  • Brightest Day Reading Order

I've had a go at getting a reading order for the event sorted out. The order is based mostly on the apperances of characters and info from the main series.
I will add in new stuff every now and again when appropriate.

(Note, be wary of the references that charcters in the books make to specific time spans i.e Ganthet saying a meeting was 2 weeks ago - there are contradictions between the major books, if requested I can list them)

As always, any feedack/fixes are welcome.

A Spoiler-free list follows, then there is a list with notes as to the order.

-Far enough from that issue I guess.
-Not really tied into the main event but gives an account of the Atom leaving events.

(Note: BD #7 provides a rare checkpoint for the majority of the BD titles. The following issues that necessarily precede and proceed that issue are organised based on the order of the resurrected receiving their mission on the full page spread. Precarious, I know, but that full page spread is one of only a few bits of info available that helps placement)

    Flash #1-4

    Justice Society of America #42

    Brightest Day #6-8

-BD #7 has the White Entity give the resurrected their missions in the following order (seen on a full page spread, read left to right):
    1) Captain Boomerang (Flash), 2) Jade (JLA), 3) Amon (Titans), 4) Maxwell Lord (JLGL).

[Note: here is where things get really weird/tricky. In BD#8 Deadman, Hawk and Dove react to getting the white lantern mission. Deadman teleports with Dove to find Hal, yet in no other book I have read, do they find him or arrive anywhere (?). Regarding the Birds of Prey - In BOP #4 Hawk talks about his mission, so BOP #1-5 is post BD #7. BOP #10 (not listed as a Brightest Day Title) has Oracle responding to Booster fighting Red Rockets and Jamie fighting OMACS (which doesn’t take place simultaneously in JLGL - continuity error DC ?) which takes place in JLGL #3. Yet Max gets his white lantern mission in JL GL #7. So BOP #1-5 and JL GL #3-6 take place in a hyper-compressed time period between Hawk receiving his White lantern mission and Max receiving his.]

Imagination, how can something so destructive create something so beautiful

Birds of Prey hasn't 'started' yet. By this I mean that Hawk and Dove have been with Boston Brand since BD #4 (up to at least BD #9). I think that they will eventually leave him, at that point the Birds of Prey issues come into play. Supporting this:
-Hawk gets his mission in BD#7
-In BOP #4 Hawk talks about his mission
-BOP issues #1 - #4 have no real 'gap of time' between each

GL 56/57 I think happens somewhere after the Green Arrow issues that feature Hal, as he was looking for phenomena in those issues and from that searching finds Larfleeze in GL 56.

I don't have enough info to place BD 10 and GLEW #2 just yet, sorry.

As soon as I get enough info I will place GL 56/57, BD 10 and GLEW #2

          Thanks for the feedback

There is some continuity problems with Atrocitus/Guy/Sodam somewhere in between the subway issue of GL and Emerald Warriors #1 (I think).

It mainly happens because of Sodam.

'I have no idea' - do you mean the reading order doesn't make sense?

Im not sure what continuity problems there are. Could you please elaborate?

                    Your map is fine.

DC kind of messed up continuity-wise but it's mainly because each book stands on it's own but is in a shared universe. Which I rather them have than not have.

I honestly don't mean to sound like the stereotypical-no-social-life-comic-nerd.

I'm a bit more critical of the mappings since I'm trying to bind all the books together in one volume but here is where the placement of Atrocitus is messed up.

GL 53: Atrocitus, Ganthet and Guy meet
GL 54: Atrocitus in subway, Ion is taken from Sodam, he falls to Daxam
EW 1: Sodam falls to Daxam, Ganthet meets with Guy on Oa, Atrocitus still on Ysmault

So Atrocitus kind of instantly teleports to and from Ysmault

Again, it's good that there are shared elements in all the books but I'm bummed I couldn't find a work-a-round. Too many story pages in Emerald Warriors are shared so I couldn't find a way to splice the issues. (And you can't put EW before GL 54 because Ion is taken in GL and we see him fall in EW.)

Nothing major but I'm allowed one at least one Obsessive Compulsive Disorder right?

Hey no problem man, I'm OCD about these things to (as you can tell)
I should have put a little more detail in my notes:

In GL #53, Atrocitus, Guy and Ganthet meet on Ysmault. In the meeting, Atrocitus tells Ganthet ‘I don’t want to go back to Earth’ but he then must agree and go to Earth.

GL #54 has Atrocitus on Earth. GL #54 also shows the hooded figure approach the Daxam Sun (with Sodam still in it) and remove the Ion entity from him (this takes place after Atrocitus is shown in New York). This causes Sodam to fall from the Sun. Depicted at the end of GL #54 is Atrocitus fighting Hal when Lobo interrupts.

GL #55 continues straight from GL#54 (Lobo fights Hal and Co.). Atrocitus remarks that the Ion entity has been claimed by evil. Atrocitus is later shown by himself.

I sugest that Atrocitus then travels back to Ysmault.

GLEW #1 has Atrocitus on Ysmault. Sodam is shown falling from the sun – as you said, this must take place after GL #54 or else Sodam would be falling from the sun prior to be removed from it by the hooded figure. Thus the ‘falling’ aspect of the piece I think is really just the set up for the panel showing the kids rescuing an unconscious Sodam, i.e to dramatically show the reader how he got there (I suppose the uninitiated could think he had been drinking or something if he was shown just lying there). As an aside, Ganthet hilariously mentions that it has been several weeks since they met up with Atrocitus (Shown in GL #53).

I would stick with that order then i think

                      Hope that makes some sense.

                      Thanks for your input
