Wonder Woman by JMS
Wonder Woman #601 PREVIEW
Writer: JMS Artist: Don Kramer http://comicsmedia.ign.com/comics/im...7043223320.jpg http://comicsmedia.ign.com/comics/im...7043228632.jpg First issue released out today. -------------------------------------------- I didn't hate this. There wasn't much to the story that we didn't already read in an interview. I thought Don was really good with some scenes but sketchy on others. I was surprised at just how bad his classic Wonder Woman looked. The coloring by Alex Sinclair was a bit inconsistent as well, but the story didn't bore me and I'll be back for the next issue. The costume is still stupid, but I didn't find myself cursing at it every page. I also noticed that even with this ridiculous costume, Don Kramer still had a bunch of ass and breast shots. lol |
No thread for this already? Oh, well.
To paraphrase Alan Moore: "I'll be spitting venom all over this." |
I agree with West, nothing fantastic, but I want to know mor

I enjoyed the issue. I think if anything, JMS is showing us this new alternate world isn't status quo. And while I definitely don't like the outfit, I think it's going to be a lot less permanent than people are making it out to be.
|
I'm not impressed with it.
|
I picked up the issue yesterday, but I haven't had time to sit down and read it yet because of ComicCon hangover and catching up with my projects at work.
|
Its amazing how much this discussion between 5 people summed up my feelings on this issue. lol
|
I must admit, it is a good discussion.
|
I read the issue and I liked it. It's a recon (sp) without really be a recon(sp). I like the scene where Themyscira is attacked and the Amazons lead by Queen Hippolyta fight back to the bitter end.
I'm not liking the new costume, but I am liking the new attitude of Diana, a hint of anger and a dash of vengeance; good ingridents for a more gritty Wonder Woman. |

I don't the face work on either covers, as they don't flatter Wonder Woman. Both make her look kind of butch. However, I like the story thus far and I'm planning on pick up the next issue.

But that goes against the comic book marketing ploy.

I'd rather be fishing, In the long run we all will still be laughing at the costume and still foreseeing another Zero Hour event!!

Wonder Woman #602 PREVIEW
Writer: JMS Artist: Don Kramer http://i.newsarama.com/images/ww_cv602_ds.jpg |
If you read Wonder Woman #600, I think there are subtle hints that those who are behind Wonder Woman's past changing are 'god related'. Which is why I also believe this is nothing permanent.
We'll see though. I thought WW #602 was an entertaining issue, and showed a sense of desperation among the Amazons. I like the character of Diana, and showing a more exposed, youthful personality. And brash. |
I enjoyed it as well, but I don't see anything "youthful" about her personality. Its the same Wonder Woman we've had since the 80s.
I thought the art was a bit rough in certain areas, and I find it ridiculous that they changed her costume and yet Don Kramer draws her with the biggest breasts she's ever had. There's a lot of talking in this issue that bored me, but I would put it under a "necessary evil" category. Some writers can make the informational parts of a story work, and some can't. In this issue, JMS failed to do that, and I became bored. Still, I like that she isn't alone, and I like that little story of Aphrodite and the temple. It was a weak explanation but still interesting. Unfortunately, a complaint from the first issue rolls over into this one...what makes me care about this villain? Apparently he has set out to kill the Amazons...why? If it weren't for prior reading, I wouldn't have an emotional attachment with the now dead Amazons. I need some villain development and quickly...This isn't a mystery thats making me ask "Who is it?! I can't wait to find out." but rather a "Why mass kill the Amazons in this random world?" Hopefully the Amazons will continue to travel, so JMS can flesh out this silly little timeline of his and hopefully some more of them will die, making it more interesting when its 3 Amazons against 1 bad guy...and another dies, and the other one really hurt and WW saves the day. Damn, I ruined the story for myself...:( |
Nothing amazing, this issue was okay. I'm willing to bet the the people behind messing with Diana's personality is either Zeus or Ares

Plus, the main point of the story is her saving these Amazonians and her coming into her own as Wonder Woman. I do agree, we need to find out the villain. Like I stated, I believe it will be highly wrapped in mythology. If there's one thing I've noticed about the times I've read JMS's take on WW, he is really into the mythological side of her. |

And for the covers.. they sucks. Nobody can top master Adam Hughes! |
Also....what the fuck is up with her bracelets? Is that fucking blood? What's wrong with her forearms??????

And without those bracelets to protect her, yeah... she can get hurt and bleed. I don't think any of those bullets actually went in, but they broke the skin at least. That's why you always generally see Wonder Woman (traditional Wonder Woman) blocking bullets that are being fired at her with her bracelets rather than just standing there letting them bounce off her body -- because if she could just do that, why not just do that all the time? Think, like, Aquaman in that recent Brightest Day where bullets bounce off him but he still gets bloody a little bit. |
Sigh... I can't wait until this "Revamp" is over and done.

Having read #600-602 by now...
I like...
I don't like...
All in all, I like the storyline so far. But JMS definitely needs to make the new status quo cooler. By the time he restores the old continuity, people should be missing the new one. Otherwise... what's the point? |
How can you like the urban part when all we've seen is her fight in an alley?
And the point is to show Diana in a new way while still adding to her huge background. You won't find out what this does to the DCU, at least not this year. That's not something he considered, and you should have probably realized that through all those interviews and statements. This isn't about the DCU. Just like with Superman. Its not about what's going on with other characters. This WW story is supposed to be a look at her in a different setting and still reading/watching all the best parts about Diana shine through. Its not going to be here forever and while we may want to find out what these 2 years in this alternate timeline does to the DCU timeline, its essentially irrelevant. Treat it as the year lost during One Year Later. Its a timeframe in Wonder Woman's career as a superhero that just doesn't get explained...Maybe someday JMS or some other writer will bother to do so, but its not going to help you enjoy a story worrying about something the writer flat out stated he wasn't going to do. |
