The very beautiful Margaret Blye, who has died at 73, appears in this episode of Gunsmoke. Michael J Pollard is a standout.

Some of you haven't seen this. Paul Savage put on a writing clinic here.

Someone on Wikipedia noticed that in composing the theme for Robinson Crusoe on Mars in 1964, Nathan Van Cleave used the same five-note motif he had used the previous year throughout The Quest for Asa Janin. It starts at 0:45.

Some of you haven't seen this either. It's another writing clinic, this one put on by John Meston.

Another episode some of you have not seen. It offers another master class in writing, this one put on by Kathleen Hite. And an acting clinic as well, conducted by the great Dennis Weaver.

More brilliant writing by Kathleen Hite, and a showcase for Milburn Stone. Guest star Ben Cooper also shines.
(BTW, guest star Robert Sorrells, who will turn 87 next month, is serving a life sentence for murdering a man and attempting to murder another in a bar when Sorrells was 74. He walked into the bar, said, "Does anybody else want to fuck with the cowboy?" and started randomly shooting people.)

Guest starring John Saxon, Morgan Woodward and Ed Asner. This isn't the washed-out print that TV Land shows, but a super-sharp rip from a recently remastered and released DVD. It also contains the 7 minutes that TV Land cuts out of all the Gunsmoke episodes so it can cram in more commercials.

This is the pilot episode. People who were watching that night knew right away that this was something different. The star's girlfriend was a prostitute, and he lost a gunfight!
In its last 10 seasons, under different producers and writers, the show became much more middle-of-the-road. But in its first 10 seasons it was a real departure, even by today's standards.

For anyone who has never seen it. This is a powerful and moving episode, maybe the best one that John Meston ever wrote.

One of the greatest episodes in television history. Teleplay by Sam Peckinpah and story by John Meston. That's Aaron Spelling playing Weed.
