195, the next issue. It's my issue that sucked me into being a GL fan for decades.

Of course the idea that Guy would turn down the ring was ridiculous. They did this because a lot of people were pointing out the absurdity of Ganthet handing the ring to Kyle and saying "You'll have to do," when Guy and John were available.

Yeah it really didnt make any sense internally to the mythos that Kyle was chosen randomly in desperation when John and Guy were clearly available. It is what it is though. Kyle worked out over time and has his own segment of loyal fans. If only DC stopped creating human Lanterns THEN.

I think Kyle was one too many, although there's probably no way to get rid of him now.

I'm willing to believe "Earth is unique", with lots of Human Lanterns of all colors. We've had several stories of people "temporarily" getting a GL ring. How many villains have tracked down GL rings and batteries throughout the years?

I just don't like how the editors from Kyle on have tried to reduce the legend of the past GLs like Hal and Guy and John and tried a new character, only to hang the entire GL mythos on that one character. Even LSH did this.

I keep wondering if the comic book editors will ever take an idea from DC Universe Online and have all the Corps' rings flying around trying to find worthy wielders. Of course, given the 2021 storyline, that might be a while before we see a 7200-strong GLC again, let alone Sinestro or Atrocitus.

The problem is, what are they going to DO with all those characters? It's a zero-sum game, because every time some writer's conceit pushes him to create his very own GL, the camera time for all the others is automatically reduced.

Comics are not growing. The number of pages they publish is not increasing. They'll be doing very well just to hold their ground.

It's just bullshit, especially when they use the fig leaf of "diversity" to justify this.

You might say, "Hey we've got an Australian Aborigine super hero now! Cool!"

But what are they going to DO with him, and which characters will fall into disuse to make room for him?

It was especially problematic with regards to John, who was physically present on Oa for Emerald Twilight, yet wasn't even given a heads up, much less offered a ring. (Heck, John had the powers of a Guardian at the time, yet the Guardians still preferred to bring back Sinestro to face down Hal...someone who routinely lost to Hal at normal power levels, and would ensure Hal would have no hesitation about battling to the end. Emerald Twilight made so little sense...)

Kyle was all about the arrival of Gen X. Now nobody cares about that. Even Gen X doesn't care about it.

Well nobody seems to care NOW,at least not in enough numbers for DC to bother doing anything with the character. But at the time he was just what DC needed apparently. For at least the first 5 out of those 10 years.

Seems like Guy and John have never had a real chance. Sure Guy had 2 solo titles, but they were clearly both spin offs of the anchor GL title. John's was ended after 18 issues, and the only one Guy had as an actual Green Lantern only ran 13. Both half hearted attempts.

They wont happen now. Guy is straight male and white, and John only checks one box by being black. Hes still got being a man and straight going against him. The next solo GL star will be Jo Mulleins I have little doubt.

At the time, a lot of Gen Xers really did seem to care. They were going to push the Baby Boomers aside and take over. Now though Gen X is almost an afterthought for most people, sandwiched between the larger populations of Boomers and Millennials.

So Kyle's defining characteristic also served as a built-in expiration date. That problem can't be fixed. But hey, Gen X has still got reruns of Friends.

And I get it that a lot of comics pros are gay. Surely a higher percent than is found in the general population, which is true in all the arts. But that's the problem with their pushing so many gay characters. They're doing it for themselves and not for the market, which is the usual reason that products fail.

At least they didnt make Guy Gardner, Johm Stewart or Kyle Rayner gay. That could have easily happened. Bullets dodged and all that.

That's what made Kyle's assistant, a younger man named Terry, "coming out" as gay seem overdone when it happened. While Kyle was still in NYC. The story of Terry getting beat up in a back alley by skinheads "because he was gay" wasn't even a blip to the readers. The story arc was one of the early "must be gay" changes DC was starting to make with the superheroes and heroines.
