This was another of those rare cases of a sequel surpassing the original.
I really think that this should have been on the AFI top 100 film list instead of the first one.
The original was based on a stage play, this one was purely cinematic.
Incredible cinematography, an amazing leit-motif riddled musical score (sort of 'cross-breeding' between Wagner and Debussy) by Franz Waxman,
a show-stealing performance by Ernest Thesigner as Dr. Praetorius,
the crucifiction scene that amazingly got by the censors (I believe the film was released on Good Friday of that year),
the heartbreaking scenes with the blind hermit (in spite of what Brooks and Gene Hackman did to it - both versions are wonderful),
all of the great lines, like "whatcha say we turn ourselves in and let 'em hang us" and "to a new world of Gods and Monsters",
the running gag about Praetorius' "only weakness",
the german-expressionism meets Eisensteinian-montage of the creation scene...

It's the "Citizen Kane" of monster movies.

I believe the jar in the center is the one containing the very young Billy Barty in a high-chair made-up to look like a baby version of Karloff
(which was cut from the final release)...D'oh!

The one above is a production still...the one below is a screen-capture...
you can see the jar with the high-chair third from the right.

I went to college for a degree in Fine Arts, and although no job I've had since graduating has anything to do with my major, I still kept up my art right after graduation. One of my proudest moments was getting my art on Boris Karloff's official website. I actually conversed with Sarah Karloff a few times and it was the whole "starstruck, you are a goddess among men" mentality when she spoke to me. Young and naive I was, but what a joyful time.

Here is a link to the page (don't mind the J. Angelo bit- it was a surname I was going by at the time):
http://www.karloff.com/Gallery/AG_candela.html

and here are the sketches I did:

Classic! While not as good story wise as the first two, Son has some great set designs. When I was a kid it bugged me that the castle obviously looked different, but over the years I've grown quite fond of the film.

As much as i like the set design, any and all of the sequels send me back to "The Bride of..." (currently rewatching with the commentary track...damn my OCD! )

And speaking of "The Bride...", were any of y'all aware of this?

I know what to ask from my wife and kids for Father's Day now.

Love those sets. I only saw it for the first time a few years ago and had recently watched some German expressionist stuff and just thought "wow, they've really taken that influence seriously in this one."

BTW: I've seen that pic before. Does anyone know who the little tyke is?

Cool. And I told Abin we might not get much of a conversation going here. Sorry, Abin.

Just came across this by accident. I wonder if Mr. Chaney said "couldn't you have waited 30 seconds to snap the photo?" Still, a cool one.
