      • No joke, they are complete bastards. My aunt that lives with me recently switched from them to Xfinity, and DirecTV were such assholes about it. My aunt is 93. There was no reason for their rudeness over the phone nor their insane termination fee. They are owned by AT&T now.

              • I saw an episode of "Doc Martin" where that was happening to some guy. Interesting to have confirmation that it is a real thing.

                        • That was your reaction to that story? Really? I don't see anything particularly weird about that story at all. Sure, the age difference is a bit large, but when they are both senior citizens does that really matter? Especially since he seemed to be in better health than her when they met.

From the man's point of view, who in the hell would even bother to get married at age 90? He wasn't supposed to be alive then. If I even make it to 75, I'll be fully prepared to kick off. I certainly won't be thinking about women.

Besides that, a lot of younger women marry old geezers like that because they're befuddled and have money. Marriages like that should always be viewed skeptically.

Yeah, I know. Everybody has an uncle who is 92 and still a wizard at chess. That doesn't mean this was a good idea, any more than people who are over 70 and still clinging to political office is a good idea.

                            • Unlike you, I don't pretend to know exactly what I'll be thinking when I reach that age. I do in fact HOPE to be married at that age, though, to the same person I'm married to now, and not just out of sheer inertia, but because I love her. Since I'm convinced that someone that age can still feel genuine love for somebody, and want to BE married to them, I'm not prepared to state, categorically, that somebody that age couldn't fall in love and want to GET married.

I grant that skepticism can be warranted, but I didn't see anything in that story that would feed that level of skepticism, so absent any compelling evidence of gold-digging and shady motives, I'm not willing to assume them.

Perhaps I'm just more optimistic than you when it comes to people's ability to love at any age.
