horrible franchise to begin with imo

SAW Scribes Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton to Pen New HALLOWEEN Film

It’s probably time to stop messing with perfection when it comes to John Carpenter‘s Halloween. While some of the sequels hold up (I found Halloween H20 to be surprisingly enjoyable upon a recent revisit), and we do owe the god-awful Halloween: The Curse of Michael Meyers a debt of gratitude for introducing Paul Rudd to the world, the most recent attempts at rebooting, remaking, reimagining, and re-anything-ing the franchise have fell flat. Halloween: Resurrection, the last of the actual sequels, was a catastrophe (if sometimes inadvertently entertaining), and Rob Zombie‘s remakes completely failed to capture the magic of Michael Meyers, offering a story that was almost identical, but felt entirely unfamiliar.

halloween-scout-taylor-comptonThat said, if we’re getting more Halloween, I’m willing to give it a chance with Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton behind the script. I’m not crazy about any of the Saw films after Saw II, but their work on The Collector and The Collection is wildly underrated. Both movies are entertaining with a strong voice and well executed horror set-pieces, and The Collector in particular has a very low-key vibe that I could see meshing well with the Halloween IP.

THR reports that sources claim Dunstan and Melton’s version of the film won’t be a reboot, remake, or re-imagining, but a “recalibration”. I don’t know what that means, and frankly it’s kind of an irksome thing to say, but hopefully it just means they’re addressing the fact that the tone of Rob Zombie’s films did not work at all.

The new Halloween film has been in development at Dimension films for quite some time, with Patrick Lussier (My Bloody Valentine) and Todd Farmer attached to a “Halloween 3D” at one point. There’s no director on board for this version of the script as of yet, but given the strength of his work on the Collector films, I’d like to see Dunstan get a shot.

What do you guys think? Will we finally get another terrifying night in Haddonfield or are we headed toward another blah murder fest?
