The Crow (1994)

"Nothing is trivial."

25 years old today.

Stone Cold (1991)

"You know, it's in moments like this that I think of my father's last words, which were 'don't son, that gun is loaded!'"

Natural Born Killers (1994)

"I don't really believe anything women say to me."

I don't have an opinion on this film. It wasn't poorly made or poorly acted, but I can't really say anything of it other than I watched it. Nothing really stuck with me, it was just a bunch of scenes of reckless psychopaths doing reckless psychopathic shit. The tonal clashing was so severe I found it hard to believe this is supposed to be a single story by a single director.

I kind of liked Harrelson's line about the key lime pie, how him liking or disliking it previously didn't matter because he was a different person then, because it was very self-aware of the progression of taste, and there was something about the whole flashback with Dangerfield that was, in a very dark and twisted way, reminiscent of Married With Children, and I got a laugh out of them stumbling their way into the field of snakes, but other than that, the film is just ridiculous bordering on farcical. I get that it's supposed to be a satire, but it felt more like a half-formed joke.

I only picked a quote because my dad laughed at the psychologist's response to Mallory's threat during Downey's interview.

I can't say I disliked this, more accurately, I just didn't care for it.

Amazing Grace (2006)

"Although my memory's fading, I remember two things very clearly: I'm a great sinner and Christ is a great Savior."

Once Were Warriors (1994)

"Our people once were warriors. But unlike you, Jake, they were people with mana, pride; people with spirit. If my spirit can survive living with you for eighteen years, then I can survive anything."

Lee Tamahori's adaptation of the novel, which looks at one Maori (the native people of New Zealand) family dealing with their and the community's cycle of poverty, alcoholism, and violence.

I actually disliked that movie the first time I saw it, but gave it another try and now I own it (which is not to say you should re-watch it nor that it would grow on you), but even at that it's not a comfortable movie to watch and I only picked it up because it was on sale. I was planning to watch it again on its 25th anniversary (in August). It's loosely based on the Starkweather murder spree.

Sumo: East and West (2003)

"In sumo there are three ideals: spirit, skill, and body."

A documentary looking at sumo wrestling in general, but particularly to what extent non-Japanese have been included or not. Interesting.

MST3K: Bride of the Beast (1954/1993)

"Don't worry, he's as gentle as a kitten.
-Yeah, a big, bald, deranged kitten that could snap your neck like celery."

I've gotten into the habit of watching BotM and Plan 9 in some form every year on their anniversary, whether it is a big one or not (like the 64th).

Really enjoyable. It got convoluted at the end a bit, I think tone-wise it was a bit uneven, and I wish they had developed more of the supporting characters better, but I thought they did a solid job at introducing The Pokemon world, and the CGI of the Pokemon creatures themselves was great. Also Pikachu was adorable, I loved all his expressions.

Mother's Day (1980)

"You tell your brother Ike a hound dog that comes home with nothing in his mouth should keep it closed."

Easy Rider (1969)

"Did you ever wanna be somebody else?
-I'd like to try Porky Pig.
I never wanted to be anybody else."

The counter-cultural and highly influential classic turned 50 today.

More anniversaries (20th and 10th) last night (5/13):

Notting Hill (1999)

"Happiness isn't happiness without a violin-playing goat."

Up (2009)

"Hey, let's play a game. It's called See Who Can Be Quiet the Longest.
-Cool! My mom loves that game!"

Up! is such a great film. Has these really sad moments in Carl's past, but it's such a fun adventure you keep watching.

The Mask of Zorro (1998)

"He is trained to kill. You seemed trained to drink."

Mausoleum (1983)

"No more grievin'; I'm leavin'!"

Killing Season (2013)

"You have no idea how lucky you are. My country has beauty, but there is an invisible layer of blood caked over everything."

Disappointing. The timeline is a bit wonky for De Niro to be an American Bosnian vet (they shave 7 years off his life, but even that's a stretch for an in-field soldier).

It's really impressive storytelling. Ellie dies about 7 minutes in (and she's probably not in the first 2). That's a brief time to make the audience care, but they do (everyone mentions it).

Hell man, even before that, when they're in the doctor's office being told they can never have kids...

I felt so goddamn sorry for them, and then she passes and the floodgates just opened up.

[Rifftrax:] Krull (1983 [2018])

"Join me in my cowardice!"

The Wrong Trousers (1993)

"It's no use prevaricating about the bush."

Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown (2008)

"He defined the themes and obsessions of 20th century horror and as we chug on into the 21st century, it doesn't seem to be going away."

Saw this pop up on Youtube and thought it was something I saw before (probably when it was new), but took the chance. It was, but it was cool to re-watch because I've read a lot more HPL (most of him, really) since I first saw this.

Road to Perdition (2002)

"I'm glad it's you."

Jesus, this came out when I was a sophomore in high school. Always wanted to see it but never did, until SEVENTEEN YEARS LATER.

Whatever. I get '30s-era gangsters starring Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, and Daniel Craig, which is a huge deal.

I love seeing these period films, everybody wearing suits and the Tommy guns everywhere. Seeing Hanks with a mustache was strange, he doesn't look right with it, and Newman being old as hell (and with an Irish accent) was jarring. But goddamn it was great to see a vengeance-driven Hanks tear half the world apart demanding an answering for what Craig and Newman did to his family.

I liked the family touches, his one son wondering what he did for a living and the other just wanting to read Lone Ranger stories (those take me back to my own childhood, my paternal grandfather watching the pilot on VHS because that was the only Western I knew we had). My dad and I had a chuckle at the way Michael Jr had to practice getaway driving, especially when he drove slowly in the one scene (I especially liked how Hanks told the manager to keep some cash and he initially refused but then did anyway; my dad also like Nitty's inclusion into the story). I also smiled when Jr asked for $200 and then asked if he could have had more, such a humorous and intimate moment.

That scene in the rain was intense, I really can't say enough about it to properly do it justice. Jude Law's character was a total dickhead, almost as much of a bastard as Craig's.

Overall a very satisfying film.

Godzilla (2014)

"Mommy, look. Dinosaurs."

Savage Weekend (1979)

"When you came to me in the woods I thought 'Wow, here's a man with some imagination'. Later I realized you were just a silly jerk who gets all his ideas from girlie magazines."

Disappointing for a movie right at the infancy of the slasher boom.

[Rifftrax:] The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II (2012/2013)

"More soft piano music and reading; I love horror movies."

My full-moon werewolfd pick this month. I'm a little sad to be done with this riff series. It was a good way to re-watch them.
