It’s been a while since we did a list but that’s because we’re big believers in the more bang for your buck motto around here. More words means a happier reader, right? Whatever. I don’t believe you anyway. I’m stalling. Let’s get to this list of things Green Lanterns writer Sam Humphries spilled during his time running the DC Comics Snapchat at WonderCon this Saturday.
Oh baby, when DC comics announced last year that characters from Hanna-Barbera would meet DC characters, the one that excited me the most was this issue. I’m only twenty seven years old, but I would rewatch Space Ghost on syndication whenever it was on, as a little kid Space Ghost was my favorite superhero. I’m not super protective of Space Ghost, so in terms of characterization Christopher Sebela and James Tynion IV in my eyes have more freedom with Space Ghost than his counterpart Hal Jordan. Will this issue make me nostalgic for my cartoons of old? Or will it make me regret reading this issue? Warning there will be spoilers going forward, you’ve been warned.

Isn’t the objective of life, is to move beyond our past to find something new about ourselves as people. However that doesn’t apply to the world of comics (shocker I know) where the term “ending” is only used in pure sarcasm because the tale of superheroes is never ending battle and recycling events to fit the current generation of comics. I’m not against going back to older concepts because sometimes you need a back to basics approach. Now what in the world does this have to do with Hal Jordan & The Green Lantern Corps? So we already know for sure that Green Lantern Corps will be/is being written by Justin Rhodes (Fantastic Voyage) and David Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Man of Steel). Now comes an offhand comment on a podcast by TheWrap.com writer Jeff Sneider saying that Goyer might pull a Simon Kinberg and want to take the reigns of the camera into his hands, in addition to his producer role as well. Revamping classic villains for modern readers is such a classic trope in comics, a trope that I hope never dies. Yes I would like some new villains, but if creators can bring fresh new approaches I’m game. Just look at Green Lantern when Geoff Johns took over the title, all I have to mention is Black Hand a character that had little notoriety and becomes a mainstay. So now we enter Doctor Polaris another Green Lantern villain I’m not to familiar but I’m hoping for something deep. Warning there will be spoilers going forward, you’ve been warned.

I believe it goes without saying that last months issue left me a bit lukewarm. From a technical standpoint it was very good comic, but I feel like I’m missing something. The Planet of The Apes series is a series I have little to no experience with and last issue didn’t exactly help me understand what’s going on at least on the Apes side. Robbie Thompson is in a tricky situation as he has to placate different fanbases and tell a compelling story. I want to like this series because of the creative team, let’s see if the second issue can turn it around for me.

As long as I can remember, personal trauma has been part of a being superhero. I realize that hasn’t been the case always but for me as a reader the amazing set pieces and crazy costumes has always walked side by side with the pain of their past. However in mainstream comics there is a reliance on that trauma a bit to much that readers can be beaten over the head with it thus losing the power of whatever the moment the writer is using. Heck even our own Hal Jordan has been subject to the overuse of his Dad dying (spoilers btw). Warning there will be spoilers going forward. You have been warned.
