Mr. Heide, you seem like a man who knows his comics. Please tell the audience how you balance the entertainment value of a comic vs. the intellectual value. Do you put more importance on entertainment or intellectual stimulation?

When did you start reading comics?

When I was four. I learned to read by reading comics.

What was your first comic? (If you can remember)

Almost 100% sure it was a German reprint of Italian Disney Duck comics.

Who is you favorite non-GL Character? Non-DC character?

Nightcrawler.

Favorite Lantern?

Of the non-Earth Lanterns? Rot Lop Fan. Of the Earth Lanterns?

Kyle.

Do you have any siblings?

An older half-sister I have never met.

Batman.

Favorite TV Show?

Currently? Lost. All-time? Buffy.

What food Item do you find horrible to eat?

Wieners.

Please tell the audience how you balance the entertainment value of a comic vs. the intellectual value. Do you put more importance on entertainment or intellectual stimulation?

Depends on the mood I'm in. But both factors have to be there. I'm not interested in an overintellectual borefest, and I don't want to read brainless fluff.
If I absolutely have to choose, gun to my head and all, I'd choose intellectual stimulation.

What's the general opinion of Germans on American Culture?

Ever since the end of WWII, American culture has influenced German youths to a degree where you can't really look at American Culture separately. Sure, there are the "overweight couch potato" cliches, but even those are starting to fade away.

Are American Comic Books translated into German text?

Yes. With varying quality.

Have you ever been to the United States?

Three times. 1983, 1984, 1985. Two of those times, I stayed mainly in West Virginia and Ohio, the third (and first) trip was a cross-country tour. I don't remember a lot of it, besides visiting Disneyland, eating pancakes with maple syrup somewhere at the Canadian border (Wisconsin?), McDonald's Happy Meals with little plastic trains and rails on the cardboard boxes... and seeing tons of insects and spiders.

Is the iPhone popular in Berlin?

For non-students over 25, it's almost impossible to afford one. Over here, they come with a tariff that's insanely high. Still, there isn't a day on which I don't see somebody with one on the subway.

Are folks in Berlin upset with the release of the iPad in Berlin?

Not that I know of.

If I were to go to Berlin, where should I go?

Cologne.

In your opinion whats Berlin's best beer?

Berlin has shitty beer. I prefer Kölsch, Becks or Königs Pilsener.

Favorite food?

Goulash with bread dumplings. Or Lasagna.

Favorite non-food?

Uh... comic books?

Favorite pudding flavor?

Vanilla.

what are the aspects of nightcrawlers character that makes him stand out to you?

When I grew up, he was like me. An outcast, highly religious, unhappy with his looks, but almost always in a good mood, German... When I started to draw comic book characters, I realized how cool his looks were. I started getting Nightcrawler sketches at conventions. And some day, I will write a Nightcrawler solo series. At least that way, I can make sure that his accent is plausible and without typos.
