I actually bought the first hardcover the other day. So far its good, but I'm like two issues in.

I'm guessing that when you say Emperor Doom, you are talking about the story where Victor is on Earth 2 and conquers the planet then decides to come back to Earth 1? Because I have that in trade form which is just simply called "Doom" by Dixon. Other than that, I would HIGHLY recommend the following:
