Shin Godzilla (2016)

"There is no precedent."

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993)

"We've been so closed for so long, they've never seen the real beauty of our culture. Lets show it to them."

Monday (5/7) was the 25th anniversary of this movie, which is not great for historical accuracy, but captures the spirit of Lee well.

Just for the Hell of It (1968)

"Who cares, man?"

Thought this pre-gore JD drive-in movie from HG Lewis would be fun, but I guess it's the gore stuff that defined him. Couple good bits, but mostly boring. And the audio was crap.

This next one (about a club owner who exploits a rock band) was a little better, but not enough. Oh, Colonel Sanders is in it.

Blast-Off Girls (1967)

"Do we serve fried chicken? Whoo-wee! We DO serve fried chicken!"

Kung Fu Panda (2008)

"The Furious Five! You're so much bigger than your action figures! Except you, Mantis. You're about the same."

10th anniversary (5/15) of this pretty good cartoon series.

Superman II (1980)

"Well, let's see what trouble I can get into today."

R.I.P. Margot Kidder.

Blade Runner 2049

Excellent followup to the original. Great visuals, soundtrack, and story.

I'm really hoping they decide to make another movie, but having the first two be so good will make it a daunting task.

The New Centurions (1972)

"Maybe you can't change people, but you can help them. Maybe not much, maybe it's a losing battle. Maybe they don't like us, but I think they need us."

A good slice-of-cop-life circa early 70s LA. There's no one mystery or enemy; just jumping around in the day-to-day lives of a few cops, focusing on one in particular (Stacy Keach) from his first day with Scott as his seasoned partner.

Who Can Kill a Child [aka Island of the Damned] (1976)

"The whole world is crazy. In the end, the ones who always suffer the most are the children."

A British couple (one of which is pregnant) go to an out-of-the-way Spanish island for R&R only to find all the adults dead by the children's hands.

X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (1963)

"If thine eye offends thee pluck it out!"

Ghidrah: The Three-Headed Monster (1964)

"There's no such thing as brainwaves."

Yeah, I watched 2001 on the anniversary of the day of its world premier, though it was just my DVD.
I really wanted to see a special showing of Sunset Boulevard at my local AMC Wednesday, but it was a bad day for it.
I've come to like these special showings of old movies more than the new stuff.

Aside from a somewhat sluggish first thirty minutes, I really enjoyed this. Deadpool is hilarious as ever, and the references are great. Plus Brolin was a great Cable, also I really liked Domino. Also more Colossus is never a bad thing. A solid comedy sequel, which is rare.

Welcome to the Punch (2013)

"I'm paid to catch crooks, not get them elected."

This was better than I expected based on the Netflix reviews, but by no means a great action mystery.

The Warriors (1979)

"Can you dig it?"

Good to know. I missed #1 in theaters because I'm not a big DP fan, but grew to love it on blu ray. Gotta try to see this one in theaters.

If you loved the first, I'm sure you'll definitely enjoy the sequel. It's the same kind of "thing", less of a retread though. The gags, references, and fourth-wall breaking jokes are as top-notch as ever.

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)

"When we hate you, we're hating the dark side of ourselves."

The Legend of Billie Jean (1985)

"When you're rich, food isn't supposed to taste like what it is."

This is one of those 80s cult movies (about teens pushed too far, who become celebrity outlaws) I don't know how I missed so long. In a bizarre twist Helen Slater and Christian Slater play brother and sister and were mistaken as such even though they aren't related. I actually had it in my Netflix queue for a couple months or so with it listed as "very long wait" and then they suddenly sent it. Fun stuff.

Predator 1987
Predator 2 1990
AvP 2004
AvP Requiem 2007
Predators 2010

Been reading a lot of Alien/Predator novels, and decided to do a marathon. The predators official species name, sanctioned by Fox, is the Yautja, and even after all the sequels, I still think the 1987 movie had the best looking Predator. Looking forward to the new film in September.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)

"Don't you know that a man being rich is like a girl being pretty? You wouldn't marry a girl just because she's pretty, but my goodness, doesn't it help?"

Godzilla (1998)

"You call this coffee?
-I call this America."

Twentieth anniversary today (5/20). I have a lot of gripes with this one but I've basically become comfortable that it's a decent giant monster movie that should have been called something else. I do remember in '98 being so excited for a new Godzilla movie and an American shot at it. An acquaintance in High School was the only other G fan I knew and we both counted down the days. The day after the premier I was so disappointed (so much so that it took me a long time to re-watch it and I only owned it recently) and he said "you're just stuck on the old Godzilla." Well, I think I've won that debate with time. I've come to James Rolfe's view on the American G movies: this one is actually more entertaining than the 2014 movie though that one is closer to the real G in design and attitude and the franchise should be left to the Japanese.

Probably. I liked the 2010 Predators movie overall, but I wasn't thrilled with the two races thing and those big ones looking bonier. Still, I'm looking forward to the new movie. I like the Yautja more than the Xenomorphs (though I love that franchise too).

Baby Doll (1956)

"I feel cool and rested for the first time in my life."

This Tennessee Williams-scibed, Elia Kazan-helmed flick---about a southern man (Karl Malden) who agreed to marry a young bride (Carroll Baker) and wait to know her until her 20th birthday---was pulled early in its run when the Cardinal of NY condemned it. Eli Wallach plays Malden's vengeful competitor, who suspects the latter of burning down his cotton gin and plans to use the wife for revenge. The movie is sexually charged, but the studio-approved ban was still uncalled for, even in mid-50s terms (there were movies that got away with more earlier), because nothing is explicit and there's a mystery over what exactly happened. I decided to watch this (though I already liked Williams and Kazan's work) when I heard John Waters call it his favorite film. I didn't love it as much as the adaptations of Streetcar or Cat, but it was still really good and well done. It's a shame what happened to it did.

Hot Shots! (1991)

"You've got to be joking!
-Look, if I were joking, I would've said 'what do you do with an elephant with three balls?' ... You walk him and pitch to the rhino.'"
