Within the past year, we’ve seen Wonder Woman’s profile taken to new heights. Not long ago, we saw how Marc Andreyko helped give birth to Wonder Woman ’77, in which Lynda Carter’s portrayal of the Amazon was brought to DC Comics. Plus, in theaters these past few months, we’ve seen how actress Gal Gadot catapulted Wonder Woman into theaters with the release of Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Now we’re seeing the Scary Godmother indie queen herself, Jill Thompson, taking a crack at revealing Princess Diana in a whole new light that will appeal to a wide range of readers.

With the debut of Wonder Woman: The True Amazon HC (MAY160281), we have an original graphic novel that reimagines the early years of Princess Diana. Those of you who remember the Elseworlds books are in for a real treat. This book which is fully-painted by Thompson shows a side of the Princess we never thought we’d see: she’s grown spoiled. Yes. Fame, it seems, has gone straight to her head. Revealed to the world as a champion of justice, all the media attention seems to have had an effect on the Amazon, to the point where she may be on the verge of becoming a borderline diva.

What do you expect when suddenly everyone wants to take your picture?

But as fate would have it, the bright lights/big city attention which makes you feel like you’re ready for a Bentley doesn’t last for long (it seldom does). Tragedy strikes, and with this punch to the gut, Wonder Woman gets grounded again.

Reality has a habit of settling in when you least expect it. Our young heroine has to learn how to grow up, take the hits, and accept her place in the world, whether she likes it or not.

To see the new and exciting direction Jill Thompson lays out for Princess Diana that hits comic shops this July, check out the Wonder Woman: The True Amazon HC (MAY160281) from DC Comics in the May issue of the PREVIEWS catalog!

I read that headline and expected a horrible BleedingCool story about how DC was screwing over Greg Rucka already.

Wonder Woman is looking like it might be a winner. I'll keep that subscription.

Eh, I disagree, they're both definitely cheesecake artists but Finch's proportions definitely tend to get wonkier.

No way it'll happen this soon, they gave in too much to not even get some sort of ROI.

Wonder Woman smiling?! GASP!

Cool.

I read like the first two digital issues of Legend of Wonder Woman and lost interest because it was another origin story.

I haven't read that many WW origins. The funny thing is that it actually has a lot of overlap with Bombshells. But I've found the series very fun. My only complaint is that its a bit overly wordy. I don't mind a good dialogue-heavy book, but there's unnecessary verbiage here.

I want that Frank Cho variant cover.

I just read Wonder Woman #52 this morning and what an uninspiring ending. I'm glad it's over.

Sigh, I had to read this thread before I read the comic, my stupidity. It seems practically all the DC new 52 ended with a yawn, not just Batman (though that was the most excruciatingly boring of all).

Read Rebirth. Another yawn. Does the refund include shipping?

Meredith Finch never should have been given this title. It'll go down as worse than that terrible JMS run before New 52

KilowogsDisciple 05-25-2016 06:38 PM

I keep checking out the upcoming WW Rebirth plans and art and reaffirmed what's coming up is worth subscribing to. It looks terrific imo.

I still can't believe that happened, like I understand Finch is a big name artist but he's not that big of a name.

Darth_Primus 05-25-2016 07:36 PM

I don't recall ever hearing the name Meredith Finch before she was given Wonder Woman. Her husband hasn't been doing great work on since he's been with DC. We was on on Batman for awhile and his work on Forever Evil was pretty bad.
