Default GL starter kit

So my dad watched GL last night for the first time and said he liked it so much he's considering reading some comics.

What do you think would be the best bet? The only comic he's ever read is Watchmen, so he's a total neophyte. I was thinking Emerald Dawn since I don't think he's going to catch up with the current continuity anyway. Maybe Secret Origins (though I don't have it in trade).

He liked the movie green lantern?!?! Jeez, then the comics will blow his mind and make him mental orgasm everywhere. Then you'll have to clean up the mess! Secret origin.

I suppose it would help that it's more relevant to the current line.

Emerald Dawn, as it's a standalone story.

Secret Origin, based solely on relevance.

Yup. Would have to agree also on Secret Origin. I guess this book would be a good start to know the Green Lantern Hal Jordan story.

And I leant the DVD to a married couple friends who are only familiar with comics via movies. They both liked it too. I swear the only people I've heard really moan about it are on here (I don't mean critics).

the fact he liked it might mean he wont like the comics, since the comics don't suck

You know a lot of people loved the movie.

Also Secret Origin worked for me with my friends also it shows that the yellow weakness can be beaten and not some ridiculous thing.

After watching GL on DVD again, my 10 year olds loved it and I liked it much better this time. I think we were too critical when it came out and now the pressure is off.

GL: Rebirth. Then GL: Secret Origin. The rest of the cosmos will take care of itself after that.

The answer will be different depending on whether he is likely to start reading the current comic on a regular basis, or if he just wants to read some cool, standalone stories. I think Emerald Dawn is a better standalone GL origin than Secret Origin is. (Frankly, I think it is a better story, period, but tastes differ on that, I know.)

If he's going to try to keep up with the current comics (which it didn't seem like you thought he would) THEN I'd say, sure, go with Secret Origin, Rebirth, Sinestro Corps War, War of the Green Lanterns, all those bits of continuity that (despite being at least somewhat thrown into question by the DCnU) are most likely to have relevance going forward.

Otherwise, there are other stories from the past that I, personally, enjoyed more than any of that stuff, in terms of being good, fun, standalone stories, rather than a small chapter in some kind of open-ended, massive saga (that seems to shift direction as it goes along). I've been enjoying GL for the most part in recent years, but if I were looking to give something to somebody with a casual interest, I wouldn't give them ANY of that stuff. I'd give Emerald Dawn, Emerald Dawn 2, I give them Archives, or GLCQ, or some of the old Annuals, or any NUMBER of interesting, stand-alone stories from the Kyle era.

I might give them Mosaic, just because I liked it so much, though that would require a good bit of preliminary explanation, I'd think.
