  • From Hal Jordan to ...Terry Berg?

What would happen if Terry Berg were created back in 1994 and not only
replaced Hal Jordan as the Green Lantern (on account of Ganthet giving
the ring to Terry instead of giving it to Kyle Rayner), but also became
the star of the third Green Lantern series?

How many GL fans would accept Terry Berg as the latest and only
Green Lantern remaining in the 90's?

Would GL Berg be respected to the DCU and Green Lantern fanbase
after he's placed on Grant Morrison's JLA comic run to make him an
interesting character back then in the 90's?

How would DCU fans feel towards Terry Berg after Hal Jordan returns?

And of course, would the third GL series comic sales rise up, down or
or somewhere in between once the comic title comes out?

Note: Terry Berg is an eighteen year old homosexual intern in
this scenario, but he's still an art assistant for Kyle Rayner who
would just be a supporting character for Berg (among others).

This is a really interesting question. And to be honest, I have no idea. If all other factors (Marz as a writer, Banks as artist and costume designer, Hal calls himself Parallax and is trying to right wrongs on a cosmic scale now) were identical, one would assume that it still would have worked. Sure, we still would have had H.E.A.T., but if the only differences were the name, hair color and Green Lantern dating Obsidian instead of Jade, I see no reason why he wouldn't still be around.

However, if DC hit us over the head with Terry's sexuality with the subtlety of the Judd Winick run, there's a high chance that he would be an unimportant footnote now, like Extraño from the New Guardians.

Yeah, but they would've been the Homophobic Emerald Attack Team.

Well actually after Kyle was "killed" by Liana(sp female guardian the friggin HUGE blue chick), the ring went to Terry. This was resolved in one line during the first issue of Marz's finale run Homecoming. So yeah Terry was intended to get the ring. But back to having a gay GL, it would depend on how he is written. Obsidian is gay not a big deal and Northstar/Beast/Batwoman are gay and its written as a big deal. Even Wolverine's son Dakken(sp) is bisexual and even the writer makes it seem like a big deal and that can make a character kinda one dimensional, dull, and just lead into him dieing in the next big company crossover.

Let's not forget Wiccan & Hulkling. They are gay but not a huge deal made about it or the focal point of them
I LOVE conspiracy theorists. They are like human versions of the cymbal clapping, dancing monkeys. No one takes them all that seriously and they get bored with them after about 10 minutes.

              Beast is not gay, though.

Beast only mentioned that he "might be gay" during Grant Morrison's New X-Men run. That run was godawful, so make of Beast's comment what you will.

That was one of my favorite runs on X-men. Not th art though. That was not so much with good.

Yeah, the art was very incosistent, but the storylines were great. And Beast said "I think I might be gay" to break up with his girlfriend. He admitted in a later issue by the same writer that it was just an excuse to make it easier for her.

Many comics creators are gay. I think for a while there was a push to bring more and more openly gay characters into comics, but that trend seems to have faded now. Probably because it didn't generate sales.

How many gay comic creators can you think of? Mark Andreyko, Allan Heinberg, Phil Jimenez and Alison Bechdel are the only ones I can think of from the top of my head.

I know of two creators who have been associated with GL in recent years who are gay. But it's up them to talk about it, not me. They're not "out" with it publicly.

And I'm sure there are many others in comics who are gay but not public about it.
