Default "The Blackest Night" & the Black Lanterns

What are other folks' thoughts/hopes/fears for this arc?

As I stated in the GL#25 thread, the symbol for the Black Lanterns is Blackhands.

Since the Black Rings empower the dead, could we see Hal's dad receive one? For that matter, what about Katma Tui or Kyles mom? Dead members of both the GL and Sincorps could theoretically get one.

Also, since these rings are probably going to be powered by the Anti-Monitor (it looked like a Battery was forming around him after he crashed) and since the Anti-Monitor sucks the energy of positive matter universes, do you think these rings will suck the power out of the other coloured Rings? Similar to both Blackhand and A-M.

Interesting theory. I didn't even catch the Black Hand connection but I guess it makes sense. I can't wait "Darkest Night!" Maybe Tomar-Re will come back and fight Tomar-Tu. That would be cool. Or hell Abin Sur should come back!

The symbol on the ring...

Is the same as the symbol on his chest.

Default "The Blackest Night" arc in 2009

I must say, while GL #25 was stellar, the last couple of pages with the whole "Across the Universe, the dead will rise" thing with the hands popping up... I was a little taken aback.

Kind of a "wtf... so we're gonna get Lanterns versus The Zombies?" moment. I'm sure they'll make good by it, but it kind of struck me as cheese, a bit. I've warmed up to it since.

I bet Nekron's involved.

I'm thinkin that the Black Lanterns are the Empire of Tears or sumthin like that. I wouldn't bank on the color lanterns lastin very long or past The Blackest Night arc. If they play it right, the black night could be as good as the SCW.

Yeah, no way are the other colored Lantern Corps lasting indefinitely. The Sinestro Corps will always be a great counterpoint to the Green Lantern Corps, and there's been some good evidence brought to the table so far in indicating the Star Sapphire Corps as being a logical evolution of the Zamarons' Star Sapphire project, but beyond that... the rest are just going to seem redundant in the long run. Maybe a merger of the Red and Sinestro Corps, down the road.

I'd prefer 1 lantern for color but...at the worst we'll get the red/blue/pink for the long run.

I don't see how the Blue Lanterns are going to be much different than our Greenies.

Anybody else notice that the symbol on the black rings was the same as the symbol on the revamped Black Hand? Not sure what that means, exactly. I'd be a little disappointed if the power behind the Black Lantern Corps was that race of German-speaking aliens. Maybe somebody bigger was employing them?

I have my own little theory...

It hit me today while talking with friends, trying to explain to them the awesomeness that is Green Lantern (They dont read comics. Their loss.). I told them about these "Black Lanterns" and they laughed. They said, "What are they gonna do? Bleed on the Green Lanterns? And why aren't there white lanterns?"

It hit me. White Lanterns. Instantly, sixth grade science class played over in my mind. Black is the absence of all color. White, on the other hand, is the combination of every color. I called them geniuses and began to concentrate on what could play out. What if its more than just "willpower and fear" that band together to save the universe? What if every Corps chooses a representative, their best soldier, to become their "White Lantern"? They'd have the abilities of all the Corps put into one ring.

That would be really awesome, in my opinion.

Hal or anyone else rising to become the "White Lantern" runs the risk of being taken too literally.

They might go that route, though.

I believe that eventually all the other colors will merge into rainbow bright. No seriously, I think by the end of Blackest Night, only the G.L. Corps will survive.
Geoff mentione Blackest Night wont start for 18 months, so maybe from now until then we will have the"War of Light"? Just a guess. I love this series!!!

Yo.

actually, Im thinking the "Black Corps" may have something to do w/Nekron, Lord of the Undead.

that guys was a major beast when the GLC fought him years ago, and considering all of the signs point to death & decay........having the A-M fuelling that black CPB kinda makes sense.

thats my $0.02 anyways.....

Just some random thoughts:

1. Orion would make a great Red Lantern, if he survived the Death of the New Gods. Can''t think of anyone with more anger and rage than Orion, but I doubt that he would fit into this storyline.

2. I would love to see Darkseid put Superman Prime down for good, whether or not it happens in a GL book. Darkseid should be the only villian in the DC universe that exhibits such pure dominance, but he's been treated as a punching bag lately. A good win over SMP would both put Darkseid into his rightful place and knock SMP down a notch. I still can't believe SMP over-powering a 5D imp. That's ridiculous.

3. I'd love to see Abin Sur be a key part of the Black Lantern Corps. Maybe make him the leader of the Black Lanterns and eventually have him turn on his masters. It would be great to see him involved and redeem the family name. I'd also like to see Tomar-Re, Priest and a few other dead lanterns make appearances as Black Lanterns.

Ethan van Sciver gave me the green light to shoot this picture out there, a teaser of the War of Light.
