Weird News
Seemed like we could use a thread for those bizarre or funny news stories a few of us post that don't seem to fit anywhere else and which probably don't deserve individual threads. So, here it is.

And to get the bat ball rolling...

Holy smokes! "Batman" nabs suspect for British police

LONDON (Reuters) - A mystery man dressed as Batman demonstrated the same crime-fighting skills as the caped crusader when he handed over a suspect wanted for burglary in Britain.
Closed-circuit television footage showed a portly figure wearing an ill-fitting costume including gloves, cape and mask, bringing a 27-year-old man to a police station in Bradford in northern England.
The suspect was arrested and charged with handling stolen goods and fraud-related offences, said the force. But the costumed crime-fighter disappeared into the night without leaving his name.
"The person who brought the wanted man into the station was dressed in a full Batman outfit," said a spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police. "His identity, however, remains unknown."
The suspect was handed over in the early hours of February 25, said police who released photos of the footage on Monday.

Man accused of stealing $19,000 worth of Girl Scout Cookies

We know Girl Scout Cookies are a guilty pleasure, but are they worth committing a crime for?
Christopher Maurice Morton was charged with stealing $19,000 worth of Girl Scout Cookies from a South Carolina warehouse, the Associated Press reports.
The cookies were first reported missing by the owner of Carey Moving and Storage – who reported that 450 cases of Thin Mints and Shortbread were missing after an inventory was conducted on February 26.
Morton, a driver for the business, has since been fired, according to Master Deputy Kevin Bobo, and charged with "breach of trust more than $10,000."
What was the plan? A cookie heist? A Thin Mints bender? Unclear, since Bobo notes that Greenville’s Deputy Sheriff recovered some 352 cases of cookies from behind an abandoned business.
The cookies seem to be too tempting for some: Thieves recently swiped cash boxes from two Girl Scout troops selling the sweet treats in Tucson.

A few short bits from the wires:

Israeli kids hurt by teachers' name-calling
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Students at an Israeli high school were in an uproar on Monday after a teacher mistakenly sent them an internal email that spelled out what faculty members really thought about them. "Not too bright", "Liar", "Tactless", "Big Baby", "Anti-social", "Has a thing for boys" and "Sick-o" were some of the descriptions on an Excel spreadsheet that landed in students' email boxes.

Norway teacher fired after children taste her blood

OSLO (Reuters) - A Norwegian kindergarten teacher was fired this week after she brought a vial of her own blood to class and allowed children to touch and taste it, the head teacher of the kindergarten said on Friday. The teacher in Sola, on Norway's western coast, brought in a blood sample that was taken earlier in the day and poured it on a plate for the children, aged between 3 and 6, to see.

New York mother arraigned for hiring strippers for teen's party
(Reuters) - An upstate New York woman pleaded not guilty on Thursday to five counts of child endangerment after other parents complained that she hired female strippers for her son's 16th birthday party. Judy Viger, 33, of Gansevoort, New York, denied the charges of endangering the welfare of a child at her arraignment in the Town of Moreau Court, according to a court spokesperson. If convicted, she would face up to one year in jail.

Man dressed as Cookie Monster arrested in NY

NEW YORK (AP) — A man dressed as the Cookie Monster has been accused of shoving a 2-year-old in New York's Times Square and has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Queens resident Osvaldo Quiroz-Lopez was arrested Sunday afternoon. He was arraigned Monday on charges including aggressive begging. He didn't enter a plea.
A Connecticut family posed for a photo with the man dressed as the "Sesame Street" character. Police say he demanded $2 but the family refused to pay. A criminal complaint says the man shoved the toddler and yelled obscenities at the family.
Quiroz-Lopez has no prior arrests. His lawyer hasn't returned a message seeking comment.
In December, a performer dressed as a Super Mario Brother was accused of groping a woman in Times Square. His case is pending.

Kindergarten Boy Suspended for His 'Distracting' Mohawk

Mister Ed 04-09-2013 07:25 PM

That's an odd one. I mean, knowing some kindergartners, I can definitely see something like that being pretty disruptive (doesn't take much to distract kindergartners), and so I can see, if that was a problem, asking the parents to do something different with his hair. But a suspension seems a little too much of a drastic (and formal) "punishment" for running afoul of an extremely vague and ill-defined school rule against "disruptive or distracting" hairstyles.

Sylent_Asassin 04-09-2013 09:27 PM

I don't know why any parent would even want their child to have such a distracting, rebellious hair style. I'm not condoning or justifying the suspension, but that looks like poor judgment exercised by the parents.

Mali to give France new camel after first one is eaten

BAMAKO/PARIS (Reuters) - Malian authorities will give French President Francois Hollande another camel after the one they gave him in thanks for helping repel Islamist rebels was killed and eaten by the family he left it with in Timbuktu, an official in Mali said.
A local government official in northern Mali said on Tuesday a replacement would be sent to France.
"As soon as we heard of this, we quickly replaced it with a bigger and better-looking camel," said the official, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
"The new camel will be sent to Paris. We are ashamed of what happened to the camel. It was a present that did not deserve this fate."
Hollande was presented with the camel when he visited Mali in February several weeks after dispatching French troops to the former colony to help combat al Qaeda-linked fighters moving south from a base in the north of the country.
The president joked at the time about using the camel to get around traffic-jammed Paris. But he chose in the end to leave it with a family in the town on the edge of the Sahara desert.
Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian was tasked with giving Hollande regular updates on the camel's status and had to inform him of its death last week, French media said.
"The news came in from soldiers on the ground," said a French government official.
French leaders have received many gifts of exotic or wild animals from Africa and further afield over the years.
Last week, a robber chainsawed a tusk off the skeleton of an elephant offered to Louis XIV by a Portuguese king in 1668. Police caught the robber as he fled, tusk under his arm.
-This whole story is gold, but I love that little side note that the Defense Minister was actually given the job of updating the president on the status of the camel. Day 29: "Monsieur President, your camel is fine." Day 30: "Monsieur President, your camel has been eaten." "Sacre bleu!"
