Frankenfish (2004)

"Some strange fella stick his hand in your hole, wouldn't you bite him?"

Not an Asylum flick, but pretty much on that level.

The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966)

"She came home last night and vibrated for an hour!"

American Psycho (2000)

"They don't have a good bathroom to do coke in."

Yep. Not sure if that or Devil's Backbone is my favorite from him, but I love them both (and own 'em). The Alice/Dorothy-like questionable reality is well done here.

Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer (2007)

"So, he ate your hand? How did you dig the hole?"

Good effects and the acting is fine, but it's a horror comedy and it's just not very funny (or at least is pretty slow-paced on the humor).

Casper (1995)

"I'd kill for a pinky."

Creepshow (1982)

"Come on Harry, the maiden fair waits for her knight in shining corduroy."

I really didn't like it, though I might not have watched it in the best way (streaming and broken up through the day). I didn't even understand that the girl was supposed to be the same one---I figured she was just possessed by the same demonic presence---until I read it online. It would've helped if they used the same actress aged or something.

There are movies where I don't mind bleak endings or enigma, but this wasn't one of them for me. I'm very divided about some of what these critics are calling post-horror or humanist horror. I loved It Follows and A Quiet Place. I like Don't Breathe and Killing of a Sacred Deer. I found It Comes at Night, Hereditary, and The Witch very good, but probably not something I'll re-watch (they're not 'fun'). But I hated Babadook and didn't dig this one either despite both being favorites of current horror fans.

I think, in this case, it was the lack of identifying. I don't feel sorry for the girl from Sabrina because she's distant and unhuman from the first. The older girl wasn't much better; so I didn't care what happened to her either. The only characters I felt any kind of connection to were the poor parents. All the characters in these movies feel weird and unreal, which makes it harder for me to be invested in them.

God, I remember seeing Creepshow as a kid. The crate story freaked me out, but the rest of it was pretty good (though the part with King as a plant hillbilly was also unsettling and makes you feel sorry for the poor bastard).

Wasp Woman (1959)

"You're as bad as she is! Oh, women!
-Men! Every time you search for an answer, you always come up with women."

The Corman classic turned 60 yesterday.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

"Is that just revolting? All greasy and gritty; it looks like it's molting and tastes like, ... well, pity a woman alone with limited wind and the worst pies in London!"

Creepshow 2 (1987)

"I feel the need, the need for weed!"

Yep. I showed it to my folks for the first time. I told my mother as a King fan she pretty much had to see it since it was his only full collaboration with his friend George Romero and his longest acting part. But yeah, even though his bit is played for laughs it's actually pretty disturbing as are all whole stories to me about losing your humanity.

I'm going to try to fit in part 2 tomorrow. It's not as strong a movie and only one story is by King, but I still like it a lot (all three stories).

Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween (2018)

"You just ate half their family."

Evil Dead II (1987)

"We just cut up our girlfriend with a chainsaw. Does that sound fine?"

[Rifftrax:] Halloween (1978/2007)

"Why are we friends?"

The Dallas Connection (1994)

"You should have read your fortune cookie."

Dolemite Is My Name (2019)

"Is there any angle that you could shoot this, where it looks like he's actually kicking him?
-There is no such angle."

Excellent Netflix biopic about Rudy Ray Moore. Put me in the mood to rewatch the Dolemite movies.

Dolemite (1975)

" If you ever see a ghost, cut the motherf***er."

I really need to get back to watching the Sidaris set I have.

Of course, now I want to watch the Dolemite films, since I'm not a kid anymore and I want to see the inspiration for the Son of Dolemite sketches Mad TV used to have, which I loved.

Enemy Gold (1993)

"And when we find them, we can hunt them down like small animals, and no one will be able to hear their cries of pain and despair."

The Veil [aka Barbarian] (2017)

"Dominion is freedom."

Pretty boring post-apocalyptic barbarian flick. I definitely lost the plot at some point, but didn't care enough to rewind and figure out who was related to whom.

I vaguely remember that sketch and I would not have known the movies at the time either. They're quite fun, but the Murphy film could be a good intro; like watching Ed Wood before Wood's movies.

Spider-Man Far From Home
Really solid follow up to Endgame with a great take on a classic villain.
Plus Night Monkey may be new favorite European superhero.

X-Men Dark Phoenix
Surprisingly good, though my expectations were admittedly low.
Ultimately a fairly solid conclusion to the Fox franchise.

The Day of the Warrior (1996)

"We're gonna get killed!
-I've told you a thousand times, you've got to think positive!
I'm positive we're gonna get killed!"

What Keeps You Alive (2018)

"It's nature, not nurture."

Pretty good survival horror. The first turn was pretty shocking.

The Human Tornado (1976)

"Jimmy, if a snake were to bite me on my leg, what would you do?
-I'd suck the poison, Dolemite!
Well, Bo! What if a snake were to bite me on my a**?
-I guess you'd be a dead muthaf***a!"

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)

"Buckaroo, I don't know what to say. Lectroids? Planet 10? Nuclear extortion? A girl named John?"

Showed this to an 80s-loving friend for the first time.

It's hard to believe that a woman who looked that young and healthy 23 years ago could be dying of late-stage dementia.

C.H.U.D. (1984)

"Are you kidding? Your guy's got a camera. Mine's got a flamethrower."

A friend came over to watch a horror movie and I recommended this since he hadn't seen it.

I Drink Your Blood (1970)

"Let it be known, sons and daughters, that Satan was an acid head. Drink from his cup. Pledge yourselves and together we'll all freak out."

Starts on a hippie satanist group but becomes a zombie-like rabies plague.

The Art of Self Defense

It's an interesting look at a man beaten into fear and fighting back against it. Fairly well made with some solid performances, but I'm glad I rented it instead of buying it as I originally planned. It's worth watching, but take note: it's billed as a black comedy, but I think a more accurate genre label would be absurdist drama.

Superfly (1972)

"[Y]ou go get you a gun and all those black folks you keep doin' so much talkin' about get guns, and come back ready to go down, then I'll be right down front killin' whitey. But until you can do that, you go sing your marching songs some place else."

Rewatching some key movies that Black Dynamite most took from before concluding with yet another view of that masterpiece.

The Lair of the White Worm (1988)

"Do you have children?
-Only when there are no men around."

Should've seen this a long time ago. It had more humor than I was expecting based on what I knew of the plot.

Revenge (2017)

"Women always have to put up a f***ing fight."

[Rifftrax:] Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)

"This kid goes from zero to Jerry Lewis in 2.8 seconds!"

L.E.T.A.L. Ladies: Return to Savage Beach (1998)

"I was born for water sports."

Alright. This finishes my Andy Sidaris DVD set and was his last film. Indeed, since he mostly did TV work before this, I have only missed like 3 movies he ever directed. I had fun, but there's so much repetition (like RC vehicles used to explode crap).

The Incredibles 2 (2018)

"I eat thunder and crap lightning!"

I liked this more than the original. I don't know what it was that clicked with me, because the villain was somewhat similar (devil you know and all that) and I didn't care for the romance subplot. I did really like Elastigirl's new costume (or pre-Incredible one, I don't remember if it was her old design reused or a new take on it).

I did like that it ended on a high note, with heroes being unbanned. Should make the inevitable third one a big showcase of various heroes.

That was last week, while tonight's special was...

Blades of Glory (2007)

"If we went to a Halloween party dressed as Batman and Robin, I'd go as Robin. That's how much you mean to me..."

My one boss really loves this film, and I can see why. Ferrell plays such a lovable jerk that it's hard not to love him, and Arnett was great as the snobby elitist brother. And goddamn I loved seeing Craig T. Nelson again, really brings back the Coach sitcom memories.

And damn, the skating routines were a treat to see, especially when they started the big finish set to the fucking Flash Gordon theme song. Glad I saw this. Even Dad got a few laughs, especially when he saw Ferrell grab Heder's crotch while lifting him overhead.
