Oliver! (1968)

"Fagin, this sausage is moldy!
-Shut up and drink your gin."

50 today (funny to think all the kids are now 60+). Been many years sine I saw it, but I picked it up cheap a while back.

Conan the Barbarian (2011)

"When a Cimmerian feels thirst, it is a thirst for blood. When he feels cold, it is the cold edge of steel."

Cosmos: War of th Planets (1977)

"I feel this is my first victory over machines."

AnothSo boring (and I probably have a higher tolerance for slow sci-fi than most). It did, however, pre-date Demolition Man with the idea that shared virtual sex will replace the real thing in the future. The music was decent.

Warriors of the Wasteland [aka The New Barbarians] (1983)

"We have been chosen to make others pay for the crime of being alive."

Italian ripoff of Road Warrior with some good bits.

Man of Tai Chi (2013)

"You owe me a life."

While the police attempt to take down an illegal fighting ring, the mastermind hunts for his next prime star. He finds one in a delivery man who practices tai chi, which traditionally is not used for fighting. As the protagonist fights more and more, he risks losing himself to bloodlust and disgracing his art.

The directorial debut of Keanu Reeves, who also plays the villain. I think Reeves did a solid job for this, because there isn't a wasted scene and the pacing is very good. You also get excellent fights and the camera work for them is steady and clear, not something amateurs would do (Bourne saga).

The main character has a great personal arc he goes through, transforming from a respectable if troubled young man into a ruthless, narrow-minded bastard before coming to grips with the kind of person he's been turned into. It's a really well-told fall from grace/rise from disgrace, and you genuinely see the hurt in his master's eyes when he goes too far, having pretty much completely lost his way and forgotten his lessons.

The style of the film is very distinct: you have a natural look, which you see best at the tai chi temple and in the "urban jungle" of Chen's apartment/city; and then you have this man-made austerity and starker urban tone as shown by Keanu's office/home and fighting arenas. It's very telling that the stage where Chen recovers his identity is basically a garden party/outdoor fighting ring.

Keanu as the villain is just utterly ruthless. This guy is basically Lex Luthor, this ultra-modern and trendy workplace and house, playing headgames with the cops because he's leagues above and ahead of them. His motivation for running an illegal fighting ring is also pretty savage, and Reeves's portrayal really cold and heartless, very impersonal and the exact opposite of Chen (which, in a way, is exactly the undertone that is given via Chen's fall from grace, that losing his way will turn him into a monster like Reeves). Yes, he seems a little wooden, but he's still fairly well written and again, his persona is an inversion of Chen's and the way of tai chi, so you can't really say he's poorly handled).

I really am glad I caught this, because I almost skipped it based on the somewhat-generic description Netflix gave; the story really is much better than it sounds.

Highly recommend.

Happy People: A Year in the Taiga (2010)

"Of course, a good craftsman will make good skis using good wood. Getting around in these is sheer pleasure. You might have factory-made ones. If you and go into the Woods, you'll drop dead from fatigue after 15 kilometers."

Get Smart (2008)

"I'm telling you what we're not, we're not people who jam staples into other people's heads, that's CIA crap!"

I thought this was decently funny, but I'm only passingly familiar with the original series.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

"Up yours with a twirling lawnmower!"

Zombie (1979)

"What is all this about the dead coming back to life again and... having to be killed a second time?"

I should've watched Night of the Living Dead for the fiftieth anniversary last night (Oct. 1), but I plan to see it at a film festival in a couple weeks and would rather it not have been recently re-watched.
I hadn't actually watched Fulci's classic (Zombi 2) in a while, but it's pretty awesomely raw.

Beyond the Gates (2016)

"It's the movie that made me want to be a cop...
-It's a terrible movie.
-He's a terrible cop."

Like a low-budget horror version of Jumanji where a couple brothers closing up the video store of their missing father come across a VHS-based horror board game that has real-life stakes. Not great acting and they could've used more details and examples of the game, but it was still interesting (though Netflix reviewers seem to have a lower view) and it had some cool pop culture references.

Grim (1995)

"What's it to you, Blondie?"

A group investigate the caves under their neighborhood and run afoul of a trollike creature. Not sure why this was in my Netflix queue nor why I didn't give up on it. The monster looked decent enough in quick shots, but his slowness and lack of mouth movement take away from any scares.

The Brain (1988)

"Dr. Blake wouldn't be on TV if he wasn't good!"

Hey, this is a Christmas movie too. I gotta remember that when I'm looking for Christmas-set horror (which I do every December because I can't really go a month with no horror, even the festive ones).

Wheels of Terror (1990)

"I'm practically on a Wheaties box.
-I don't think anybody wants to look at your face while they're eating."

A Star is Born - A very solid updating of a classic story. Bradley Cooper's directing debut is a nice look at fame, and how it affects us all. Cooper with his slow deep "drunken voice" is good in his role, but it's Lady Gaga who steals the show. Much of the film being tailored made to her talents. I quite enjoyed it.

The Windmill [Massacre] (2016)

"This isn't hell, it's Holland!"

Pretty good flick about a group of tourists in Holland all with dark secrets that seem to be picked off one by one by a big mutant guy or ghost with scythe (there's a bit of a mystery to it, so I won't say more).

Gerald's Game (2016)

"People are safe from ghouls and ghosts and the living dead in the daylight. And they're usually safe from them at night, if they're with others. But a person alone in the dark..."

Pretty good. This is one King book I haven't yet read partly because the idea of dying bound is one of the worst to me.

House (1977)

"Do you like watermelons?
-No! I like bananas!
Bananas?"

My second viewing (now as a movie in my BD collection), but this is impossible to describe. It's partly a Japanese haunted house story, but it's also a pop art experimental film. Definitely worth a watch for anyone into movies that are way out there.

Messiah of Evil (1973)

"They say nightmares are dreams perfected."

Could've been more focused and coherent, but alright for a free Youtube watch.

I really should watch that at some point, if only because it has that one dude who's turned into a pile of bananas.

Blade Trinity (2004)

"We call ourselves the Nightstalkers.
-Sounds like rejects from a Saturday morning cartoon.
Well, we were gonna go with the Care Bears, but, uh, that was taken."

Blade II (2002)

"You're human.
-Barely. I'm a lawyer."

Blade (1998)

"Oh, great. Now you're robbing him. You gonna rob me, too?
-How do you think that we fund this organization, huh? We're not exactly the March of Dimes."

Yep, but the actual change is off screen, so that wouldn't be a great reason to watch it. Still, I'd say House is a must-see for fans of Japanese movies, off-the-wall horror, or bizarre cinema. Even if you never watched it again, it's one of those cult films you can say "hey, I saw that" if you happen to come across a reference to it (like when I saw someone at a con wearing the t-shirt).
