  • Why is music so much worse today?

I think it's because there'a a lot of condescension in it. The people who make music today are thinking, "How can I use tried and true methods to push the audience's buttons?"

Back in the day, performers were sincere about what they were doing. They were making the music that they loved. They weren't calculating about how to manipulate some segment of the market.

Cause you're old Smasher. I'm getting to point where I don't understand much of what's out there either. Crappy music has been around for a good long while now. I'm sure you remember disco.

Music sucks because the people getting into it are doing it just for the success that comes with it, and not the goal of making classics.

        That's right, West.

And Johnny, yes, there's always been bad music around. But the question is, where is the good music now?

agreed that and almost all songs sound the same either the music beats or the words

It's out there, just not as popular. Much like how a lot of rock and roll back in the 60's and 70's was buried.

Who matches up with the Beatles now?

                Or even with the Who?

                Or even with the Eagles?

Why is there nothing comparable to Motown now?

                        Madonna, U2, Bruce Springsteen....

as for Motown... you don't think theres an army of pop musicians playing someone else's commercially crafted music?

You don't think Britney Spears actually writes her own stuff do you? There's an army of studio musicians and composers pumping out pop hits and ballads just like there was in the heyday of Mowtown and Elvis.

As music and culture gets more and more "fractured" thanks to the availability of media and media distribution there will be fewer and fewer groups, shows and other art that becomes cultural touchstones the way something like The Beatles were.

Music is fine. It will always be fine.

                        Quit being such a pessimist.

Tell me now. In their heyday, all those people were recognized as great.

Madonna, U2 and Springsteen are all over 50, if not over 60. And Madonna sucks too. So does Britney.

They weren't recognized as great the way they are today.

They were pop sensations. Nobody thought Madonna was a cultural icon in 1985. She was just Lady Gaga. Nobody thought U2 or Bono would be as big as they are today in 1988.

You have to give legends a chance to grow. You can't just take a snapshot of 2010 and say "There's nobody under 30 who is considered a master at their craft therefor music today sucks".
