So...what I took out of this issue:

Carol's only with Kyle as a stopgap, while she hopes Hal gets his crap together so they can go back to dating.

Carol's a jerk.

Ok, Hal is definetly trying to be Kyle... the mask, the ring and now Kyle's haircut??

Like Carol said, Hal need to figure it out who the hell is he. And dont take her for granted.

Its good that Carol is happy with Kyle. She deserves to be happy.

Hal went to Earth to be alone, and then Guy shows up (twice), Barry, and then Carol. What's a GL got to do to get some private time? Sit down, watch a game or two on the TV?

Artwork was terrible, what's with the "glowing trail of what might be a glowing ring on their fist"? Half the faces weren't recognizable. And a big spoiler of Pieface fans - the editors at DCnu52 stuck it to you again.

2/5 stars

Hmmm, written out of existence? Race change? Now a woman named Thomasina? Gay?

Actually, I'm assuming it isn't him being written out of existence, since that would be unlikely to be made explicit in an issue...he just wouldn't show up. Trying to think what else could be construed as "sticking it to us" by some. The character was been largely irrelevant in GL for YEARS. It would seem kind of lame to bring him back only to make a major change to him at this point. Just leave him gone.

Still, unless he's coming back as a major supporting character in the title, I can't imagine ANYTHING they do with him will matter all that much, to me, anyway.

If Green Lantern had a good writer who was an actual fan of GL and not hired off the blue, then maybe we wouldn't be getting so many terrible or average issues, one after the other.

Also it would incredibly stupid to erase Tom from continuity or change his gender considering he showed up in New Guardians #0, but then again this is Venditti, so I wouldn't put it past him.

The fact that they put Hal, Guy, and Barry in a bar and Guy never once brings up his own Warriors bar tells you none of the current writers are old fans.

It certainly wasn't great, but I do like that they did a time-off issue.

Why? Do you think bar owners and former bar owners (he had the Oa bar too) just talk about that if they go for a beer? I actually assumed his swagger, his beer talk, and his expertise with the cue were winks and nods to those of us who remember his barkeep days.

I think Venditti did say once that he was familiar only with Geoff's run on GL, didn't he?

He said he skimmed it for reference I believe, but yes he was familiar with Johns run, that's it though.

He just isn't familiar with the fundamentals of the mythos. Sure, nobody expects him to have read every GL story that was ever published, but to imagine that it wasn't worth knowing about before Geoff wrote it created a huge hole in the bottom of his bag of tricks. And it showed.

If a comics company hired me to write a title that I wasn't very familiar with, I'd go to great lengths to become familiar with it. And if I didn't bother to do that, I'd fully expect to flop on it.

I concur. Venditti seems to have done alright with his previous work, but honestly giving him major titles was a mistake. He doesn't strike me as someone who has a lot of knowledge of DC characters aside from say Batman or Superman.

Heck he apparently used the GL movie for his reference too. Wow!

How long would it take you to get reasonably up to speed on any title? Two months of hard work, maximum? And of course you could continue educating yourself about it while you were writing it. IMO there's just no excuse for not putting in that effort.

Some people are just too lazy I guess. Maybe for all we know Venditti could have been facing editorial mandate or something. Either way I probably won't remember his GL run with much fondness.

Maybe it's more along the lines of "I don't need to bother with that."

Yeah, probably. Still, it would have been nice if he had more knowledge of the GL mythos. Maybe his run could have actually been better.

The surprise for me here is having Barry Allen catching up with Hal, that was until Hal ditched him and Guy.

So did anyone else see this issue as Carol saying she's just waiting to get back together with Hal? Another point in the "Kyle and Carol's relationship is dumb" category.

Yeah, she kind of said if he just fixed whatever was "wrong" it could happen.

Hal should forget about her, she's all drama. He should hook up with Arisia again...

To be honest I never see Hal and Carol having much chemistry.. they are too alike, both are pilots, they grow up and are too familiar with each other almost like brother and sister. Everyone expected them to be together (or at least Hal) Arisa definetly was more interesting for Hal, and aside from Sodam Yat who is now in limbo he as no competence there, not to mention she was a Hal fangirl. Carol on the other hand is in love with Kyle and that would be an issue from now on if she ever returns with Hal.

Just please Hal pull you shit (and hair) together and stop looking like Kyle.

Plus they're both dominant, gung-ho personalities. In my experience, that can be a difficult match.
