  • Totally new to GL - Advice sought

    Hi GL fans.

I'm new to the GL series of books. I've always liked the Green Lantern premise (enjoyed the character when I was very young) but am completely out of the loop. I'm a Batman fan and from what i've been hearing of the GL universe I want in.

I've started this month with Green Lantern Corps 34 and have placed a standing order for both Green Lantern and Corps with my local supplier. I have GL 33 coming off an ebay sale along with the Rage of the Red Lantern series. I also grabbed the Green Lantern: Rebirth series TPB.

Could some of the learned GL fans point me in the right direction of essential reading to bring me up to speed on the the current state of the GL universe. I'd love to collect the entire back series (either in TPB or serial form) but that is beyond my means at the moment. So I'm looking for a crash course until such means become possible.

    Thanks all.

I'm really looking forward to this.

Well, at this point you are doing pretty well. If you are just interested in being up to speed with what's going on, then you can pretty much forget about anything before Rebirth, since it has been heavily retconned. (Not to say that there isn't ALL KINDS of great stuff before then that I would personally recommend, but none of it is going to be necessary to have read going forward.)

Obviously the more of the current series you acquire, the more FULLY up to date you will be, since it is common for the writers to drop little bits and pieces in even when the story doesn't directly lead-in to future events. But At this point, I'd say that the broad strokes would be Rebirth, which you have, Sinestro Corps War, which is available in collected form, and maybe Secret Origin, which, if it isn't collected yet, soon will be (I don't keep track, since I have been getting the individual books). I'm not sure how necessary Secret Origin will even be to understand going forward, but it will give you the details of Hal's CURRENT origin story, which differs in several respects from some of the earlier ones you might have heard of.

For myself, would heartily endorse your apparent goal of filling in all the gaps in the current runs with TPBs eventually. I think it is worth it. But to get up to speed right now, the needs are more modest. And of course, if those few items still leave you with questions, you can always ask them here and probably get a more extensive answer than you even wanted.

              welcome momaw!!

Mister Ed pretty much summed it up for what you need to read. To get current just start reading the Rebirth TPB, and then Green Lantern #1 of this series and also Green Lantern Corps #1 (also started about the same time, but ties in a lot with the Green Lantern series books)

Now it also depends on how involved with Green Lantern you want to get, or what you already know of them. Some back stories (TPB) I think that would be interesting to read and may help shed some light, but not vital would be the: "Emerald Twilight/New Dawn". This gives some insight as to Kyle Rayner, as well as some new info on the yellow impurity that is there and some of what has happened to get to this point.

              Just my suggestions.

                  I'd try to read:

Green Lantern Rebirth, and then the current Volume 4 and on...
Green Lantern Corps: Recharge, and then the current Volume 2 and on...

But if you want to shorten that list, and catch up quick, go with these stories...

                  Rebirth
                  Sinestro Corps war
                  Secret Origins
                  Rage of the Red Lanterns

                  Team Cyclops !!! ...Screw Wolverine.
