Yep. Yep. I'm only given certain titles one issue to hook me, but I'm giving this three.

Of all the things in Animal Man, this page bugged me. He's a more public superhero/animal rights activist/actor and people know him, but he felt the need to pull off a mask that didn't even hide his face? If he still wore goggles [and he did, it said so in the opening interview page] it might make sense, but he doesn't!

I broke down and got the issue today, loved it. I just hope A-Man keeps the costume and doesn't run around bare chested and bloody the whole series. I see he picks his jacket back up next issue....

It's a hostage situation, with a desperate and bereaved man who's not thinking straight and probably as scared as his hostages (albeit for very different reasons).
Buddy is just trying to keep the guy from becoming further agitated - when you talk (or listen ) to a person, you tend to look at their face, while he had the mask on, Buddy's face was basically a superhero's face on that says "I'm here to take down the bad guy", by removing it he's making the statement "I'm not being a hero now, I'm not here to take the bad guy down, I'm just another ordinary guy in the room."

Yeah. Of all the books I've read so far, this has the strongest opening issue. It briefly covers Buddy's biography and powers, introduces his family and has a quick, but gripping, introduction to the first story arc.

Earlier in this thread (or maybe it was the main DCnU discussion) someone suggested that there might be room here for the Blood/Red to be an antagonist for the Green (i.e. ol' Swampy)...
Me, I'm just intrigued by what is effectively a concept 'Meat' elemental, just like Swamp Thing/ The Green is representative of all the plants, The Red is the same for the Animals.
I'd expect the Rot/Sickness/Hunters Three to be akin to Black Lantern Swamp Thing (although I desperately hope something not directly Black Lantern).

Anyone else draw parallels to BL/BD Aquaman at the end of this issue? I'm actually quite glad the universe has rebooted, because now we can't blame/use Black Lanterns as causing this.

I understand what they were trying to do, I just think the scene could've been handled better. Maybe it had to do with Buddy originally having a Flash type of mask that covered his hair that still incorporated goggles.

Yeah that was me who thought of the Red vs the Green.

I thought about the BL Aquaman too, I wonder what this means for A-Man's daughter? I hope we still get to see him face a villain or two in his costume, I thought it was funny his son mentioned the Justice League and sending in an audition tape.

Am I the only one that thinks Animal Man and Swamp Thing could fit in a League, maybe the JLDark? Hell even the regular JL could us a power set like theirs....

Based on the quality of Swamp Thing and Animal Man, I'd say DCU Dark was the big winner amongst the relaunch comics this week. Already this little corner of the DCU is making itself stand out from the crowd. Should be interesting to see if the trend continues.
