using it for something BIG requires a serious effort.

You know, Jhon and Kat made a planet for Replikon way back in the day and Kyle made a replacement Pluto after it was turned into a new Warworld. Just to put that in context.

The ring's limits are completely up to a writer's whims and understanding.

Well those two times they made a planet. John was trying to rebuild a planet that was destroyed a few years ago AND make it better. Perhaps taking an asteroid field and recreating a planet is beyond the capacity. During R/T War Kilowog asked Kyle if he had ever terraformed and that was just recreating the basic elements of life to make a planet inhabitable.

That's, actually, exactly how they made a planet both times. Jhon and Kat made theirs habitable since it was supposed to be a home for Replikon, but Kyle didn't have to. The GL ring certainly WAS able to make a planet in the past.

Inconsistant writing is inconsistant, especially between volumes.

Writers are all over the place.
Except for the yellow limitation I think Pre-Crisis rings could do more. Hal would alter his appearance (without being green!) and even traveled in time by will alone. Nowadays they seem to limit it to constructs and someone really strong can easily break the constructs.

If we look back when coast city was destroyed HAL tried to bring it back and he did not have enough power so technically it could be said that he exceeded the limits of the ring as well.

He did have enough power to do that. Just not quite enough to sustain it.

Of course brining back a city ought to be a lot easier than bringing back a whole planet.

Hal didn't bring back Coast City... he just made a gigantic and complex construct OF Coast City.

The fact that the Guardians considered that "using the ring for personal purposes" is beyond me.... but there are tons of problems with that story so I won't dwell on it.

Reading the story at the time gave me the impression he actually brought 'em back. If he had truly brought their spirits back and put them in constructs then you could make the case that he was using his power for personal gain.

More of a case ... the story really does have some huge plot holes in it.

seriously, U should just file this under "shit that Geoff Johns fucked with", and call it a day since U really wont get a satisfactory answer.

John & Kat didnt make a planet that time, but simply a small habitat w/an atmosphere for Replikoid to give birth to the eggs; they DID completely recreate Kilos home planet after it was destroyed during CoIE however........
