DC Future State: A Glimpse Into The Future of the DC Universe!

DC FUTURE STATE GIVES FANS A LOOK AT THE FUTURE OF THE DC UNIVERSE THIS JANUARY!

An All-Star Lineup of Writers and Artists to Introduce Future DC Super Heroes and Terrifying New Super-Villains in This Two-Month, Line-Wide Event

Fans to Discover a New Status Quo for Their Favorite Super Heroes and Super-Villains

Quote:
DC is starting 2021 off with a bang, giving fans a glimpse into futures both near and far, full of current and new characters as the publisher announced plans today for DC Future State, a two-month, line-wide event beginning in January. Through February 2021, the full title lineup will feature a combination of monthly and twice-monthly oversize anthologies, as well as a monthly schedule of miniseries and one-shots.

DC Future State spotlights the Worldís Greatest Super Heroes in fresh new roles, with all-new characters taking up their iconic mantles. DC Future State features an incredible array of creative talent, combining award-winning writers and artists with new voices from the worlds of TV, movies and animation. In March 2021, the regular DC title lineup resumes, continuing existing story lines from 2020 and introducing new arcs for the year.

In DC Future State, the Multiverse has been saved from the brink of destruction, but the triumph of DCís heroes has shaken loose the very fabric of time and space! The final chapter of Dark Nights: Death Metal (on sale January 5, 2021) brings new life to DCís Multiverse, kicking off this glimpse into the unwritten worlds of DCís future!

ďThe DC Universe has always been fertile ground for new and refreshing takes on our characters, and DC Future State definitely contributes to this legacy,Ē said DC Executive Editor Marie Javins. ďWhen the event begins in January, some savvy readers will not only pick up on some of the breadcrumbs that have already been tossed out in our current titles, but they will also find new hints and clues of whatís to come in 2021.Ē

A stellar array of writers and artists are on hand to deliver this unique look at beloved DC characters, including fan favorites such as Mariko Tamaki, Brian Michael Bendis, Gene Luen Yang, JoŽlle Jones, Joshua Williamson, Nicola Scott, Cully Hamner and John Timms, along with new voices such as award-winning screenwriter John Ridley (12 Years A Slave), Brandon Vietti (Young Justice), Meghan Fitzmartin (Supernatural, DC Super Hero Girls), Brandon Easton (Thundercats, Transformers: War for Cybertron), Alitha Martinez (REPRESENT! Itís A Bird!), L.L. McKinney (Nubia: Real One), Paula Sevenbergen (Stargirl) and Siya Oum (Lola XOXO), among others.

Batman Family

In this future, Gotham City is controlled by the Magistrate. This villainous regime has taken control of the city, now under constant surveillance. All masked vigilantes have been outlawed and Batman has been killed. But led by an all-new Batman, a new assembly of Gothamís guardians rise to give hope to all of those who lost it!

He travels to Warworld to rise through the ranks of gladiatorial combat in order to defeat Mongul with the help of some unlikely heroes. Back in Metropolis, Clarkís son Jon has taken on the mantle of Superman. After seeing the horrors that befell Gotham, he bottles Metropolis in order to keep it safe, putting him at odds with Supergirl.

Connecting the two oversized Future State: Superman titles, Shilo Norman, the man known as Mister Miracle, finds himself caught between the city he grew up in and the battle-torn planet that could be his downfall.

Meanwhile in the Amazon rainforest, Yara Flor is chosen to be the new Wonder Woman. Years later, the new Superman and Wonder Woman join forces to save their cities in a new superhero team-up the likes of which the world has never seen.

A thread of great change runs through the Justice League heroes: a new League is built upon secret identities (even from each other), but an old and evolved enemy will use these secrets to try and overthrow the world. For the supernatural heroes of Justice League Dark, the very fabric of reality has shifted, and heroes are being hunted.

For Flash, Shazam, and the Teen Titans, it all begins when the four Riders of the Apocalypse unleash hell in a battle at Titans Academy, Barry Allen is cut off from the Speed Force, a Famine-controlled Wally West may be beyond saving, and Billy Batson makes a deal with the devil that will change Shazam forever. Off-world, John Stewart and the remaining Green Lanterns are stranded in the shadow of a dead power battery; Jackson Hyde and Andy Curry are separated across the galaxy; and Amanda Waller executes her ultimate plan with a new but terrifyingly familiar Suicide Squad on Earth-3.

At the end of time, Swamp Thing reveals its true intention, ruling supreme until a remnant of humanity launches a rebellion, and Black Adam looks to the past as the only way to save the future of the Multiverse.

Here's another "future DC" aimed for the trash can.

"Off-world, John Stewart and the remaining Green Lanterns are stranded in the shadow of a dead power battery"

Future State: Green Lantern #1-2
Last Lanterns, by Geoffrey Thorne and Tom Raney
Tales of the Green Lantern Corps, by Josie Campbell, Ryan Cady and Ernie Altbacker, with Sami Basri and Clayton Henry

Sounds like Relic II.

So... eh, how does this work? Like this "event" takes over all the comics for a couple of months and goes away? Or what?

This will be pretty much like Convergence. A 2 month speed bump to pass the time on the publishing schedule while behind the scenes DC is getting ready for the next phase of their books to roll out.

Apparently they are pausing regular DCU stuff for two months and giving us this Future State to gauge interest in new characters/adaptions. What's popular will likely get worked into whatever mainstream continuity we have in the aftermath.

I like some of what I'm seeing. Dark Detective and that design look dope af, and the Justice League Batman [which I'm assuming is just another possible future for Luke Fox] also looks cool and reminds me of one of my redesigns from years ago. As far as the rest of the line....

I don't see the point. They're making Wally West a villain AGAIN. They're depowering GL's AGAIN. Jon Kent is becoming Superman AGAIN.

Sounds like DiDio was going to get rid of Hal and replace him with John. Maybe my idea that he wanted to purge the straight white males from leadership roles in the DCU was correct.

Hey, DC has only five starring vehicles -- Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and the Flash. Aquaman and Green Arrow are not stars in the comics.

So think about it. Just make Jon Kent gay, replace Batman with Batwoman, sub John for Hal and replace Barry somehow, and you've accomplished what I think DiDio wanted to do.

Im surprised they dont make black lighting a top guy since his cw show is doing well and he now leads the jla in the young justice outsiders animated series. He took batman's leadership role. I actually enjoy black lighting even though i only saw the first season. Im very behind

Just a shot in the dark here, but I'm wondering if Jo's ring is going to change how the Lanterns wield their rings after Future State? I'm guessing that she's in JL because of her ring being different, and I wonder if that is going to somehow be the Corps' solution to the CPB being non-functional?

By that logic Kyle should never leave the Corps, as his battery and ring (until retconned) were independent of the CPB. The same for Krona's Gauntlet, etc. Or Kyle could become a White Lantern again.

Too bad there's not a Blue Lantern along with them!

^I got the Harley one, but wasnít particularly impressed (except with the cover). I only plan to get GL and JL (which has a GL). Both are out today. Should allow me to save some money this month (which is good because Iím paying off a big credit card bill). I donít really care about these possible-future stories.

I really hope they don't actually go the route of the GLC losing their rings in the comics. That direction has been done, and I have no desire to rehash it.

EDIT

It doesn't seem like Future State is going to be lasting. The bat books (and I think others) last month said the current story would continue in 2021 but Future State was next month (Jan.). Also, the beginning of the one FS I read (Harley) had a bubble at the beginning saying FS was one possible future consequence of Death Metal.

Well, they already took a massive shit on Bruce in FS:Justice League by saying Batwing's brother did the one thing "his predecessor couldn't do. Save Gotham."

So they're going the Marvel way of these POC replacement not being as good as the White Heroes that they're replacing, but being superior in every way possible.

I seem to recall that they were about an inch away from killing off John Stewart sometime around/after Blackest Night but they stopped just short of it. Didio would have been the one pushing that, same as he once attempted to with Dick Grayson.

So wait... the new Batman ISN'T Luke Fox but now some brother of his? What in the actual fuck?! I didn't get that as FS JL and Shazam are all I've bothered to read. I saw Jo is the "best detective in the multiverse" and not Batman, so she got to shit on more than one character. I mostly picked up FS JL because that Batman redesign is awesome, and I'd hoped to see more on that new Flash's backstory coming from another Earth.

If it were me making a possible future Batman, rather than have a broke Bruce Wayne or some kid of Lucius Fox with a ton of money/resources.... I'd have went with a broke 20-something Duke Thomas. Imagine where he'd be without a Bat-family like Bruce's to fall back on, and how interesting his struggle to be a hero would be without the resources he was once blessed with. Plus he's a metahuman! We never really see metahuman versions of Batman. Visually I'd go with something more like Bruce's Dark Detective FS look, maybe even with his own gang of Bat peeps like returning faces from the We Are Robin gang.

I really liked when Jean Paul Valley was dubbed the "Agent of the Bat" and would probably roll with that had Duke been the next Batman and had his own type of street level Bat-family. Agents of the Bat sounds cooler to me now than the same old same old Gotham Knights.

And while I'm on the topic of Duke Thomas, I really wish we got the more Nightwing like persona for him in that future where he was called Lark. Signal is just a dumbass name, and his choice of weapon in that identity reminds me too much of Clownhunter's Bat-bat. How on Earth could he use it without killing somebody once in awhile even if by accident?
