  • Reading Order for Volume 2

So I am working my way through all of the Green Lantern Volumes. I've gone backwards a bit; I read all of volume 4 then all of volume 3. So I'm about to start through volume 2 but I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. This is as best as I can figure reading order wise. I mostly have it arranged by publication dates listed on the covers of the books.

    Green Lantern 1 - 75
    GL/GA 76 - 89
    Flash 217 - 243
    GL/GA 90 - 122
    Green Lantern 123 - 139
    Tales of the GLC 1 - 3
    Green Lantern 140 - 183
Tales of the GLC Annual 1
    Green Lantern 184 - 187

    (Next 3 happen concurrently)
    Crisis Infinite 1 - 12
Tales of the GLC Annual 2
    Green Lantern 188 - 200

    GLC 201 - 219
Tales of the GLC Annual 3

(Next 2 happen concurrently, I have a Millennium reading order but I'm not concerned with the other tie-ins unless they specifically affect Green Lantern)
    Millennium 1 - 8
    GLC 220 - 221

    GLC 222 - 224
    Green Lantern Special 1 - 2
    New Guardians 1 - 12
    Action Comics 601 - 642
    Cosmic Odyssey

Anyhow, if there are any big events that are important, any reading orders that run counter-intuitive to the publication dates, anything I already have listed that are just awful, etc. Anything like that would be a great help. Thanks so much.

Just reading them myself and am at issue 183, revising a list as I go. Here is my current reading order. I do not know if it is accurate yet. I've incorporated elements of your list, Meltdown. Finding a pre-crisis reading order has been challenging. I'm pretty sure that TGLCA#1 comes after 185 though, not 183, because it references 185 in the opening pages.

    VOLUME 2

    Green Lantern #1-139
Tales of the Green Lantern Corps #1-3
    Green Lantern #140-185
Tales of the Green Lantern Corps Annual #1
    Green Lantern #186-187
    Crisis on Infinite Earths
Tales of the Green Lantern Corps Annual #2
    Green Lantern #188-200
    Green Lantern Corps #201-206
    Legends #1
    Green Lantern Corps #207
    Legends #2-6
    Green Lantern Corps #208-211
    Action Comics #589
    Green Lantern Corps #212-216
    Justice League America #1>
    Green Lantern Corps #217-219
Tales of the Green Lantern Corps Annual #3
    Millenium #1-8
    Green Lantern Corps #220-224
    Actions Comics #601-625
    Green Lantern Special #1-2
    Cosmic Odyssey #1-4

    ONWARDS TO VOL 3:

Green Lantern Emerald Dawn I #1-6
Green Lantern Emerald Dawn II #1-6

Would these Emerald Dawn series by considered Vol3? Seems they are like the "Rebirth" of Vol 3.

I consider Emerald Dawn pretty much as standalone. It's referenced in vol. 3 but chronologically it doesn't fit between vol 2 and 3 except if you want to consider them as reboots.

According to this list, the Emerald Dawns come before issue #201:

I haven't read them yet tho.

Just read #188 and, what do you know, "Mogo Doesn't Socialize"! I initially bought all these backissues to read these "Tales of the Corps" shorts but am really impressed by the regular series too. I really liked this tale, and having seen the Animated Movie already, was pleasantly surprised to see how some of the dialog made it through.

Seems "Tales of the Green Lantern Corps Annual #2" is out of place, but will find out where it goes as I read on...

They put it there on the list because Emerald Dawn was a retelling on Jordans origin (and his time in prison on OA) the first time after CoIE. However I would still disagree on putting it there because you'd mix 80's style and 90's style of storytelling.
It'd be the same thing as reading showcase #22, Emerald Dawn and Secret Origin all in one session just because it's GLs origin story.

Emerald Dawn has always been the lead in to GL volume 3. Volume 3 The Road Back also has some referals back to ED, you should definitely just read it before heading into volume 3, not earlier.
Also keep in mind to read Ganthet's Tale before volume 3 #32.

Ok, I've finished reading almost all of these. I bought the wrong Blue Beetle 22 (2006) but I don't see what the 1986 one has to do with GL, from the description anyways. And I'm not sure why I have it in my list.

Cosmic Odyssey is definitely must-read for John Stewart plotline.

But Green Lantern Special #1 is confusing. The very first pages allude to Katma Tui's death. Looks like I missed Action Comics Weekly #601-602. Doh!

The Flash backup stories actually go to issue 246

Time to resurrect an old thread. I recently ordered the 2 updated GL silver age omnibi and they showed up in the mail today. So I have been pulling the collections out of my comic room that reprint volume 2 in the fewest number of books. Right now this is how it stands if someone wants to compile a run of vol 2 while cracking the fewest books:

Green Lantern The Silver Age Omnibus vol 1 and 2 (reprints Showcase 22-24, and GL 1-75).

Green Lantern/Green Arrow slipcase hardcover (covers 76-89)

GL Showcase vol 5 (black and white reprints all of the Flash backups during the hiatus)

                  GL/GA Space Travelling Heroes hardcover (July 15th 2020, reprints GL/GA 90-106

GL/GA and GL 107-171 as yet not reprinted)

Tales of the GLC vol 1-3
                  GL: Sector 2814 vol 1-3
Reprints the Tales of the GLC 3 part mini, all 3 annuals the GLC backup strips, and 172-206.

GLC:Beware Their Power vol 1 hardcover
                  Reprints GLC 207-215

GLC 216-224 as yet not reprinted.

So those 12 hardcovers and softcovers get everything reprinted so far, leaving a 65 issue stretch, and the final 9 issues to be collected. With reading in this time are CoIE which has been collected numerous ways, and Millenium, which has been collected once in softcover.

I gotta get that omni. All the original issues I'm missing in vol. 2 are in the first 40. That would be a good way to make sure I've read everything at least.

I'd need to get Omnibus 2 to fill the last gap in my collection, but $93 is a bit rich for me, especially since a.) it overlaps my Archives by 22 issues, meaning I'm paying that much for only 18 issues, and b.) my recollection is that the issues in my gap aren't exactly highlights of GL's history, so I'm reluctant to pay over $5 a pop for them.

                      I know, I'm cheap.

Well, honestly, I just added it to my wish list on Amazon; so, I guess I'm cheap too. But I only have the 1st archive to Golden Age, so my only overlap would be the issues I physically own, which are mostly pretty crumby reader copies.

The first omnibus ends at GL 35, so that would cover most of your gap SC.

Yeah if you are trying to avoid double dipping, there aren't many options for you. That's one gripe I have with DC, that they suckered me in so many times rebuying issues I already had, in the Hope's that ONE of these formats would pay off. And of course DC got me.in the end anyway, after a few years of me playing hard to get. I must own at least 6 versions of a lot of these silver age GL issues.

I wish DC would commit to a vehicle to get all of Volume 2. I've read similar sentiments toward many older titles, and there is a definite market for something like this. Image reproduced their first year of Walking Dead comics with Walking Dead Weekly, and those found an enthusiastic audience. If DC decided to do cheap reprints as a way of reacquainting fans with old runs, they might be pleasantly surprised at the results.
