Default WAR OF THE SUPERMEN.

Taken from DCU Blog

Quote:
Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

By Alex Segura

Superman has left Earth in the hands of Nightwing, Flamebird, Mon-El and the Guardian.

The tensions between Earth and New Krypton are slowly rising. The winds of war are stirring.

As our very own Dan DiDio has teased numerous times, 2010 is going to be a huge year for Superman. But just what is going on has not been revealed.

Until now. Welcome to the WAR OF THE SUPERMEN.

his lovely piece of J.G. Jones artwork is the cover to WAR OF THE SUPERMEN #0, which will hit stands 5/1/10, as the DCU FREE COMIC BOOK DAY title, and will kick off an event that is sure to change Superman’s status quo.

What more can we say? Not a lot — we can tell you writer James Robinson and artist Eddy Barrows will be taking point on the issue — but we did manage to rope SUPERMAN Group Editor Matt Idelson for a quick tease about what’s to come. Take it away, Matt:

“WAR OF THE SUPERMEN is the culmination of literally years of stories in the Super-books, all building to a destructive conflict which can have no victors. This Free Comic Book Day #0 issue is going to show the readers that no cows are sacred, and that they don’t want to miss this event.”

Not sated? Of course not. Then swing over to TIME’s TECHLAND blog for a few more nuggets of info.

Q&A with Editor Matt Edleson

There was a time when Superman was Krypton's last son. But lately in the DC Universe he's got some company. The events of the New Krypton series have seen thousands upon thousands of Superman's people join Big Blue on Earth and their very own new planet, New Krypton. As tensions rise between Kal-El's adopted home world and New Krypton war seems inevitable.

We sat down with Superman editor Matt Idelson to find out more about next year's big event, War of the Supermen.

Quote:
New Krypton was written across several tie-in books. Can we expect the same for the War of the Supermen? Or will it be self-contained mini-series like World of New Krypton.

The answer is both! While WAR OF THE SUPERMEN is designed so it can be read on its own, the stories of the characters-both the main characters and supporting cast-that have populated Superman's books in his absence will be told in the individual titles and some tie-ins.

Will the events of the Superman War ripple out into other books, Flash, Lanterns, Leagues? Is this THE event of 2010 for DC?

Right now, we're taking the concentrated approach, limiting the war to the main miniseries and logical titles (i.e. SUPERMAN, SUPERGIRL, etc.), but much like BLACKEST NIGHT, it's very possible the story will expand to touch upon other titles.

There's a Lantern corps (of many colors), there's an unofficial Flash Corps, there's an ever-growing Bat Family of characters, will the Superman War continue this new DC tradition with an increased Kryptonian Corps? Will we see new characters with an "S" on their chest?

Hmm, how do I answer that? You'll definitely be seeing a lot more characters with an "S" on their chests, but not the characters you might be thinking of.

What would you say to fans of Superman who've lost touch over the years. What if the last thing they read was about his death back in the early 90s. Can new or old readers jump into War of the Supermen without having to go back and read everything leading up to World of New Krypton?

Absolutely. A big part of our jobs (editors and writers both) is to make sure we remember that any given issue of any book could be someone's first. With a big, loud story like this, we have to be doubly diligent to make sure this thing is accessible, from the Free Comic Book Day zero issue right through to the finale.

Finally, will we get to see Bats (any Bats) beat up a kryptonian (any kyptonian) in War of the Supermen? Batman beating up Superman has almost become a staple.

We'd be remiss if we didn't have Bats (any Bats) beating up a Kryptonian, though we'll make sure it's a worthwhile Kryptonian. I mean, who wants to see Batman beating up the head janitor of New Krypton?

Is that about the worst image of Superman EVER, or is it just me?

Its just you. The Supergirl is pretty bad though.

Can't wait for this(mini-event). Hopefully its doesn't crossover with any(or a lot) of non Superman family titles, because then it'll lose its luster. I wonder if Robinson is writing this solo, and just letting Gates, Rucka and now Trautmann cover the other titles like its been. I really wish he wasn't doing Justice League of America so his entire focus could be on this.

Seeing how this is just a mini-event, I can get behind it. Kind of hope it ends with many of the Supermen being killed. So many 'supers' running around it kind of defeats the purpose.

No it doesn't. That's what Superman is all about. Its not the powers that make him super its the Krypton bred-Kansas fed man that makes him so great. That's what bringing the 100,000 Kryptonians was about. How does Kal adapt to his people, their wants/needs, his own wants/needs and the people he cares for on Earth wants/needs.

I'm pumped for this. Only drawback is that they've done so many crossovers within the Superman family titles that it'll just feel like World Against Superman: The Extended Version. Hopefully the regular monthly titles can tell a consistent story without losing plot points to the main series or any other title.

By "us" who do you mean? They aren't going to be fighting citizens. lol They may fight General Lane/Lex Luthor and Brainiac but that's not us either...These will be a Kryptonian War....maybe with some Daxams on the side.

I will probably get just the main book and whatever tie-in mini series (a la Blackest Night: Batman, Final Crisis: Legion of 3 worlds) there are. but no more than that.

I've been with the Superman books longer than Green Lantern. If Didio and Co decided that this Superman war is going to be a DCU wide event, they are frakin pushing it

I took that as a no. I think he just added the part of Blackest Night as a tease. With an already DCU wide event taking shape next year, it would just seem like too much to have a second one going as well.

I don't know; I liked the sound of "New Krypton/Earth War" more, but that's a minor quibble. Should be interesting to see 2 years of story build-up finally achieve pay-off...

Huh....I wonder if the Daxamites are involved if they wrap up the stall with Sodam Yat to have him included in some fashion....

I haven't been reading New Krypton, but I was wondering the same thing...might this be New Krypton vs. a now-powered Daxam?

Now that is an interesting theory. Perhaps it's where we would see the resurrection of Sodam Yat.

1. Matt Edleson not DiDio.
2. It doesn't fit. It just doesn't fit. It can happen but who would care? Not the people who've been reading the Superman books for the last two years. What context would bringing back a character seen only once in any Superman title(just a cameo I might add), where we(new and old Superman readers) know nothing of him. Giving a recap and resurrection of some random Green Lantern just wouldn't bode well for the story. That's forcing it. The focus should be on the characters we've come to enjoy seeing on a monthly basis, and that just doesn't leave any room for any Green Lantern, no matter his history with Daxam.

This #0 issue isn't even going to hit stores until May. If the event is anything like Blackest Night, the #1 won't drop until July. That gives DC from February through the summer to link up action in the DC Universe in between Blackest Night and War of the Supermen.

And I ask you how do you honestly think Blackest Night will effect this storyline? If Yat comes back any time soon, it should be in GLC or Blackest Night. Coming back in this storyline would be forcing a useless cameo upon the readers. I don't understand what release dates have to do with it. Its not a question of can they, its a question of how stupid would they be to do it.
