FRIDAY 4:30 PM, 2ND UPDATE: Universal just upped its North American box office estimates for Snow White And The Huntsman to $19M-$21M for today and $50M-$56M for this weekend.

There is a palpable sense of relief around Universal Pictures and even Hollywood this afternoon as Snow White And The Huntsman is starting to show promise at the domestic box office. My sources are estimating that Friday’s opening looks like $17M to $19M, and the three-day weekend is shaping up as $48M to $52M. It now looks as if Snow White can break the post-Avengers early summer slump which has claimed 5 straight major studio releases so far. “Given the way the tracking has been, it was very difficult to project the scope of any opening for any film in the marketplace this season: good, bad, or indifferent,” a Uni exec just told me.

Universal had done an excellent job in lowering expectations for its big early summer tentpole. Tracking for weeks now had been underperforming and the studio kept telling everybody it expected only a $38M-$42M domestic opening weekend. That result would have been devastating on the heels of last month’s very disappointing domestic performance of Universal’s Battleship. (Today Comcast chief Brian Roberts told Wall Street that Peter Berg’s military vs aliens pic was a big “miss” affecting earnings…) But rival studios are telling me this morning that Snow White‘s tracking took a dramatic uptick at the end of this week and finished strong — to the point that Hollywood is now expecting an acceptable $50+M finish through Sunday. Certainly Snow White And The Hunstman‘s midnight screenings in 1,092 theaters bear that out: they grossed a promising $1.383M. That’s a far better per-screen average for the non-3D/non-sequel movie than last weekend’s slow-to-start Men In Black 3 which took in $1.550M midnights from 2,232 theaters even with the 3D premium and sequel marketing advantage.

Snow White and the Huntsman is projected to earn an estimated $55 million in its opening weekend, trouncing previous box office #1 Men In Black 3.

The action-packed fairy tale re-imagining, starring Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron, parlayed strong midnight screenings into a $21 million Friday, and it’s currently cruising toward an easy overall victory.

Men In Black 3 should remain a strong #2 with approximately $29 million in box office receipts, crossing the $100 million mark overall.

In its fifth week, The Avengers is still popular enough for third place, and will add $19 million or so to its enormous cumulative domestic earnings, which have already crossed the half-billion dollar mark.

The chart takes a big drop after the Top 3.

A quartet of holdovers — The Dictator, Battleship, What to Expect When You’re Expecting and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel — are all expected to fall into the $4.5-5 million range.

Johnny Depp vampire flick Dark Shadows is tracking toward $3.5 million, giving it the #8 spot.

After that, it’s nuclear fallout horror movie Chernobyl Diaries ($2.8 million) at #9 and The Hunger Games ($2 million) — approaching the $400 million overall mark — in the #10 spot.

Like mirrors, the numbers don’t lie.

The fairest movie of them all this weekend and sitting more than comfortably at U.S #1, is Snow White and The Huntsman. A solidly, stonking $ 20.3 million on Friday and midnight screenings take of $ 1.383 million – are set to deliver a $ 55.8 million domestic opening weekend.

It gets better. Factor in $ 39.3 million international and the weekend global haul pumps up to $ 95.1 million. Defying the augurs of some and exceeding the expectations of many, it’s looks like Universal’s gamble on first time feature director, Rupert Sanders, has paid off – and it’s not over yet.

Following the trajectory of this weekend SWATH is expected to grab between $250 – $275 million total, effectively making it the movie that bucked the post-Avengers slump, in a market still reeling from that juggernaut’s $1333.4 million estimated worldwide bank (incl this weekend’s expected $ 19 million B.O).

Suffering in the backsplash of The Avengers – Battleship, Dark Shadows, The Dictator – failed to light box office fire, and even Men in Black 3 with its $ 54 million opening last week, is a less-than-overwhelming punch for an existing franchise with a still popular leading man.

Considering one retelling of the Snow White story – Tarsem Singh’s Mirror Mirror (domestic debut $ 18,132,085, before taking $ 160,443,139 worldwide) – has already been and gone, the fact that there was even appetite for another Snow White speaks volumes.

It says this: An old story is still a new story if it speaks to something audiences want to see and hear. Reviews may have mixed, but enough critics had great things to say - and nearly all have been surprised by SWATH’s box office this weekend. One wonders why.

Surely The Hunger Games, The Avengers, Harry Potter and The Twilight Saga have taught us one thing: Fandoms are powerful. And if sufficiently harnessed, they can move mountains.

Chris Hemsworth may have swung the axe, but it was Stewart that swung the audience vote. This weekend, her massive fanbase – many of whom connected with her star long before Twilight, and certainly afterwards - came out in force to show the color of their money.

Theron and Hemsworth, though big names in the game, don’t inspire anything like the level of passion and sense of solidarity Stewart’s fans feel. Combine that with an across-the-generations, pop culture appeal - and it’s clear this 22 year-old can command a sizeable army on and off screen.

For a movie that cost 170 million, 37 million opening overseas is pretty weak.

MIB 3 held well in a few of its major markets and wound up in first place once again at the overseas box office. Meanwhile, Snow White and the Huntsman did solid business in its debut, while Prometheus put up some strong numbers a week ahead of its U.S. opening.

MIB 3 added $78.6 million to bring its foreign total to $274.6 million through less than two weeks in theaters. The movie eased 29 percent to $15.4 million in China, and held about even in Germany $5.34 million) and the U.K. ($4.88 million) following soft debuts in both of those markets. The movie also added $7 million in Russia, $5.3 million in Japan, $3.8 million in South Korea, $3.7 million in Mexico, $3.7 million in Australia, $3.2 million in France, and $3 million in Brazil. It's already passed Men in Black II's $251.4 million foreign total, and it should eclipse the first Men in Black's $338.7 million sometime next weekend.

Snow White and the Huntsman debuted to an estimated $39.3 million in 45 markets. It had fine starts in the U.K. ($5.5 million), Mexico ($4.4 million), Germany ($4 million), Spain ($3.8 million), South Korea ($3 million) and Brazil ($2.5 million), though none were standouts. Among major markets, it has yet to open in Australia, France, Italy, Japan and Russia.

Prometheus took first place in 14 of its 15 markets and earned an estimated $35 million this weekend. In Russia, its $11.1 million is the third-highest opening for a Fox movie behind Avatar and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, and its $9.99 million debut in the U.K. is the best ever for a Ridley Scott movie. 3D was a big part of that U.K. result, as the premium-priced format accounted for 73 percent of sales. Finally, Prometheus's $7.06 million start in France is the second-best debut this year for an English-language movie behind The Avengers. Along with its U.S. opening, Prometheus expands in to 35 markets including Australia, South Korea, and Taiwan next weekend.

International sensation The Avengers added $12.4 million in 54 markets, and on Sunday it became just the fifth movie ever to earn more than $800 million overseas. Also of note: on Friday, the Marvel flick passed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2's $1.33 billion worldwide total to move in to third place on the all-time chart. So far, The Avengers has earned $1.36 billion worldwide, and it should pass $1.4 billion long before its August opening in Japan.

Hugo debuted to a weak $2.67 million at 6,000 locations in China this weekend. The Martin Scorsese movie, which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards (and won five), has now earned at least $111 million overseas.

Next weekend should be a busy one on the international circuit: aside from the Prometheus expansion, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted opens in 28 markets including Brazil, China, France, Mexico, Russia and South Korea.

                  • Prometheus gets released this weekend. Will it be able to win, I don't know. All I know is that it faces some serious competition from Madagascar 3.

                    1. Madagascar 3 50-60 million
                    2. Prometheus 45 million
                    3. SW&THM 25 million
                    4. Men in Black 3 17 million
                    5. The Avengers 14 million

"Prometheus" tops the Friday with a pleasing $21.4 million and is headed for a $52 million to $54 million opening; "Madagascar: Europe's Most Wanted," posting a Friday gross of $20.5 million, will pull ahead for a projected $61 million weekend.

After a sluggish few weeks, moviegoing soared on Friday as Ridley Scott's sci-fi epic Prometheus and family tentpole Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted entered the domestic marketplace.

Prometheus, from 20th Century Fox, edged out Madagascar 3 to win the Friday race with $21.4 million. The pic is now expected to earn a better-than-expected $52 million to $54 million for the weekend.

That won't, however, be enough to keep up with DreamWorks Animation and Paramount' s Madagascar 3, which grossed $20.5 million on Friday for a $61 million weekend. The movie is another win for the successful franchise, and is benefiting from the pent-up demand for family product.

Early estimates indicate that the weekend revenues will be up a massive 180 percent over the same frame last year when Super 8 opened.

Madagascar 3 -- returning Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and David Schwimmer in the lead voice roles -- earned a glowing A CinemaScore and is generally performing on par with the previous two franchise installments.

Headlining Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron, Prometheus earned a B CinemaScore and appealed heavily to men (box office observers will be watching to see if the CinemaScore impacts word of mouth).

Fox and Scott are hoping that Prometheus launches a franchise, similar to Scott's blockbuster Alien series. Prometheus cost $130 million to produce after tax incentives and, unlike most summer tentpoles, is rated R.

Prometheus' Friday gross included $3.6 million in Thursday midnight runs, including a stellar $1 million from 294 Imax locations.

Prometheus and Madagascar 3 also are doing healthy business overseas. Prometheus began rolling out internationally last weekend, and has grossed north of $70 million through Friday.

Elsewhere at the domestic box office, Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman (also starring Theron) placed No. 3 on Friday, falling 63 percent from its opening Friday to an estimated $7.5 million for a projected $24 million weekend and putting its domestic cume at roughly $100 million.

Sony's Men in Black 3 came in No. 4, grossing $4.2 million for a domestic total of $126.2 million. Through Friday, the threequel has grossed north of $442 million worldwide.

The Avengers continues to land high up on the box office chart, placing No. 5 on Friday with an estimated $3.3 million. The Disney and Marvel Studios film has earned north of $564 million domestically.

Fox Searchlight specialty pic The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel grew its domestic cume to $28.7 million on Friday, and came in No. 6 with $935,000.

Both films overperform at the domestic box office, with ticket sales up a healthy 28 percent over the same weekend last year; "Madagascar 3" also dominates overseas.
Family animated tentpole Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted landed at the top of the domestic box office with a stand-out $60.4 million opening, besting the $50 million scored by Ridley Scott's sci-fi epic Prometheus.

Reversing a downturn that has plagued the box office since early May, North American box office revenues were up nearly 30 percent from the same weekend last year thanks to the two films. As a point of comparison, Madagascar 3 performed virtually on par with the first two films in the franchise, good news for DreamWorks Animation and Paramount.

Madagascar 3 also ruled overseas, debuting to $75.5 million for a worldwide bow of $135.9 million.

The international landscape is fiercely competitive right now as a number of studio tentpoles battle it out, including Madagascar 3, Prometheus, Snow White and the Huntsman and Men in Black 3. In Europe, they've got another competitior: The European soccer championships, which got underway June 8 in Poland.

Prometheus, which began rolling out in foreign markets the previous weekend, came in No. 2 at the international box office, grossing a strong $39.2 million from 50 markets for a foreign cume of $91.5 million and worldwide total of $141.5 million.

In North America, Prometheus, from 20th Century Fox edged out Madagascar 3 on Friday, but fell 25 percent on Friday (a typical pattern for fan-fueled fare).

Prometheus -- headlining Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron -- earned a so-so B CinemaScore and appealed heavily to men.

Fox and Scott are hoping that Prometheus launches a franchise, similar to Scott's blockbuster Alien series. Prometheus cost $130 million to produce after tax incentives.

Prometheus brought big returns for IMAX theaters. In North America, IMAX grosses from 294 theaters totaled $9.1 million, a June record for the exhibitor. Worldwide, weekend receipts reached $12.1 million.

Madagascar 3 -- benefiting from the pent-up demand for family product -- earned a glowing A CinemaScore and returns Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and David Schwimmer in the lead voice roles.

DreamWorks Animation's Jeffrey Katzenberg and Paramount have been tireless in promoting the threequel, which made its worldwide premiere last month at the Cannes Film Festival.

Elsewhere at the domestic box office, Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman (also starring Theron) placed No. 3, falling 58 percent in its second weekend to an estimated $23 million for a domestic cume of $98.5 million. Overseas, Snow White earned $24.6 million from 52 territories for an international total of $83.5 million and worldwide haul of $182 million.

Sony's Men in Black 3 continued to hold in well in its third weekend, coming in No. 4 domestically with $13.5 million and besting Snow White internationally with $38.3 million. The pic has now earned $487.5 million worldwide.

The Avengers continues to land high up on the box office chart, placing No. 5 with a $10.8 million. Worldwide, the Disney and Marvel Studios' pic hit $1.4 billion over the weekend.

Specialty titles The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Moonrise Kingdom continued to impress in North America, both landing on the top 10 chart.

Marigold Hotel, from Fox Searchlight, placed No. 6 with a $3.2 million from 1,298 theaters for a domestic cume of $31 million in its sixth outing.

Focus Features' Moonrise came in No. 10 with $1.6 million from only 96 locations for a domestic total of $3.8 million in its third weekend.

I'm surprised they didn't mention the fact that Prometheus saw a huge second weekend drop (it was originally going to be at 55 million), implying that word of mouth was very bad (that as bad as Green Lantern did).

Due to competition from the Euro Cup, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted largely avoided opening in Europe, though it still took the top spot at the foreign box office this weekend with a strong $75.5 million haul.

Out of its 28 countries, its strongest was Russia with $16.4 million. That's one of the Top 10 openings ever there, and is about on par with Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. It was also a monster in Brazil, where its $11 million debut was the best in that market since last July's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Other notable debuts occurred in China ($10.4 million), Mexico ($6.6 million), South Korea ($4.3 million) and Argentina ($3.6 million). It took the top spot in all of these markets with the exception of South Korea.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted out-grossed Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa in all of the above markets; ironically, the only major territory where it fell short of its predecessor was in France ($7.6 million), which was the movie's only major European debut. That could be a result of the Euro Cup, though the French team doesn't play until Monday.

Based on these strong openings, it's likely that Madagascar 3 at least comes close to eclipsing Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa's $423.9 million total. The animated sequel expands in to 15 more markets next weekend, though none of them are significant.

Prometheus added $39.2 million from 50 markets for a new total of $91.5 million. It opened to an impressive $6.8 million in Australia, and was also strong in South Korea ($4.3 million). In its second weekend in the U.K., the movie held first place with $5.2 million, and has so far amassed $25 million in director Ridley Scott's native country. Next weekend, Prometheus expands in to 14 additional markets including Mexico and Brazil, and it still has Spain, Germany, Japan and Italy on the horizon.

After two weekends on top, MIB 3 took third place with an estimated $38.3 million (off 45 percent from last week). It's top market so far is China, where it added $7 million for a total of $63.4 million. Overall, MIB 3 reached $352.1 million overseas, which is the highest foreign gross for the franchise ahead of Men in Black's $338.7 million.

In its second outing, Snow White and the Huntsman grossed $24.6 million for an early total of $83.5 million. It added $3.6 million in the U.K., $2.7 million in Mexico, and $2.6 million in both Brazil and Germany. Next weekend, the revisionist fairy tale epic expands in to France, Russia and Japan, among other smaller markets.

                          • Okay this weekend features the return of Adam Sandler who goes up against Tom Cruise (yet again), both films are probably going to lose to Madagascar 3 anyway.

                            1. Madgascar 3 35-36 million
                            2. That's my Boy (it is father's day weekend after all) 30-32 million
                            3. Rock of Ages 26 million
                            4. Prometheus 20 million
                            5. Snow white and the Hunstman 13-15 million

It's Déjà vu all over again at the Father's Day box office, as "Madagascar 3" and "Prometheus" should retain the No. 1 and No. 2 spots domestically, but for stars Tom Cruise and Adam Sandler -- typically big B.O. draws -- the numbers are anything but familiar.
According to early Friday estimates, Warner Bros.' "Rock of Ages" is tracking in the high-teens to low-twenties for the weekend while Sandler's R-rated "That's My Boy" is in fourth place with $13 million-$16 million.

The last time an Adam Sandler movie opened below $20 million domestically was 2007's "Reign Over Me," another R-rated Sony pic.

Co-starring Andy Samberg and made for $65 million, "That's My Boy" could see better days ahead as Sandler films typically generate solid multiples.

Meanwhile, Tom Cruise, who last appeared in Paramount's B.O. titan "Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol," is earning raves for his perf in Adam Shankman's adaptation of the "Rock of Ages" musical, but, according to one analyst, guys just aren't buying it.

"It's a tough sell," the source says of the femme-skewing pic. "I think the lack of humor in the trailers turned off a lot of men."

On the brighter side, "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" continues to reign in the U.S.

Paramount and DreamWorks Animation's 3D toon is suiting up for a $10 million Friday and $36 million-plus for the weekend.

Featuring the voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock and David Schwimmer, "Madagascar" has already cumed over $200 million worldwide and should cross the $100 mil mark Stateside tomorrow.

Fox's "Prometheus," which launched today throughout Latin America, is off 50-55% in its sophomore frame. Ridley Scott's 3D sci-fier, starring Noomi Rapace and Charlize Theron, is expected to gross between $20 million and $25 million through Sunday.

It was a jungle out there in Movieland over the weekend as the animated animals of Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, created by DreamWorks Animation, pounced on the likes of Tom Cruise and Adam Sandler to take in an estimated $35.5 million in the movie’s second weekend at the box office. The figure exceeded analysts’ forecasts, while Warner Bros.’ Rock of Ages with Cruise and Sony’s That’s My Boy with Sandler did not, coming in well below them with a disappointing $15 million and $13 million respectively. Those were puny amounts for movies starring the two actors, who are usually regarded as sure bets. Both of the new films, which finished third and fifth at the box office, were beaten out by the second weekend of Fox’s Prometheus, which came in at the low end of expectations with about $20.2 million, a 60-percent decline from the previous week. In fourth place was Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, which added around $13.8 million to its domestic gross, which now stands at $170 million.
