Red 2 (2013)

"I did not see that coming."

Ex-CIA legend Frank Moses is once more pulled into the thick of it as he and his friends are targeted in connection with a plot to use a weapon of mass destruction. They need to find out what the weapon is, where it is, and stop the real bad guys from getting their hands on it.

It's been a little while since I saw the first, but most of the same players return. Malkovich is easily my favorite here, turning in a wonderfully entertaining performance as Marvin. Willis's Frank is just as hard-nosed as ever, and we get a great youngblood in the form of Korean acting legend Byung Hun Lee (the scene with him and the Russian cops is stellar).

I thought the plot was a bit better this time around, some more "old flames and double crosses" elements keeping things humorous and attention-holding.

The stunts and fights were predictably over-the-top, with some good car scenes courtesy of Lee and Mirren; Willis gets a good workout in a couple scenes but now has to share the spotlight.

Overall a good film, definitely not suffering from the all-too-real syndrome of sequels being inferior.

Recommend.

Been in a Beatles mood lately (not that rare), so I watched the Lester movies:

Help! (1965)

"There's somebody been in this soup."

A Hard Day's Night (1964)

"The place is surging with girls.
-Please, sir, sir, can I have one to surge me, sir, please, sir?"

Skull Island put me in a mood to watch the three main titles, which I finished tonight with . . .

King Kong (1976)

"Let's not get eaten alive on this island."

White Heat (1949)

"Go read your comic books."

Things We Lost in the Fire (2007)

"So how come Brian never mentioned you?
-Because I'm a recovering heroin addict maybe.
I hate my wife. I mean, since we're sharing."

"Take the plane."

So, I liked it, but it was about on the level of #7; over-the-top-James-Bond stuff. I loved the opening Cuban race. I wasn't too happy that they accepted Shaw consider he's not only a callous mass murderer, but specifically Han's killer.
See, that's really the only problem that I had with the film. I could overlook all the special-ops military stuff and the over-the-top stunts and effects, the crazy sub scene and even the government letting loose two murderers to catch an even bigger threat to the world, but not Dom working with someone that's responsible for murdering a member of his "family." I mean, they made a film almost specifically about bringing Shaw to justice for Han's death, and now this?

Sinister (2012)

"Good dog. I don't wanna hurt you. I just wanna get my bat so if you come at me, I can bash your head in, okay?"

To Catch a Thief (1955)

"Danielle, you are just a girl. She is a woman.
-Why buy an old car if you can get a new one cheaper? It will run better and last longer."

Agreed. Racing vs spy movie is just a matter of my druthers. I still enjoy 5-7 despite Dom's crew being the new Mission Impossible, but that aspect was a character betrayal. Now, when I get to that bit in #7 when Sean asks Dom what he's going to do when he finds Han's killer I'll always think "invite him to dinner." And Deckard Shaw isn't just a guy that has happened to kill a guy in a fair fight. He's a guy that murders hospital orderlies and security because they're kind of in his way. He's a frigging psychopath.

The U.S. vs. John Lennon (2006)

"Is it naive to wish for peace? Is it naive to think that we can change the world? Yeah, probably, but it's certainly worthy of the thought process and the art that comes out of it."

Mechanic: Resurrection (2016)

"Those who have been hurt the most often have the greatest ability to heal."
