Default What was the best volume of GREEN LANTERN ever?

How do the volumes stack up against each other in their entirety? V1 with alan,v2 Hals original run,v3 grey temple Hal and Kyle,v4 the geoff johns run....and all the rest not really sure how they order them now.

hopefully someone puts a survey up for us as well.

Well, for me Alan's run might come last. I liked the character when he was used later on, but his run just didn't interest me at all.

The others are harder to judge. I guess I'd rank volume 2 at the top simply because it established all the basic aspects of the mythology.

I REALLY like the beginning of Vol. 3, then it got kind of sucky, reaching its nadir with the abysmal Emerald Twilight (IMHO). I also enjoyed Kyle's run (post ET, anyway), but it too got a bit sucky in spots.

Vol. 4 started off with a bang and a lot of promise, IMHO, but after a great start got bogged down by constant events and pointless retcons, and dropped story elements that seemed promising (to me, anyway) to replace them with nothing except more and more iterations of spectrum stuff. And it trashed the Guardians. And gave us Mary-Suenestro. So it got annoying after a while.

Vol. 5... doesn't really have a lot to make it stand out.

So I guess if I had to order them, I'd go 2, 3, 4, then have a hard time deciding between 5 and 1 for the bottom spot.

No question about it for me. It's volume two (Hal Silver Age through GLC 224). Most of my favorite issues, stories, and characters come from it.

You could say I'm biased because that's where I started (they say you always have nostalgia for the place you start), BUT I only started really collecting and following it month to month in vol. 3. Even though I became a hardcore fan in the 90s, it's 70s Hal I most enjoy.

And a poll would be nice.

I love the latter part of Volume 2 the most. Maybe from about when Wein and Gibbons came on up to #224, with the Steve Englehart Green Lantern issues being the brightest highlight for me. I think things went down in quality some when the book become The Green Lantern Corps (and also became considerably cheesier in some ways), but I still enjoy it. That period really established some of the most legendary Green Lanterns and their relationships well, like Arisia, Salaak, Kilowog, Katma, and so on.

As for what the overall best volume is... I really couldn't say, because there are often parts in one volume I love and other parts I hate or have no interest in. For example, I like the early Gerard Jones stuff in 3 better than the majority of the stuff from 2. I guess for me it would be between 2 and 3, though. What I love the most is in 2, so I'll go with that. I avoid the great majority of 4, and 5 seems like basically the same thing as 4 + Simon Baz and First Lantern and Doug Mahnke and Billy Tan (none of which I like). I have honestly never even read anything from 1 and I don't think I will. Just doesn't interest me.

EDIT:
Yeah, I would say it is 2. Kyle Rayner had some fun stories, but overall, I'm not keen on the idea of the Corps being gone, and that took up a whopping huge chunk of 3. So, yeah, 2 for me.

If I had to rank them, I'd probably say 2, 3, 4, 1 (though I've only read the first collection), 5

I've only read bits of Vol 4, 5 and the Hard Travelling Heroes graphic novel of Vol 3 so I don't really think I'm fit to judge yet. I doubt Vol 1 & 2 would top my poll though, I'm not really a big fan of gold or silver age comics (I'd probably pick golden age over silver age easily though). I imagine I'd probably prefer vol 3, but I can't really judge.

Hard Travelling Heroes is from vol. 2. It started in the upper 70s issues. It was a concerted effort to make Hal more relevant and less straight-laced.

I'm not surprised. We have similar tastes in regard to Silver Age.

I pretty much agree with what Ed said about the Golden Age stuff.

I don't dislike it. The stories can be fun and clever, but for me it's hard to read just because it's slow (it's very wordy and repetitive) and predictable and the art was simplistic. That was fine for the day--it was a fledgling medium finding it's footing in a world of pulp paperbacks and radio drama.

The Silver Age (especially 5 to 10 years in as the Marvel revolution and Schwarz's refitting of the DCU were gaining ground) found a much better balance between art and words.

Nah. I was just prodding the Kyle fans. I actually liked a lot of that run, just a lot less than Hal stuff.

The first two years of the Gerard Jones run was the best, and that includes Emerald Dawn I and II, Mosaic and Jones's run on Guy Gardner. Soon as Kevin Dooley got in there, it was all over. It's a little suspicious to me that Geoff just HAD to erase every bit of that.

Volume 3 is a mixed bag I think. The first storyline really sucked (never liked the Hal-walkabout crap), then got better but declined really fast.
After Emerald Twilight volume 3 got immensely better even though Ron Marz spent waaayyyyy too much time elevating Hal to this fallen hero whose high standards can never be achieved again status after his fall. He shouldn't have tried to apologize to all Hal Jordan fans during his run.
Judd Winick's run was entertaining too, but at the end volume 3 got really stale and needed something new.

However volume 4 had even more problems even though it started out quite good despite all the retcons.

Volume 2 started out too silver-agey for my taste but in the 70's it got really good.

So I think my order would be 2,3,4. I have never read volume 1 and don't care for volume 5.

What I actually mean to say was this by the way:
No volume is perfect, they all suck at some point.
