Uh, lots?

Actually, "Gwangi" started out as an abandoned Willis O'Brien project that Harryhausen resurrected, and even though Ray wanted to change certain scenes, he tried to keep a lot of Obie's original ideas in it.

Oddly enough, my 9 year old son (step-son really) made his "real" dad take him to Barnes & Nobles this weekend so he could get this for my birthday, although I don't think he has any desire whatsoever to actually see it because, probably, the cover scares him.

I was extremely pleasantly surprised.

Didn't realize the 7 Golden Vampires had a DVD release. Huh.

I'm almost 100% sure that compilation disc is available at Target as well. I could have sworn I've seen it in passing.

I'm jealous. Our Target sucks!

Saw this on Youtube last night.

JOOOOOOHHHNNNN AAAAAAAGGAAARRRR.....

Although much darker in the print they have up, most stills really do look a lot like Ben Grimm in his old overcoat and wide brimmed hat get-up. And since this "film" came out in early 1962, I'm sure they were already at least in preproduction when the first FF comic was released. Chickens and eggs.

I'm really surprised the RiffTrax guys haven't gone after this one.

The Return of Count Yorga (1971)

I know this is technically 70s but it's more appropriate for this thread than the modern one.

At any rate, this was okay. It had pretty good atmosphere and pre-famous Craig T. Nelson!

The sequel makes no real reference to the first.

It was as if they decided to do an immediate reboot.

You are right, it was an odd 'bridge' film from 50/60s to what would follow in the 70s. I think they were trying to do an american take on what Hammer and Amicus had been up to in England.

^Exactly that. It is very Hammeresque.
It's a bit more violent than 60s era Hammer, but not by much.
Otherwise, the most "modern" thing about it is that Yorga is very sarcastic, which was pretty funny actually. The line that comes to mind is when he enters a costume ball and a lady tells him he forgot his fangs. He replies "you forgot your manners." He also mocks a boy's piano skills. Fun stuff.

King Kong (1976)

"You Goddamn chauvinist pig ape!"

So, since this was about to expire and I hadn't seen this since I was a kid (even then I'm not sure I saw it all), I decided to see it again. I had avoided it because I thought it so much worse than the original.

I still do, but I guess it wasn't that bad. It's funnier. I love when Jessica Lange tries to reason with then threaten Kong. The giant snake sucks and it's a shame they skipped the T-Rex. Ending it at WTC made sense for the day (though I'm not sure the logic fits since the rocks they resemble weren't something KK climbed). Kong himself is okay.

The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)

"Goldsmith: One of a set.
Trout: A set? You mean there's more than one of them?
Goldsmith: Of course there's more than one of them, that's why it's a set."

So, this is one I've wanted to see for a while but it wasn't on Netflix. Fortunately, someone (from my church, of all places) lent it to me.

It's not my favorite Vincent Price, but it's so bizarre (and campy) that you can't not have fun. It's funny that they named his sidekick Vulvania, which is just a Romanized vulva.

Some funny deaths, thought it's just weird that they changed the order of the 10 plagues and the actual plague in two places (rats for pestilence, okay; but bats for lice?).

Black Sunday (1960)

"You, too, can feel the joy and happiness of hating."

One of four Mario Bava movies expiring Monday. A vampire witch burned two centuries prior seeks to return through the descendants of her persecutor. Not bad. I could swear that some of the voices (it's dubbed from the Italian) were the same as in Speed Racer.

^Ha.

BTW: In the spirit of Abin Surly, today is the anniversary of Edward D. Wood Jr.'s birthday (would've been 89). I'd like to mark it, but I watched all of my Wood stuff (including Ed Wood and the MST3K episodes) within the last two month as I was on a kick. Ah well, maybe I'll watch Plan 9 from Outer Space for the 100th or whatever time. Anyway, happy birthday to that angora-wearing, Lugosi-employing "auteur."

Bay of Blood (1971)

"You agreed to the Krout girl!"

Another Bava movie. Feels like a lot of early 70s slasher movies. The surprising part was that some of the formula for Friday 13th is here: partiers on a resort lake get picked off. There's even a couple in bed who get speared together!

And, finished Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972)

"If ever a man deserved to die it's you."

Probably at the same level as #1 (they're only a year apart). The comedic elements are still here and the deaths are still very elaborate.

His nemesis this time is played by the same guy who played Count Yorga.

Kill, Baby, Kill (1966)

Not bad. Maybe this is too on-the-nose, but this Bava flick felt like a cross between a Hammer horror and a Dario Argento movie. Centers around a town (being investigated by an outside doctor) haunted by a ghost girl who portends people's strange deaths.

And another Bava (and hence Italian) horror movie, but this one is an anthology (and was not expiring):

Black Sabbath (1964) [aka The Three Faces of Evil]

"What's the matter, woman?! Can't I fondle my own grandson?"

The quote, btw, is in regards to the character just hugging his grandson, but the mother is rightfully suspicious that he's a vampire. That's the third/final story (based on a Tolstoy novella). The others are ghost stories, though apparently the one ("Telephone") had been recut. The original, Italian version was a revenge story and had a lesbian subplot.

Boris Karlof narrates a frame intro and plays the quoted vampire.

So, what struck me this time around was (1) they spend a lot of time giving his back story/origin, which is kind of refreshing for Hammer; (2) it's really cool that they picked an obscure but established (I read a lot about this stuff) reason for becoming a werewolf---being born on Christmas.

(3) I feel extra sorry for this werewolf because it seems so preventable. They actually know his cure and he still doesn't make it!
