Default Confirmed: Joshua Hale Fialkov Off Green Lantern Books

Now Joshua Hale Fialkov Walks Off Green Lantern Books?
Quote:
understand that Joshua Hale Fialkov has walked off both Green Lantern books he was due to begin writing, “Green Lantern Corps” and “Red Lanterns”.

We first reported that Fialkov was taking over those two comics last month, and DC later confirmed the news. But before his first issues are published I understand that he has chosen to curtail his run.

Just as yesterday, we told you that Andy Diggle had walked off Action Comics and today that’s been confirmed

Both incidents seem to involve repeated editorial changes to already-approved directions that have not been welcomed by the writers.

How many issues will ship with Josh’s name on them is not yet known. But as we discovered today with Supergirl, sometimes the change isn’t even reflected on the cover and the insides come as a complete surprise…

As ever, neither Josh nor DC Comics chose to reply to emails.

Jesus what the fuck man? What the hell is going on over there. Fialkov was on of the few new writers I was legit excited for taking over a GL book. Hell I was even probably going to start buying Red Lanterns because of that.

Can't we just let people write stories anymore without having 8 other people shoving their hands in it. Too many damn cooks at the DC kitchen man.

This is just absurd. I've no idea, obviously, if I like what he was going to do with the books, but that's beside the point. What kind of stupid company hires somebody to do a job and then won't let them actually do it? It sounds like he submitted storylines, had them approved, and THEN had them come back and ask for changes. That makes no sense whatsoever.

How does that even work? I mean, who approved the stuff in the first place, and then who came in later and asked for changes? If it was the same person, they need to get their act together. My fear, though, is that it WASN'T the same person. My fear is that somebody who isn't actually directly responsible for these titles, but who has an interest in maintaining some degree of control over where they go, might be meddling belatedly after the actual editorial team has given the go ahead.

Any ideas of who might fit that description?

Maybe, but I'd like to know that before I blame him.

Anyway, very sad to me. As A-Train said, this is the one I was looking forward to.

I doubt it was him, we've known since the beginning of the new 52 that changes have happened at a drop of a dime. Look at the Superman, Batgirl, and Static fiasco's. Something else is going on with this company. Especially after the creative summit where Didio apologized for all the creative changes.

Oh, I know. That's why I stopped short at just implying, and added the winky.

The GL titles have been affected by DC's stupidity over the last few years, but most of their internal problems they could keep quiet. Now the cancerous tension between editorial and the writers is spilling over into our neck of the woods. All it really took were some job openings to see how badly managed things are behind the scenes. I wonder what DC will do to stop the bleeding on this one?

Wait, though... he wanted to make the focus of both GLC and RLs about Guy coming to terms with the 5 minutes he was a Red Lantern 3 years ago? Seems ass, on multiple levels.

Bob Harras. Now I've never met the man, and it's quite possible that this is just a coincidence, but this is exactly what people complained about back when he was X-Men group editor, and then later Marvel's editor-in-chief. Just ask Mark Waid, Joe Kelly or Steve Seagle. And the trouble at DC seems to have started when he was promoted editor-in-chief over there.

Assuming that's an accurate summary, it doesn't sound promising, I admit. And it is POSSIBLE that, in that case, we might have "dodged a bullet".

Except for one thing. Supposedly his storylines were approved. I'm not terribly confident, if his direction DID suck, that the belated imposed changes of those that had approved it in the first place (assuming THAT is an accurate representation of what went down) is a recipe for improving matters...

Interesting. You took my snarky, semi-joking implication, found a different answer to my leading question, and fielded a plausible scenario. Well played.

DC should look at this as a sign from the heavens above...to get rid of Red Lanterns. Don't even fucking bother with a 21st issue.

I donít see any reason for them to cancel it. DC doesnít have too many top selling books that arenít Batman or Superman titles. Red Lanterns is one of the few (GL is a good selling property right now).

Of course incidents like the one that this boardís about are the reason why.
