Well no. But it's not as obvious as to how to bring back Batman as I thought it would be. I thought he'd just get blasted with the Omega Beams and vanish without a trace... which would pretty obviously lead to a later story where Darkseid could just shoot another Omega Beam and suddenly Batman rematerializes, as we know that Darkseid has done (well, not to Batman, but others) in the past with his Omega Beams.

With Batman leaving behind a burned out husk of a body... it's more troublesome.

So do you think Batman's apparent death here is in some part a response to Marvel killing off Captain America? Or do you think this was planned before anybody knew about that?

I think it's very foolish to believe Grant Morrison does anything because of what Marvel -- or anyone -- happens to be doing at the moment.

JEEEEEEEEEEEEZUS!!!!!!!!!!!! The "Final Fate" was slightly predictable, but that last fucking page was sickening. My eyes watered. Its sitting here next to me and its just wrong(in a slightly good way).

Spoilers aka Extensive Recap: Highlight To Read

Superman is talking with Brainiac 5, mostly about what Supes has been doing and where B5 is leading him. He leads him to the "God Weapon" that can completely alter reality with a single thought(think a giant Power Ring Machine with no ring). Only problem is that Superman is fading away, apparently headed back to the present. B5 tells Superman to just LOOK at the machine before he leaves...

We then cut to the JLA Watchtower, with Black Canary,The Ray, Tattoo Man,Joan Garrick, & Linda West and her twins. BC inducts Tattoo Man into the JLA as an honorary member. Nice little continuity bit with Linda West finding a sting-gun from Korll(which a JLA/Titans member probably got when Wally kicked Queen Bee's ass last month in Flash #247.) Just as tings seem fine, the tower is being boarded by Justifiers and their many ships.

Then we head back to Bludhaven were Mary Marvel(aka Desaad) is beating Supergirl through buildings galore. Many heroes including Vixen, Hourman, and Wildcat are still on the front lines while Supergirl regains the advantage over Mary by slamming a bus down upon her. Of course Mary rises through it(this scene like others in this issue would have been amazing if JG Jones had his shit together), and their battle continues. The beaten down Black Adam confirms what we already knew, that Desaad was indeed the one inside of Mary. And as he grabs onto her foot(like a bitch), she slams her heel into his throat. Supergirl comes fighting back...again, but this time Freddie Shazam thinks he has a plan to finish her off.

We get a great set of panels of Kalibak versus Tawny where Tawny straight up monologues Kalibak into a nice tiger bite! Then gets beaten down for it...Supergirl has Mary pinned down and seems to be on the edge of wanting to kill her, until a bunch of ravage Anti-Life infected citizens start hurling rocks at her, screaming "I AM DARKSEID" and using all of his magic, Freddy(ie?) comes zooming out of nowhere Dragonball Z style, tackling Mary and screaming "SHAZAM" to try and transform them both back. We see in a panel that Tawny is bleeding profusely, and thought to be dead. Kalibak is watching the possible transformation, saying "Have no fear! Darkseid owns the Lightning"...hoping that it wouldn't work. And while he's distracted..TAWNY SLASHES HIS FUCKING GUTS OUT! Saying simply.."I beg to differ." Awesome.

Kalibak dies, and the rest of the Tiger people bow to Tawny. The smoke clears from the lightning and Freddy...has done it! Mary is wholesome and pretty and full of hair again! She says she can never say the word again, which makes me think about Desaad. I'm sure he can over power her at some point and force her to say it, right? Anyway, Wildcat, Red Arrow and the Hourman couple(can't remember his wife's name atm) stand over the beaten Darkseid Resistance.

At the castle/Checkmate tower?/Great Wall, we see Shilo Norman explaining to "White King",lol, Mr. Perfect that the symbol painted on the faces of the Super Young Team and himself is a symbol or a letter from the alphabet of the New Gods. Its a living symbol that means 'Freedom from restriction" and somehow it protects against the Anti-Life. Mr. Perfect says that there are "No more than 3 Billion FREE humans alive on the planet"....Which of course, I find to be pretty fucked up...though in retrospect, all you need is two people to make a world.

Mr. Perfect initiates "Black Gambit" status, which is most likely his safeguard of about a million O.M.A.Cs, that he "freed" in Final Crisis:Resist that saw Snapper Carr get busy with Cheetah(and that's probably what it'll be remembered for). We get a beautiful panel of the Furies attacking Bludhaven. I had forgot that Giagantica(sp) was one of them. Her presence really makes this half two page spread look amazing. We get to see that the Super Young Team really are pathetic, with their leader,SuperBat claiming "I have the greatest power of all...I am so rich I can do anything." lol One of the SYT claims that Doomsday(not the character) is coming in ten minutes tops.

Back at the Watchtower, we see that these Justifiers must have been following Black Canary and the gang since they left the Hall because both Green Arrow and Black Lightning are now "one with Darkseid". BC pleads with Ollie to snap out of it, and Tattoo Man tries to remind Black Lightning that he's a hero...Doesn't work. BL places the Anti-Life helmet on Tattoo Man and he flips out! Black Canary professes her love for Ollie, and he replies with "Love is Pain, Anti-Life is the anesthetic. Submit." Great writing there.

Poor grammar by Tattoo Man, as he fights off the ALE, screaming "You Let Her Alone, You hear?!" Then the New God alphabet/symbol appears upon his face and he's able to stop the ALE from taking over. Canary proceeds to kick the shit out of Ollie, knocking his helmet off, all while commanding the station to turn the gravity off. Everyone is floating around including the seemingly useless superpowered kids of Wally. Well, Jai does punch someone, but Iris is just floating..lol BC continues to beat the crap out of Ollie, trying to either beat the ALE out of him or talk him out of it. But she's beating him so badly that I don't see how he could tell her that he's back anyway! lol

The RETURN OF RAY PALMER! He AND Ryan Choi are working with the Checkmate organization, they are preparing to "Ride the graviton superhighway to another universe." Ray introduces himself and Ryan to The Question aka Renee Montoya(still receiving her tour of the Checkmate org..taking their sweet time.) Ryan claims that ALSO being called "The Atom" is embarrassing, and he needs a new name. We'll see that happen soon as someone at DC cares to write you Ryan. Q, still receiving her tour of the place, is shown that they have a mass amount of ALE infected people(including Miss Martian) being "treated" by psychics. Also, Zatanna and a bunch "mystics" attempt to contact The Spectre in the afterworlds. Kind of a spoiler to Revelations but whatever. Q passes by another room, that features some girl on a operation table, ready to be sliced open it seems. I can't recall who that is though...Looks like "Overgirl" or something like that.

Again we get the mention of "Black Gambit" by a Checkmate official, and this time its referred to as The Omega Offensive. Anyway, Q is introduced to "Lord Eve"(a Giant orange/yellow ball). Renee is sick of the friendly tour, and lets them know that its "Over for the home team." Lord Eve claims that Renee is to lead the Global Peace Agency that will establish the remnants of this world on another. It also says that the "ride" that the Atoms are taking, is a mission to find a parallel universe. Which holds another Earth that Checkmate plans to retreat to...with whoever they choose I presume. We then see 4 faceless men in leather jackets rise from below. Renee is confused and the world is still in danger as they have this convo.

Doctor Sivana and Lex Luthor watch Calculator literally hang for dear life. Libra has set it up so he'll be dangling forever. Apparently Calculator has been at this a while, and professing his innocence of betrayal since we last saw him. Dr. Sivana has used the "medival" designs(cheap shot, lol) of Mad Hatter's Justifier helmets, to allow him to convert his watch into a short range signal jammer. Lex has been allowed to power up his suit in preparation for today's battle. Libra is approaching them from behind, and the two men are seemingly waiting to spring a trap for him. Libra, as we already knew, knows that Lex is the one who betrayed the rest of the villains. Sivana activates the jammer, apparently hurting the Justifiers and Libra is caught off guard by their pain...allowing Luthor to monologue and then destroy Libra with a giant blast. Great panel, but a truly anti-climatic death for the character that had so much potential. Sivana says that its a classic "We haven't heard the last of him" moment, and it definitely feels that way. Luthor lets Calculator down, and the cloth of Libra burns.

Jay Garrick has arrived in Keystone City, specifically speaking Iris Allen's apartment. Barry Allen speaks a bunch of scientific mumbo jumbo(actually he just claims that Space,Time,Light, all becomes one thing, beyond a certain point and is eventually matter turns into pure information. And he sent back from beyond that point, knowing all this.) He then says that he knows what he has to be done to stop Darkseid. And he puts Jay in charge of protecting Iris. (FYI: Jay got there by following Barry's trail. Claiming he'd been all around the country looking for Linda,Joan and the twins).

Barry says that if he can't do it, then Wally will have to. And in a chilling moment(for me at least), Barry says that the Black Racer won't give up chasing him(we were right again!) and stern faced Wally(probably because he thought his family was safe last time he checked) says "I met this guy when he was Black Flash...I outran him." Then Barry's bitch ass tries to take away from Wally's skill, and says "I bet you did." What a HATER! lol The Black Racer is headed their way in the same Boom Tube-like portal that we saw Barry arrive in. Barry says that Darkseid is sitting at the center of a personal singularity and its Beyond the reach of light...(Thank God, Wally got his full speed back last month or he might not make it that far!) The two of them speed of in a great panel of electricity....

The Final Fate of the Batman...Darkseid is looking terrible. He looks like a cracking rock. He knows that Batman is "skulking in the shadows" and tells Batman to embrace the Anti-Life and be whole. Batman takes a shot at Darkseid saying "You look like I feel." He also says that Darkseid shouldn't have shot Orion, and of course Darkseid claims that it was destiny that Orion was to fall in "Final Battle." Batman, with all his fighting skills is no match for Darkseid of course, and with the end of the world on the line...Batman breaks his solemn vow, and whips out a gun capable of firing the very same bullet that shot Orion. Batman says its "Radion", a toxic(in the DCU). Darkseid says that Batman won't be able to escape the "Omega Sanction", and Batman simply says "Try Me." He FIRES THE GUN into the chest of Darkseid just as he releases his Omega beams and Darkseid falls! A smoking hole in his chest, and Batman says "Gotcha"....but unfortunately, the Omega beams are still active and are headed to each side of his head. The next page is a two page spread of the Omega beams just hitting Batman, and is VERY well done to say the least.

Black Gambit has been initiated. Hawkman and Hawkgirl talk about how they can't be together in this lifetime. Kyle Rayner and the rest of the Green Lanterns are STILL falling towards Earth. Kyle says that they never seem to get closer to Earth, no matter how far down they go. Guy says that they have to keep trying, even if they die trying. That they "Will not abandon our people to that!" Their rings tell them that their power is at 19%....

Some servant of Metron(hell, it may even by Nix but I can't tell) says that he can't coordinate something, and that its all happening at once. That he was exilled in the darkness with this "germ-people" for a reason.....Supergirl says it too quiet, and you shit goes down when its too quiet....Metron says, while sitting in his mighty chair,

"Nix Uotan. Observe. You're Arrival inaugurates the Fifth World. The age of Men As Gods. These New Humans face a greater menace than Darkseid if they breach the Bleed Wall."

Alan Scott(at the castle) looks into his ring....then starts to collapse with only a pillar and Blue Beetle to hold him up. Apparently someone(Darkseid) has "Poisoned the root. He's broken the world.".....We then see the good Dr. Light trying to help the wounded from outside of the castle. Apparently when the Furies attacked, Wonder Woman started spreading diseases! lol People are losing their powers and dying(which would have been a great time to show Aquaman dying for continuity purposes)....

Black Gambit is now "in play". The disease carrying Wonder Woman says "Look up in the sky...." As does Supergirl....The only thing we see in the sky is a giant dark red cloud...but it seems to be pulling up, like its being sucked up.....

BOOM! Superman comes flying down to Earth with ZERO regard for any human life, firing his laser beam at everything in his path. Furies fly, and Wonder Woman is knocked off her giant dog, as Superman comes flying in full of rage leaving a trail of destruction and fire behind him. He stops for a second and aims his beams onto the ground. We see a shot of Supergirl over looking the city, and a red bubble is taking over the city. People are scared shitless! What seems like the other Earths are being hurled into the red bubble, that now have electricity flowing everywhere.....

The final page shows Superman holding Batmans still smoking but burned to bones corpse in his hands. Its so sickening that Batman looks like a mere child in his hands and his eyes of course are gone and the only thing left on his head is bits of flesh and teeth....

Great issue. Best issue yet, imo. If you didn't enjoy this issue, you know nothing! There I said it. 100/10. Easily. Not the best way to get rid of Batman, but I can't think of ANY good way. Can't wait to see what Darkseid,Superman and The Flashes do next.

Its so sickening that Batman looks like a mere child in his hands and his eyes of course are gone and the only thing left on his head is bits of flesh and teeth....uke

Great issue. Best issue yet, imo. If you didn't enjoy this issue, you know nothing! There I said it. 100/10. Easily. Not the best way to get rid of Batman, but I can't think of ANY good way. Can't wait to see what Darkseid,Superman and The Flashes do next.

basically laid out the whole book, but ignore what I said. was it because you liked it and I thought it sucked?

Eye pieces? Those aren't eye pieces. He usually has slits for his eyepieces, but what you see there are two holes where eye balls used to be. Your eye "area" would expand as well if your eyes had just been blasted with a beam of death.

Like Andrew said, Grant Morrison writes to tell the best story, not to one up Marvel or counter Marvel.

And THAT IS BRUCE WAYNE! Whenever he does return, hopefully it won't be Blackest Night, he will would be returning from death. This is not a clone, and this is not anyone else but Bruce Wayne. If the writer who is lucky enough to write his return DOES make it out to be someone else, or a clone or something stupid like that...then I'll give you guys 50 bucks each because my money is better going to you than on stupid ideas like that.

lol. You can hate whatever book/series you want. This isn't the DCMB! lol I reread the entire series including tie-ins over the past two days, and this book, imo, is LIGHTYEARS ahead of Infinite Crisis and doesn't include ANY of the terribly dated dialogue that Crisis On Infinite Earths had. For me, as of right now, it ranks like this:

                          1. COIE
                          2. Final Crisis
                          3. Infinite Crisis

And that can change with the last issue of FC, it could very well be the perfect ending that a story of this magnitude needs to have, and top my list. Or it could fall like Darkseid....but I doubt that.

My bad, I guess. The picture I saw (which admittedly wasn't the best quality), made the eye areas look convex, like there were goggle lenses over them. Looking at it again, I can see where they might be interpreted as being holes. I assume when I am holding the actual book in my hands, as you are, that the artwork will be clearer...

And yet there were those rumors that he was being made to adjust things, and there were all those delays that gave those rumors some plausibility. And as far as I can recall, the only denial those rumors got was to say that the ENDING of Final Crisis is what Grant always planned it to be. We aren't at the end quite yet...

                              I guess I'm a bit too cynical.

Ya but now that this issue of Final Crisis came out I'm thinking that the art is the main reason they pushed it back followed by making sure all the other Final Crisis tie ins came out at the right time. Because right now that seems to have helped the stories flow a lot better.
