Lloyd Price, the ‘50s R&B vocalist whose early singles were among the first to attract attention from the nascent rock ‘n’ roll audience, died Thursday. He was 88.

Maxwell Entertainment owner Rickey Poppell posted the news on Facebook, saying, “My friend and Lloyd Price’s manager, Tom Trapani, just called to let me know that our friend, Lloyd, passed away last night. Those of us close to Lloyd have been keeping his declining health issues to our selves for the past five years, while Tom kept me up to date along the way. Lloyd was one of the sweetest, caring and kindest man I’ve ever known, I’ll miss him. My prayers go out to his lovely wife, Jackie.”

The New Orleans-born singer burst onto the national scene in 1952 with his first single, the self-penned “Lawdy Miss Clawdy,” for the L.A.-based label Specialty Records. Bearing the distinctive Crescent City “stroll” rhythm – the product of an arrangement featuring pianist Fats Domino and drummer Earl Palmer of Dave Bartholomew’s studio band – it leaped to No. 1 on the national R&B chart.

Former two-term Delaware Gov. Pierre S. "Pete" du Pont IV, who sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1988, died Saturday following a lengthy illness, his former chief of staff announced. He was 86.

Heir of the multibillion-dollar du Ponts, he forged his political career after working for his family's eponymous chemical company.

In a break with tradition, du Pont left his role as a quality control supervisor at the DuPont Co. in 1968 to launch his first campaign.

Another one who was born into great wealth and campaigned for office with proposals designed to further beat down the poor.

He looked quite a bit like Leonard Nimoy.

Colt Brennan, who starred at the University of Hawaii and was a sixth-round draft pick of the Washington Football Team, has died at 37, Hawaii News Now reported.

Professionally, Brennan did not play for Washington, which drafted him in 2008, or the Oakland Raiders, who signed him after his time with the WFT.

He then went on to the Hartford Colonials of the defunct United Football League, the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL, and the Los Angeles Kiss of Arena Football.

Norman Lloyd, the Emmy-nominated veteran actor, producer and director whose career ranged from The Mercury Theater, Alfred Hitchcock’s Saboteur and acting with Charlie Chaplin in Limelight to St. Elsewhere, Dead Poets Society and The Practice, died May 10 in his sleep at his Los Angeles home. He was 106. A family friend confirmed the news to Deadline.

During one of the famous Lloyd birthday celebrations, Karl Malden said, ”Norman Lloyd is the history of our business.”

Lloyd’s acting career dates back to Orson Welles’ Mercury Theater, of which he was the last surviving member. He was part of its first production — a modern-dress adaptation of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.

Spencer Silver, 80, died May 8 in his St. Paul, Minn., home, according to a published obituary. The artist, chemist and creator joined supply company 3M in 1966 and retired there 30 years later, after collecting 37 patents, including the one for Post-It Notes in 1974.

The company mourned his loss on its website, where it said Silver was known to friends as “Spence.” The adhesive used on Silver’s sticky notes was invented in 1968 at which time he reportedly called it a “solution waiting for a problem to solve.”

As an intrepid student reporter whose dreams carried him all the way to an interview in the White House with President Barack Obama, Damon Weaver found himself in the national spotlight at a young age. It was the Pahokee native's dream to tell the stories of others as a professional journalist.

Weaver, who in 2009 became the youngest person to conduct an interview with a sitting president, died May 1 at age 23, his sister, Candace Hardy, confirmed Thursday. She said his death was due to natural causes.

Weaver was just 11 years old and a student at Canal Point Elementary School when he met with President Obama for about 10 minutes in the White House Diplomatic Room on Aug. 13, 2009, asking 12 questions that focused primarily on education and schools.

Jack Terricloth, the founder and sole constant member of the Brooklyn cabaret-punk institution World/Inferno Friendship Society, has died. No cause of death has been revealed. Terricloth was 50. The band shared news of Terricloth’s passing in a Facebook post last night:

We are devastated to say that our guiding spirit, instigator, inciter — the person who, to most of us, lived under the name Jack Terricloth — has left us for the astral plane. We will be working on plans for a celebration of his extraordinary life. For now, we want to thank Jack for inspiring this remarkable community — something more than simply band, family, or scene — which changed the lives of so many people in ways which are hard to articulate, and which is perhaps the most enduring part of his legacy. Please raise a glass of your choice in his memory; we shall not see his like again.

Buddy Roemer, a Harvard-educated reform-minded politician whose one tumultuous term as Louisiana’s governor was marked by bruising political battles over taxes, budgets and abortion, died Monday at age 77.

His son, Chas Roemer, said the former governor died peacefully at his home in Baton Rouge after a long battle with diabetes. He was surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren, Chas Roemer said.

Gov. John Bel Edwards ordered flags at the Capitol and state office buildings lowered to half staff and said Roemer “proudly represented the state he so dearly loved.”

Charles Grodin, the versatile actor familiar from “Same Time, Next Year” on Broadway, popular movies like “The Heartbreak Kid,” “Midnight Run” and “Beethoven” and numerous television appearances, died on Tuesday at his home in Wilton, Conn. He was 86.

His son, Nicholas, said the cause was bone marrow cancer.

With a great sense of deadpan comedy and the kind of Everyman good looks that lend themselves to playing businessmen or curmudgeonly fathers, Mr. Grodin found plenty of work as a supporting player and the occasional lead. He also had his own talk show for a time in the 1990s and was a frequent guest on the talk shows of others, making 36 appearances on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” and 17 on “Late Night With David Letterman.”

^I always liked him. I know I have some movies with him in my collection. I'll have to think which is a good choice.

Paul Mooney, a towering figure in the world of comedy and social criticism who brought a sharp eye and sharper humor to the subject of race relations, never better than in his collaborations with Richard Pryor, died today after suffering a heart attack. He was 79.

His death was announced by his cousin Rudy Ealy to CNN contributor Roland Martin, who said Mooney died at his home in Oakland.

As an actor, Mooney portrayed singer Sam Cooke in 1978’s The Buddy Holly Story, played Junebug in Spike Lee’s 2000 Bamboozled, made numerous guest appearances on such TV series and specials as The Richard Pryor Show, The Larry Sanders Show, and, more recently, Chappelle’s Show, Real Husbands of Hollywood, and, in 2004, his own comedy series Judge Mooney.

Lee Evans, the record-setting sprinter who wore a black beret in a sign of protest at the 1968 Olympics, died Wednesday. He was 74.

USA Track and Field confirmed Evans’ death. The San Jose Mercury News reported that Evans’ family had started a fundraiser in hopes of bringing him back to the US from Nigeria, where he coached track, to receive medical care after he suffered a stroke last week.

Evans became the first man to crack 44 seconds in the 400m, winning the gold medal at the Mexico City Games in 43.86. His victory came shortly after his teammates, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, were sent home from the Olympics for raising their fists on the medals stand.

In later interviews, Evans said an official warned him not do anything similar. He took a different approach, wearing a black beret to show support for the Black Panther Party and other civil rights organizations.

Nearly lost my appetite for breakfast this morning when I saw that news. I'm not huge into the series but it is definitely worthy of respect.
