GREEN LANTERN Director Martin Campbell discusses Action Scenes, Blake Lively and Bond Comparisons

The folks over at CBM have provided some choice quotes from an interview Martin Campbell did with SFX Magazine. Read what the director had to say about his cast and their roles, comparing GREEN LANTERN to the James Bond film Casino Royale, and more below.

On working with the whole cast:
Quote:

"Well, obviously Ryan can do just about everything. He's got the humour and he's got the serious and the physicality. He looks great. He totally fell into the character and he brings a sort of sense of humour to it, which I think it needs. So he couldn't have been more ideal. The same with Blake. I think Blake is now 23. She's very young but she's someone going on 60 in terms of her head, because she's very intelligent. She and Ryan work very well together. Sinestro was a difficult choice. He goes over to the dark side in the comics, so he had to be somebody very strong and powerful and magnetic. Of course, Mark Strong made a terrific Sinestro. One of the exceptional character in this is Peter Sarsgaard doing Hector. He's turned out to be one of the strongest characters in the movie."

Comparing Green Lantern to Casino Royale:

Quote:
"It's not dissimilar to Casino Royale. In that case, Bond is a rough diamond and by the end of it he becomes the James Bond we know. Our story really is the first chapter of Hal Jordan, a character who, on the face of it, should never be a Green Lantern. He's irresponsible. He has a lot of this baggage. But ultimately the ring keys in on all of those good qualities that make him a contender to become a Green Lantern. Not only a Green Lantern, but one of the greatest Green Lanterns. That story is what we're telling in the first one."

On what he finds interesting about the character:
Quote:

"His weapon is psychological. There were two aspects. One is that he goes to the middle of the universe to become a Green Lantern. The other is that his power derives from his mind. Rather than have inherited superpowers, or be weakened by Kryptonite or anything like that, it's about the focus and strength of his mind forming constructs. It's that whole aspect of it, which of course is very different from any other superhero.

The first thing all your instincts tell you is 'Let's go way out there. He can construct anything with his mind. If he focuses his mind, the ring can create anything.' So the mind runs wild. On the other hand, if he's responding to any particular crisis then the construct of choice has to be a construct that solves that particular problem. There's practicality to the choices that he makes. If there's a pram running down the street out of control, you don't create an earth digger with a great big bucket on the end to reach down and grab the baby. What you'd do is probably create a giant hand or something to stop the pram. There's sort of logic. We had what we called a cheese-meter. We'd say, 'Alright this is what we're gonna do...' Then if our cheese-meter rose and it just became too cheesy or too ridiculous we would yell and say, 'No, no, no. That's not right.' So we'd have that throughout the movie, our cheese-meter, to try and prevent ourselves from going overboard."

What can we expect from the action scenes:

Quote:
"I want the fights to knife fight in a phone booth - quick and fast and dirty and these big grand sweeping movements. I don't see any point having people be smashed back a 100 yards into a brick wall and then immediately getting up and continuing to fight. Things have to have a grounding in reality. I always do that. You find movies where superheroes can simply take the most incredible punishment without batting an eyelid...To me there's nothing in that. I just don't believe a word of it. I always think that action has to be grounded in a basic reality to make it work, without making it too ridiculous. The thing is these films cost so much money, and we have a limit on budget and things. So we couldn't get into what I call huge multi-character gigantic fights. We just couldn't do that. We just didn't have the money to do that. So that played into making the action more naturalistic. There was cause and effect."

Sound doesn't alienate the deaf thanks to captions and subtitles which were developed to help that subdivision of the populace enjoy films (and it has worked very well). Color doesn't alienate the color blind becasue THEY CAN STILL SEE THE PICTURE (thus nothing needs to be done, I mean, have you ever heard a color blind person complain about color movies? NO! Becasue there's no reason to!)! These things are so wildly different that you should feel ashamed for bringing up an argument that is so ridiculously stupid.

3D alieanates the color blind and the perceptive impaired becasue they flat out CAN'T SEE THE PICTURE. This makes it so you can't even see the movie... therefore nothing they could do could help this issue... thus the only way to NOT completely alienate this subdivision of the populace would be to continue 2D filmmaking. Add to this the fact that a great number of consumers who CAN see 3D don't like it, don't care either way about it, or even flat out HATE it (like me), then it should be pretty plain to see that there is NO CHANCE IN HELL that 3D will ever even come close to becoming the standard. To think otherwise is moronic, and you'd only be fooling yourself.

Posts are posts, if you're bored of any of them you should either ignore them (not making any comments on them whatsoever becasue doing so without reading the whole posts make you look stupid) or read them anyway just for the sake of the discussion (like I do with yours half the time).

Simply put Booster Gold should be a member of if not the leader of The Linear Men. The entire concept of that group was one of DC's biggest missed opportunities in their publishing history.

A book of their own showing them maintaining the DCU's history preventing it from being changed, much as boosters book has been doing, would have been a large seller I think. Because not only did it allow readers the chance's to revisit iconic moments of their favorite heroes it would allow DC the chance to have expanded on their own established historical cannon. By showing the Linear Men doing their job on a monthly basis it would become a book that could have actually been a pivot point for the DCU.

When a creative team wanted to retcon something they could have actually had the change justified by having that change incorporated into the Linear Men books as a mission failure causing the change in history they needed. It's a obvious tool that I am surprised no one at DC realized they had.

Darth_Andrea
The biggest problem with this idea is that the Linear Men would've undoubtedly gone after Geoff Johns to stop him from altering the past... either that or you'd have a few dozen issues filled with failed missions, lol.

Your correct, infact they have even sent out screeners uncompleted. Remember the Wolverine film? I get why they do so, but what I don't like is they put so much stock in what the test cards say, yet you are showing someone an incomplete product. There is no way you can get an accurate reaction.

3D is not a fad, it is a technological advancement in the way we watch movies. There will always be a market for it as well as 2D versions of the movies. Pick your pleasure but no need to get Pissy at the fact that it exists. I love 3D, I have a passive 3D set at home and I think ot truly adds to the immersion of a movie. Having seen the GL trailer (3) in 3D proved to me that this film will be even better in 3D ( personal opinion) and I can't wait for it to be released onto 3D BD. I can understand anyone's opinion that its not for them but the utter disdain you show for the tech is borderline obsessive. Enjoy the movie in 2D and I'll enjoy it in 3D.

Talking

History Of The Corps.
Quote:
Billions of years ago, a race of immortals harnessed the most powerful force in existence - the emerald energy of willpower.
These immortals the Guardians of the Universe built a world from where they could watch over all of existence - the planet Oa.
A ring powered by the energy of will was sent to every sector of the universe to select a recuit, in order to be chosen by the ring it was said one must be without fear.
Together these recuits formed the intergalactic peace keepers known as - the Green Lantern Corps.
"We Are The Corps, We Are The Corps!"
The gravest threat the Corps ever faced was Parallax an entity that feed on the yellow power of fear.
After defeating the Corps finest warrior a search for a successor began.
"Choose well"
And for the first time the ring chose a human.
"Become one of us."
"In brighestday, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might, beware my power Green Lantern's light."

And you should feel ashamed that you decided to spend all day railing against something without doing a shred of research, critical thinking, or displaying the slightest amount of tact or good humor. I know, you had a headache. You think it got better or worse from staring and a computer screen all day getting more and more angry? "Douche" is being generous.

Okay, now I forgive you because you apologized.

Its totally a fad. A basic understanding of the history of cinema would show you that.

3D came and went in the 50s. It came and went in the 80s and it will come and go again in the current decade. And as far as I'm I'm concerned it can't go quick enough. I loathe it. I will be seeking out Green Lantern 2D screenings only.

Definitely a fad, just like color, Cinemascope, and high-definition.

Only to help the movie, I plan on seeing the movie three times now;

Midnight premiere in 2D if available, once in 3D and then once in IMAX 3D.

Guess that headache isn't getting much better is it?

The point (which I REALLY shouldnt have to spell out for you) is that if there's some strange series of events that cause future movie viewing to be exclusively 3D (where the extra $3 would just be what movies cost) then there would be a way, like subtitles for the deaf, to make the movie viewable in 2D. (But seriously, they don't put subtitles movie screens, so that would only work at home, and there would still be a way to watch TV in 2D - those glasses free 3D sets say as much.)

But there's a much more reasonable present day use for them that the "dumb guy" who invented them even states on the site - so his wife can join him at a 3D movie and not have to see it in 3D. If you're going to the movies with a bunch of friends who insist on 3D, you can forgo the 3D while still sharing the moviegoing experience with them.

But I don't even think 3D will ever be the ONLY way movies are shown. I only joined in this argument because you're being so belligerent and willfully ignorant about the whole thing. I'm not sure why you bothered to apologize to everyone if you're just going to keep doing it. I also enjoyed you better when you were being funny, and even went so far as to thank you for joining and lightening the mood around here. Now I've kinda written you off, as I'm sure some other people here have decided to do today. Talk about "alienating a subsection of the audience"! Good show!

I dont know about exclusively, but I kinda ran into this problem when I went to see Thor at Midnight. Me and my friends got to the theater and found it was only being shown in 3D at the time, so we all antied up for the tickets. It was my first 3D showing and I found it kinda weird at first. A little dizzying too. I enjoyed it, but I could see how someone would have possibly brought those 2D glasses for such an occasion.
