I've got three kids, ages 7, 6, and 14. James, Isaac, and Andrew.

James recently brought home a worksheet from school where the kids were supposed to, I think, imagine the perfect sibling for themselves (the instructions were odd, in that they seemed to assume the kid filling the sheet out had no siblings).

He instead decided to write it about Andrew. At first I was like, "Awwww, that's so cute, he looks up to his big brother and thinks of him as the perfect sibling, despite any difficulties they may have." He misspelled Andrew's name in a cute way,and had a cute, smiling picture he drew of him.

The sheet asked him to describe this sibling's "likes", and so he put "Playing music", since Andrew plays the trumpet and the piano, and is in jazz band at the High School. So far, so good, right? Feel good, cute school assignment.

Next question is this sibling's "dislikes". So what does James put? "Isaac and James" (Isaac is his other brother).

    Oops.

Next question, "What kind of things would you do with your sibling?"

    Answer, "I would do nothing."

Well that took a wrong turn real fast....

I'm not really concerned, but I do wonder what the teacher is thinking...
meh i wouldnt worry. he is a kid afterall. besides its not like he said kill my brother wich then would be a red flag

    • Yeah, I'm not concerned because I'm there day to day and know this isn't a sign of some serious problem. I just thought the teacher might be raising an eyebrow.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm back. I didn't go anywhere really, but I don't spend much time on the internet when I'm at home. Connection at work is SOOO much faster.

Sounds like just an age thing that James will realize when he gets to 14. He doesn't understand that Andrew is at a different level now with puberty, girls, and figuring out what that thing between his legs is. . Plus, it's "uncool" to hang with the youngins, even though there will always be a strong bond between the three of them. Not having any little Dooms myself, I can't say for sure that I'm right, but I think it's just a sign of kids growing up.

          • I hope they maintain a strong bond. I'm pretty confident that Isaac and James will, but Andrew, in addition to being quite a bit older, also has Aspergers, so his social skills are not the greatest, and he doesn't really naturally consider other people's feelings, which makes for some rocky interactions with younger siblings that can, admittedly, be annoying at times.

            • Holy crap. I just looked up Aspergers, having no idea what it is. Question: do the two young guys understand his condition? Like, I put myself in their place, and I'm not sure if I would understand, being 6 or 7. Does Aspergers require medication?

I think there are medications that you can use, but we don't. His is on the mild end. We haven't specifically discussed his diagnosis with the younger kids, though we do try to explain in age appropriate ways that when Andrew hurts their feelings, or ignores them, he isn't necessarily doing so deliberately. Some mediation is definitely required, but a lot of times Andrew just kind of goes off my himself. Their interactions are at their best when the others are showing interest in a subject that Andrew is very interested in/knowledgeable about. Which is kind of typical of Aspergers.

Well, at least we know one thing: Andrew has a good dad looking after him. I'm sure he will be well, as will you.

To answer that question, you would have to look at every post I've made in the H&P thread. I'm sure I joined in some of the more "read between the lines" jokes that were going on, but more or less, I pointed out truths to him that he didn't want to accept. Sometimes, the truth can be painful when things don't go the way we want.

But I will say this: I was never near the level of crudeness and outright sickness/vulgarity that the thread has devolved into. I have my limits, and even when expressing my personal opinion, there are some lines that shouldn't be crossed.

On the YT thing, when you click on the YT button and paste the link in between the code, you have to remove the "s" from the "https" of the link. Little trick Lord Noms taught me long ago. It needs to look like this:

                        "

                          Wohey.
I see, that thread has gone for too long now.
Maybe it's time to end it.

The moral of this story is, don't make a big production of your marriage proposal unless you are SURE of the answer ahead of time. My marriage proposal was a whole day affair of events, but when I actually popped the question a.) we were alone, and b.) a I KNEW for a fact what the answer would be ahead of time.
