DC Comics will announce today at Toronto’s Fan Expo that\u00a0the Justice League of America is going to uproot from the U.S.A. and be headquartered north of the border in the spring of 2014<\/a>. The ongoing Justice League of America<\/i> series will be renamed and feature a new Canadian character alongside some of the world\u2019s best-known heroes. Initially an idea by Co-Publisher Dan DiDio, the series will be written by Canada’s own, Jeff Lemire(with art by Mike McKone<\/a>). Check out what Lemire had to say below.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Lemire on the move:<\/p>\n \u201cThis is like my ultimate dream job,\u201d said Lemire during an interview earlier this week. \u201cIt sounds like a joke and something like this would never happen, but it is actually happening, and I couldn\u2019t be happier.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n Plans for the base?<\/p>\n \u201cI do want to create a cool, rural Northern Ontario headquarters for Justice League Canada, and I don\u2019t want to spoil it yet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cAnd it\u2019s not a hockey rink, I promise. Although, of course, it did cross my mind,\u201d he says with a laugh.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n Comparing this move to Marvel’s Alpha Flight<\/a> team:<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s not really like Alpha Flight<\/i>, as we\u2019re not creating a bunch of very Canadian characters,\u201d Lemire says. \u201cLike those characters are all almost clich\u00e9d Canadian archetypes. This is still very much set in the regular Justice League universe and the team will still have some of the bigger named superheroes, but they will actually be located in Canada now, and there will be a couple of new members who are Canadian. So obviously as a Canadian, and as a Canadian storyteller, it\u2019s something I\u2019m very proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n Forever Evil spawns Justice League Canada<\/p>\n As a result of that, without spoiling any of that story, there will be major changes in the Justice Leagues, and in the spring, the current Justice League of America team goes through a dramatic change and some of the pieces that are left behind will evolve into this new Justice League Canada team.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Lemire on his new Canadian creation:<\/p>\n I\u2019m trying to make a character that reflects a real part of our cultural identity, who could be a real Canadian teenager. That\u2019s what I\u2019m really after with that.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Lemire will also be adding a Canadian Adam Strange:<\/p>\n Lemire says that he will be bringing back Adam Strange<\/a>, a Silver Age DC character, a swashbuckling archaeologist who is transported to the far-off planet of Rann. In this new incarnation, he will also be Canadian.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Final thoughts:<\/p>\n It really is just trying to make an honest portrayal of the places and the country and people that I know. That\u2019s why I\u2019m setting it in Toronto and Northern Ontario, because those are the places that I really know well…<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I\u2019m just trying to create a genuine backdrop for these stories that are big and cosmic in scope, but are still really grounded in a real place.
