Have you read Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane?
Awesome book. I haven't seen the movie. |

I had high expectations because I heard such good things about the book, and the cast is filled with favorites of mine. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to that hype.

Movies made from great books are never as good as the great books themselves.

Absolutely. Read what I said, and know that I could say a lot more.

Didn't live up to the hype because you didn't see it? Do, because it's better than just about everything on your list.

Not saying movies made from books are bad, but the book is almost always better.
Why do you think they want to make a movie from a book in the first place? ![]() |

Or, a lot of times, an auteur will take something and do his own thing. Kubrick's Clockwork Orange is different from Anthony Burgess' novel. PTA's There Will Be Blood is a completely different beast from Upton Sinclair's novel. I imagine you're just thinking of guys like Zack Snyder who try to make a shot for shot, word for word adaptation and end up with a lot less space and their own bastardized version of the original work. But, cinema can easily surpass its original novelized material, even if said material was great to begin with.
