It's still the New52 version of Orion and Highfather visually, so I'm not entirely sure. It's super confusing since Orion is back to his classic self in the Mister Miracle series... Unless that series is outside of regular continuity...

I'm not particularly knocking Geoff here. He just did what everybody else does. But he's a pertinent example, in that he spent 10 years making very gradual changes in Green Lantern.

Now if he really wanted to see those changes, and he really thought they were needed, then why didn't he make them fast -- say, in six months? The answer is that he, like so many other writers, made his run about the changes he was making, instead of about the stories he was telling!

That's why the comic sucks now. It's nothing like the way it was when he took it over, and his changes have been harmful. Yes, they helped him tell stories, and they got people excited for a while, but they hurt the comic.

If you don't want to make your changes fast, then I call bullshit on you. If they're really needed, then you need to make them right now, and not drag them out for years as grist for your stories.

You have to consider how far Johns planned ahead, and how much of his plans stuck. When he first started Green Lantern, he may not have even thought about all those different colored Corps and everything that came with them. It actually seemed like he wasn't headed in that direction at all. I see fans often wonder why that Cowgirl character and that air force base setting fell to the wayside. Well, the likely reason is that plans for the story took another direction. DC saw success with the Sinestro Corps War arc, so they likely said "we want more of that," so the story headed that way, with colored corps wars. If I had to guess, I would say that wasn't the original plan, though.

It may not have been his original intention to change things. Actually, it seemed like he was more interested in setting things back to how they were, or something much closer to that. But the winds and apparently what customers wanted to see took the story someplace else, and the rest is history.

Well, I'd guess that when I started prophesying the War of Light, he had a good notion of where he was going, but I'd agree that he probably didn't have seven corps, Blackest Night, and Brightest Day planned when he was building Sinestro Corps War.

I don't think Geoff planned Baz and Cruz from the beginning. But I think he knew all along he was going to introduce the emotional spectrum and get rid of the Guardians. I think he also planned Cowgirl and the Air Force base from the start, but dumped them because of the bad reader reaction they got, compared to the good reaction the space stories got.

I agree about the Guardians at least. He was hinting at their motives for quite a while before he made them outright evil and set up their departure.

Yeah when he took it over and Rebirth was being teased, the last few issues of the clusterfuck ending of Marz Homecoming? arc to end the Kyle era were still doing better than what we're getting now. Despite how bad editorial made that ending turn out it STILL sold better.

51 Green Lantern 179 $2.25 DC 35,564
56 Green Lantern 180 $2.25 DC 36,426
49 Green Lantern 181 $2.25 DC 41,528

Making Hal and Kyle the stars of Green Lanterns makes complete sense. Shifting focus on the GLC title and only focusing on two human Lanterns at a time rather than four would also help develop them further, and it could be any pairing if they wanna keep Baz and Cruz. I wouldn't mind seeing Cruz and Guy team up after her experience training under Guy.

Back on the issue #27 topic... I can't wait to see more New Gods/GLC. Lightray has always been my favorite NG character so I hope we don't just see him for like two pages next issue and that's it. I'd love to see EVS take on the new design of Orion's as well.

Geoff's first issue of Green Lantern was published in 2005. Blackest Night was published in 2009, but DC was already promoting it in 2007.
