Charles Van Doren, the dashing young academic whose meteoric rise and fall as a corrupt game show contestant in the 1950s inspired the movie "Quiz Show" and served as a cautionary tale about the staged competitions of early television, has died. He was 93.

Actress Bibi Andersson (Persona, The Seventh Seal) has died at the age of 83. Muse of late director Ingmar Bergman, for close to 4 decades, one cannot fathom the immensity of this loss. She represented a free-spirited hope and innocence that cannot be matched by any of today's actresses.

It is, but it's not like it was on "high ground" to begin with.

(I hate when I mix up my threads. I need to do better on that).

True, but the del Toro flicks have a healthy cult following, which doesn't sound like it will be the case for this one.

I get it, though. You started and mainly post in two threads; so you go to both and paste the wrong thing. Makes sense.

The science fiction and fantasy community has lost a beloved icon. We are extremely sad to report that author and SFWA Grand Master Gene Wolfe passed away on April 14th at age 87.

Gene Wolfe was born in New York on May 7, 1931. He studied at Texas A&M for a few years before dropping out and fighting in the Korean War. After his return to the US he finished his degree at the University of Houston. He was an engineer, and worked as the editor of the professional journal Plant Engineering. He was also instrumental in inventing the machine that cooks Pringles potato chips. He pursued his own writing during his editorial tenure at Plant Engineering, but it took a few years before one of his books gained wider notice in the sci-fi community: the novella that eventually became The Fifth Head of Cerberus. The whole tale was finally released as three linked novellas in 1972.

Thanks. Sometimes it's not easy keeping track of more then one thread, especially when you want to be consistent.

I don't know whether MTM was the best sitcom ever, but it's the best one I've seen.

WWE is saddened to learn that WWE Hall of Famer Gene Okerlund, the most recognizable interviewer in sports-entertainment history, has passed away at age 76.
He died of complications from a fall. Many elderly people die that way.

The Iron Sheik used to call him Gene Mean.

Yeah, I like the movie version of the Warrens and I do believe in angels and demons, but they definitely sound like cons from what I've read (Ed a little more mercenary than Lorraine from the reports I've seen).

The commentators and interviewers were a big part of selling the kayfabe back in the day and Okerlund was a big part of my childhood. This was covered back when he actually died, BTW (1-2).

Midnight Cowboy would probably get a PG-13 rating now.

Well, it's officially been re-rated and is an "R" now, but yeah, it's not even a hard R anymore. It still has enough sexual content, language, and a scene with pot that will edge it over a PG-13. Here's the rundown of the ratings and reason.

Personally, I think the movie is overrated, but it's not bad. I think it got more attention because of its edgy quality at the time. It showed a side of NYC that wasn't well covered at the time. Then again, I haven't seen it in years. Maybe I'd get more out of it with a repeat.
