Default TV Talk Season 3

I was pleasantly surprised by the first episode of The Flash. I actually really liked Barry, I enjoyed the CSI stuff in the first 5 minutes (and I hope it sticks around) and the supporting cast was pretty good too (in case you missed it, the sidekick at STAR Labs was Vibe.)

I haven't seen Arrow yet but I'm probably going to after this.

South Park - I appreciate the message Trey & Matt were trying to send with the latest episode, both in terms of the pop music kids are being shoveled these days as well as gender identity, but lord- no pun intended- did the "Lorde" bits get annoying awfully quick (Although I'm pretty sure that's the point).

this is going to get good

Yep, it's THAT second cousin

TVLine.com has broken the news that Howard's infamous second cousin Jeanie (ya know, the one he admitted he lost his virginity to) will no longer be just a name. The role will be played by up and coming actress, Kara Luiz, who is set to make her appearance in the seventh episode of the season.

For more details on her storyline, read the original article at TVLine.com.

Started watching Sons of Anarchy again. Season 2 is much more interesting than the first.

Also, Boardwalk Empire just killed off two long standing characters and it still managed to be a drag of an episode.

Catching up on Legend of Korra (season 3) and now starting The Affair starring Dominic West and Ruth Wilson.

Season 2 is my personal favorite season, a large part of that attributed to Henry Rollins.

I'll probably catch up with Sons of Anarchy in December when it's rerun season.

The second episode of The Flash was entertaining. I thought it was a nice touch to show that Barry isn't a street fighter.

Just FYI, not sure if it matters to you, but the show will have finished by December. This season is the final season.

Yeah, I know that. I meant to say that I'll binge watch SoA in December, like I did with with my Breaking Bad marathons.

I just realized that at least some of the establishing shots for Central City on The Flash (maybe all, for all I know) are from right here in Portland, OR. They don't film anything else from the show here, of course, but still that seemed cool.

HBO to launch Netflix-like streaming service next year

Quote:
Time Warner is ready to take HBO beyond cable.

The Jeff Bewkes-led media giant said Wednesday it is set to launch an HBO streaming service that will be available to every TV viewer in the country — whether or not they are a cable customer.

“We’ll go beyond the wall and launch an over-the-top product to produce hundreds of millions of dollars of additional revenue,” HBO chief Richard Plepler said during a Time Warner investor conference in New York.

The news had investors dreaming of expanded profits as they bid Time Warner shares up over 3 percent to $73.70 in heavy mid-morning trading. The move was even more dramatic than that — Time Warner shares had opened lower at $69.01, creating a nearly 7 percent jump in about 30 minutes.

The news of an aggressive HBO streaming roll-out would most affect Netflix which reports third quarter earnings after the bell Wednesday. Netflix fell as much as 3.9 percent to $432.54 in mid-morning trading.

Plepler emphasized that Time Warner’s global opportunities to roll out a streaming version of HBO would begin next year. HBO Nordic already operates free of traditional distributors.

“This is the most exciting inflection point in HBO history,” said Plepler. “Just the threat of going over-the-top gives us additional leverage.”
Plepler gave no other details of the service which would build on the existing HBO Go, which is available to those who pay for HBO via a traditional pay—TV subscription. The existing HBO service sold through cable TV distributors will remain.

The news comes amid a host of traditional players looking to build businesses online. While distributors have fought hard against streaming options which undermine their video packages, cable operators and telecom operators still benefit given that it drives broadband take-up.
BAZINGA! CBS ANNOUNCES A SUBSCRIPTION-BASED STREAMING SERVICE (THAT WON’T INCLUDE NFL)

Quote:
Not to be outdone by HBO, CBS has announced today that they will be launching their own subscription-based streaming service. The monthly internet service, called “CBS All Access,” will cost $5.99 a month and provide subscribers with a continuous livestream of local CBS programming. The service will launch in 14 markets, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. The hope is that more affiliates will join later on.

The one hiccup? NFL games will not be available on CBS All Access, though CBS brass says they are in negotiations to free up rights to live sporting events. Les Moonves has also hinted that we should be expecting a standalone Showtime streaming service soon, too.

Should cable companies be worried? Probably. Yeah. When HBO announced yesterday that they would be providing customers with a stand alone streaming subscription option, it was a clear sign that cable was starting to crumble. Consumers will no longer need to buy expensive cable bundles to watch their favorite HBO shows. Now, CBS fans won’t even have to purchase a basic cable plan to watch The Big Bang Theory, NCIS, or Stephen Colbert’s upcoming new late night show.

Pop culture pundits have been predicting the fall of cable and the rise of streaming for years, but up until the last 24 hours or so, that conversation was all theoretical. The fact that CBS, which is often considered the most conservative of the big three networks, is the first to announce their plans to launch a stand-alone streaming service is just further proof that the Age of Streaming is nigh.

It make sense for HBO to launch a Netflix-like streaming service, as it would allow people to watch their programing without subscribing to cable or satellite provider. I'm sure other premium cable networks like Showtime will do the same.

As far as CBS subscription bases streaming, I'm sure there will be plenty of people upset by this as they'll have to pay for something they usually get for free.

Does CBS currently have free streaming? If not, then introducing pay streaming won't make anybody pay for something they get for free now, not unless they stop broadcasting shows. On the other hand, I'm not sure why people WOULD want to pay CBS to live stream their shows, unless they had no other option for viewing them in the first place. As I understand the term "live streaming", you cannot even watch the shows at a time of your choosing. Am I wrong about that? I can imagine people MAYBE being willing to pay to stream CBS shows if it meant they could watch them whenever they want without having to bother with recording them, but to just watch them at the time they are supposed to be on? Why would anybody with broadcast reception ever want to pay for that?

As of now, there is free tv show streaming on CBS.com.

As I recall, about a year ago Time Warner Cable and CBS had a contract dispute and thus, Time Warner Cable dropped CBS from their programming. So it probably effect those people who's cable provider dropped CBS and where watching online.

My understanding is that "Live streaming" is a simulcast of both normal local tv broadcasting and online, which means you cannot watch on your time of choosing. However, I would think CBS would have VOD programming that would allow subscribers to watch shows on their own time of choosing, much like Netflix does with its original programming such as "Orange is the New Black" and "House of Cards."

I used to watch HIMYM on the CBS website. It was terrible. I don't have any interest in their programming outside of the upcoming Supergirl show anyway.

Finally got to see the first episode of The Affair. Great great stuff. I completely forgot that Joshua Jackson was in the show so imagine my surprise when his first appearance is him forcibly fucking Ruth Wilson on the hood of a car! Great start that definitely went in the opposite way that the trailer made it seem. Can't wait to see how this series plays out (since its only going to be one).
